Entry to the Brett Whiteley Studio is free. Some special events may require a ticket or advance booking. Check the website before you visit.

Yes, photography is welcome in most areas. Some artworks or spaces may have restrictions. Please follow any signage you see throughout the gallery.

Yes! We love seeing visitors sketch. Please use pencil only – no pens, markers or paints.

No, we don’t offer a cloakroom or bag storage, so we recommend travelling light.

Yes, prams are welcome inside the Brett Whiteley Studio. Please note, there is no dedicated pram parking on site.

No. Outside food and drinks aren’t permitted in the Brett Whiteley Studio.

Light rail

The nearest stop is Surry Hills, about a 5-minute walk away. From Devonshire Street, turn left into Esther Street (before Bourke Street). Follow the street as it bends right, then turn left into Raper Street.

Bus

From Central Railway Station, take the 372 or 393 from the Eddy Avenue bus stop. From the city, take the 301, 302 or 303 from stand D at Circular Quay or from Castlereagh Street between King and Goulburn Streets.

Parking

Parking in the surrounding streets can be difficult. Out of consideration for local residents, please avoid parking in Raper Street, Davies Street or Esther Lane.

The Brett Whiteley Studio is arranged over two levels and offers a unique opportunity to experience the environment in which Brett Whiteley lived and worked. The building has been upgraded while retaining its historic character, and many of the Studio’s original features remain.

• Visitors enter and exit the Brett Whiteley Studio through the same entrance on 2 Raper Street, Surry Hills, NSW 2010.

• The footpath at the entrance is narrow and uneven. There is a step 100mm at the entry door to the Brett Whiteley Studio.

• During the interim period, wheelchair users can access the studio via a portable ramp. If possible, please contact us via email brettwhiteleystudio@ag.nsw.gov.au or phone 02 9225 1881 before your visit so we can ensure the ramp is in place to assist your arrival.

• There is no dedicated visitor parking at the Brett Whiteley Studio. Limited on-street parking in surrounding streets has 1 and 2-hour time limits. We recommend allowing extra time to find a parking space or considering alternative transport options.

• Assistance animals are welcome to the Brett Whiteley Studio.

• An internal lift provides access between public levels of the Brett Whiteley Studio.

• The wide staircase to the second level is fitted with handrails on both sides. Tactile ground surface indicators are located at the top and bottom of the stairs to assist visitors with wayfinding.

• An accessible toilet as well as a unisex ambulant toilet are available.

• Visitors have access to reproductions of the artist’s sketchbooks, which are available to view as part of the studio experience. A magnifier can be provided on request to assist visitors in viewing details within the reproductions.

• Seating is available at selected locations on both levels of the studio. Seating with backs and armrests are also available.

• The lower level does not have windows to the street. It has a more enclosed atmosphere, with white walls and consistent artificial lighting throughout the exhibition spaces. The upper-level features large windows that provide natural daylight as well as exhibition lighting.

• The second level features a mezzanine area where Brett Whiteley worked. From this level, visitors have sightlines across to the ground level, providing a visual connection between the different areas of the studio.

At times, a selection of music from Brett Whiteley’s personal collection is played during exhibitions and events. The volume is kept at a comfortable listening level.
