The Least Amount of Money Ever Spent on a Gatcha Game
Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2018So this is only the second game I own on the Switch, since I pretty much only play RPGs and 2017 was a slim year for (big name) RPGs. I've never played a Xenoblade game before, and went in ready to compare it to Breath of the Wild, since I had gone and done the salvager armor quest to get Rex's gear for Link. Well, that was totally the wrong mindset for this game, but I am still enjoying it immensely.
The plot is both super, super linear (totally opposite of BotW), but at the same time very open world, with tons and tons of side quests and content and places to visit and explore apart from the main quest. It's a bit overwhelming at times, to be honest.
Not a huge fan of the Blade system. I didn't really expect to buy a console game and end up playing a gatcha game, but I do understand how it works with the story. It gets super repetitive and annoying, though. I also wish the Blades themselves came with more backstory. I play Fire Emblem Heroes, and at least with that gatcha, when you summon someone, you know their history and backstory. Like, what is the Blade's backstory? I get that some are quest locked, but it's annoying to me not to know what I'm summoning when I summon some super-cool looking Blade. Like, for instance, Perceval. He's a demonic, mechanical samurai? Maybe? From where? How? Do these questions ever get answered? It kinda bothers me. Blade design is all over the place, and backstory is sooooo slow coming. Maybe if I'd played the previous titles I wouldn't be so confused by the random designs? IDK
Overall, would recommend for fans of RPGs, especially JRPGs.

Most fun I've had playing a JRPG since the '90s
Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2019This game isn't for everyone, but it was 100% up my particular alley. My favorite RPGs of all time are Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy IX, and everything I've played since then has offered diminishing returns on that spark. This was the first game I played since then (so technically since 2000?) that genuinely gave me that same feeling of wonder and whimsy and epic adventure that those games did.
There are flaws: Some confusing and difficult to navigate areas and quests (just look up a walkthrough online if you get stuck), convoluted mechanics for leveling and an initially overwhelming and sprawling battle system. The other flaw is some bonkers fan-service-y character design in places (namely some of the blades you acquire in your party). But some of those things grow on you (the battle system is a blast once you figure it out), and the others are easy to overlook because of all the fun you're having exploring the vast world and story. In fact, some you can mostly ignore - some of the crafting and leveling mechanics, for instance, you don't have to get really deep into if you don't want to. You can still complete the story with minimal focus on those, but if you like them you can dig deeper. And if you hate a particular blade's character design, just don't equip it and equip one you like better.
I put over 95 hours into this game before I beat the main story, and only got more and more enjoyment out of it as it went on. The story keeps twisting and topping and one-upping itself, evolving right up to the last chapter when it reaches its genuinely surprising and spectacular conclusion. Even after completing the main story, I have tons of quests to go back to and finish up, as well as the expansion pass that you can get if you like.
And none of this is even mentioning the music, which is incredible. Yasunori Mitsuda (of Chrono Trigger) and a handful of other composers go all out with a bombastic, over-the-top score that's just awe inspiring. I can't say enough good things about the music. Again, since Chrono Trigger and FFIX I haven't heard game music that hit me so hard and resonated so deeply with me as this soundtrack has.
This is one of my favorite games of all time now, right up there with Chrono Trigger and FFIX. I get why some people don't like it, but this game is perfect for me.

[Spoiler Free] A JRPG That's Both An Instant Classic And Remarkably Innovative
Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2018Far and away my favorite game on the Switch so far, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a deep and expansive RPG with an innovative combat and character system. While in many ways seeming like a step back graphically for the Xenoblade franchise (using deformed and cartoonish block graphics instead of the cleaner and more "realistic" art style from Xenoblade Chronicles X), XBC2 is an exciting and comfortably familiar game that takes many of its inspirations from the best RPGs of the last two decades while introducing new hooks to keep it fresh and new.
The big innovation of XBC2 is the introduction of Blades. Blades are artificial lifeforms that serve as both weapons and party members, allowing you to blend the experience of a massive multi-character story with the more intimate story progression of a small group. While the core cast of characters is never more than 4 main characters at a time, these main characters can have up to 3 Blades each equipped, with each Blade having a unique combination of social, exploration, and combat abilities. Many of these Blades are generic and randomly generated collections of abilities, but the game also features over 30 unique Blades with original art done by anime, manga, and video game artists, as well as their own subplots and special abilities. Each character can have 1 of these Blades active on screen with them at a time, enabling special "heart to heart" cutscenes that add to the story and unlock new special abilities for the Blades.
The story itself is timeless, which means that it has an excellent combination of familiar elements but presents these classic formulas with a unique energy and exciting new hooks. If you're a fan of JRPGs you'll feel like you've played this game before in all the best ways, but with the excitement of new vistas and a modern combat system that uses a combination of free movement and timed actions similar to the recently re-released Final Fantasy 12.
While this may not be the best fit for someone who isn't a big fan of the fantasy RPG genre, fans of games like Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 12, Dark Cloud, and other such entries will enjoy this entry in the Xenoblade franchise.

Somewhere tucked away in this grand package there is a truly perfect game
Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2017I sunk about 140 hours into this game already, maybe it's because I'm a sucker for pain, maybe it's because I'm a completionist, I don't know but Xenoblade Chronicles 2 somehow finds a way to make simple tasks take 100% more time to complete. I'll be brief and outline the good and the bad below..
The Good
1) Environment - Sweet mother of mercy the environment here is beautiful. When you look out at the world of Alrest and see the abundance of wildlife and the surrounding ambiance you can't help but be in aw. It's grand!
2) Combos and combat - Combat is initially slow paced, just imagine you're playing an MMO and you are at your lower levels and only have one or two abilities. With that taken into account you'll be waiting for your auto attacks to connect so you can use your other abilities. That being said once everything comes into place battle can be a fun exercise of building elemental combos and executing over the top chain attacks.
3) Music - The music is stellar and changes depending on the time of day, it's is for the most part the most flawless aspect of this game.
The Bad
1) The Combat - Like mentioned above you're going to spend a fair portion of the beginning part of this game waiting for your auto attacks to build, taking this into account early on in the game I felt bored waiting for everything to connect. I also find in combat the mobility of your character is greatly reduced, you can't jump so if you're stuck in a potentially bad spot you risk getting knocked off and having to fight the environment resulting in some fairly frustrating deaths. Fortunately they are very forgiving with the respawns.
2) The Character Design - .....I had my Weeaboo phase. I like Anime I really do, but one of the things I like least about Anime is when your female protagonist is "proportioned" in a manner that just doesn't.. make.. sense... Maybe Weeaboo me would go gaga over the blades but 35 year old me just eye rolled super hard at some of the characters. The fan service is strong here... that includes the jiggle mechanics. Just... come on......
3) Dialog and Story - ..........Again.. I'm sure younger weeaboo me would go nutbars over the story but I just cringed. The story is so so it gets pretty cookie cutter. There's a lot of phrases that are along the lines of "WE'LL WIN WITH THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP" that had me chuckling.
4) Resolution downsampling in handheld - So the switch in order to prioritize frame rate will lower the resolution on particularly complex scenes so that you have good game play. This happens mostly in towns for me but it sometimes gets in the way of my experience. I ended up playing this game docked as it's less obvious I do that.
5) Sidequests - FETCH BOY! FETCH! GOOD BOY! HERE'S SOME XP... BUT WAIT... HERE'S ANOTHER STICK FETCH BOY! GOOD BOY!
The verdict
I'm, believe it or not, not finished with this game! I'm still on Chapter 8 with 2 more chapters left but my 140 hour runthrough has been a mix of enjoyment and endless frustration. Would I recommend it for the full sticker price? Depends.. if you like JRPGs or anime sure, I can see this being right up your alley. If not? Welllll you might want to skip this one.

From The Person That Never Play Xenoblade Before!
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017Just bought it today the game is pretty and beautiful I know some of you guys talking about so much pixel in the game graphic and not like in the trailer but man come on this system can handle the graphic like this is still super good already remember it a handheld system remember that! I doubt that they gonna release patch fix to improve more soon, the game just one day old give it a try don't hate it too much.
OK, the main review now: From the point of the person never play Xenoblade game and this is my first Xenoblade that I ever play!
- About the graphic: right now look good not so bad hope they gonna improve more in the future 7/10
- About gameplay: It is very satisfied if you catch and carefully " read the instruction " about the control of the game 8/10
- About character design: anime art style and I liked it look fresh and beautiful (+ 1 point)
- About the story: I'm not into the game for too long and not finish the game yet but kinda interesting in the story right now so I'm not gonna give it any point yet and for me the story so far so good right now!
- About the detail of the game: it HUGE and it OPEN WORLD, its have variety of blades that you need to collect and combine to create your own team that works for you there is one thing I notice I got some rare blade and some common blade but some of the common blades are still doing a pretty good job!
+ Sum up I give this game 7.5/10 worth to pick it up right now maybe when I'm finished the game my point gonna change but for now I love it!

Initial impressions.
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2017Unlike XENOBLADE CHRONICLES X, Monolith Soft's follow-up to their now classic XENOBLADE CHRONICLES goes back to the basics, this time by providing a staggering world made of Titans. Graphically, the game is gorgeous -- the Anime aesthetic may be a bit off-putting to some, but frankly, I actually like this style and find it to be cleaner and less muddy. On the audio side of things, the music is on the same level as the original XENOBLADE, if not better, mostly with CHRONO TRIGGER veteran Yasunori Mitsuda at the helm.
As of this writing I have not received the game, but I do want to comment on some things regarding the voice acting. This is always going to be a subjective thing, and no one is going to unanimously agree on everything. It's best to decide for yourself. Personally, I think it's great that Nintendo offers both the English and Japanese options. That way there's something for everyone. As for what I've heard of the voice acting so far, it's good for the most part, although not as memorable as the original or even XBCX. Like the first game, this was dubbed in the UK, and it's refreshing to have the characters with different accents. It provides a nice multicultural touch to the atmosphere. The only weaknesses are that the lipsync is sloppy and while Al Weaver does a mostly solid job as Rex, his action scenes need work. Adam Howden was far more expressive at those moments, while he tends to hold back a bit too much. When he's in normal scenes, though, he's great. Nia's surprisingly Scottish-accented may be off-putting for some and her initial scenes, too, are iffy, but she gradually gets better. Everyone else sounds fine, though, with the real show stealer being Zeke -- his voice actor puts in a lot of hamminess and charisma and makes the dub worthwhile to me. Although it falls somewhat short compared to its predecessors, at least this is not BATEN KAITOS I or ARC RISE FANTASIA quality, so I'm good with it.
I'll update this review when I play the game, but as for the voice acting: try it both ways and see.

Thought it'd be just okay at first, but damn is it fun.
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2017This is a hard one to know if you'd like it or not. It starts out pretty slow, and while the music and world design is amazing, at points you wonder if it's worth going on with. Combat is lackluster at first, everything kills you when you're alone, and the dialogue of certain enemies is repeated.
But that all changes a few hours in when you have a full party with different blades and a grasp on the combat system. The combat system, once opened up, is fantastic and a ton of fun. Setting up combos for flashy, overpowered moves is satisfying. Even choosing whether to keep hitting and flicking the joystick to raise your arts meter or letting the combo play out is an important and fun part of it all.
The music is incredible, as can be expected since Japanese developers tend to focus a lot on the compositions featured in their works. The world is gorgeous and really vast while being varied. The characters are a delight, despite what your opinion may first be when looking at the character designs.
If you're buying this for your child/nephew/niece, I'd be wary if they've played and e joy games that are like this, mainly JRPGS or MMO type games as the combat can be pretty complicated at first glance and the enjoyment of gameplay is a big factor that depends on past experiences.
All in all, this is a really great game only if you are open to a kinda MMO style of gameplay and give it a little time while everything falls into place, because when it does, it's an incredible game that I didn't think I'd be that into at first.
