It is time for Ryan's annual Family Reunion at Smokey Lodge by Alturus lake. I love this location, since my grandpa helped build the cabins, so I always think of him. Ryan's family has activities for each night. It was raining when we went up on Friday night, but that was ok because it is Kickapoo Rootbeer and Pinata night.
Kickakpoo Rootbeer is rootbeer that Ryan's grandpa used to make. He always added dry ice that comes out a spout on the top. Its a big tradition, and Maya and Dylan got to experience it for the first time this year.
Since it was raining, Ryan's cousins developed a creative way to entertain the kids. Maya loved the table slide, but it took her a little bit to have the courage to go over to unfamiliar faces. She had no problem going down the slide.
View of the fog during a brief moment of no rain.
We sat outside while we could, and Maya wasted no time getting into the dirt and rocks.
Dylan was the first to go on the pinata. He HATED it and cried when everyone cheered.
Maya, however, needed no help and ran right up and started whacking away.
We shared a cabin with Eric and Lyndsay, Ryan's brother and sister-in law. This made me ultra sensitive to all the noise my kids were making. Maya has never been camping, and I tried to make her as comfortable as possible. We brought up her special tags, blanket, puppy blanket, sheets, port-a-crib, etc. She screamed the first night, as soon as we tried to put her to bed. By screaming, I mean the entire camp heard her. All night. We ended up letting Dylan sleep in her crib, and rocking her to sleep/having her sleep on top of me when she finally fell asleep around 4 am. She hated the cabin. In the morning, she cried and cried as soon as she realized she was still in it.
We went to the fish hatchery with Ryan's brother Bryson and sister in law Heather and Maya's favorite cousin Owen. They are little friends. Owen was far more interested in the fish than Maya, but she still thought it was fun.
Until it was time to go.
Then we went to Redfish Lake and let Maya play in the water.
We met back at the lodge for lunch then went to Alturus for a few hours. Maya could have spent the entire day in the sand and water. She was not very happy about leaving but I knew she really needed a nap. We drove her around for an hour so she could get a little sleep before Bingo night. (I won a few books for Maya). It started to storm, then let up enough to roast marshmallows. Maya loved the fire. We decided that night to let her stay up for as long as possible. Owen brought Maya a little lantern and Grandma Lind gave her a glow stick. That night went a lot smoother. We let her play with the lantern and glow stick until her eyes couldn't stay open. That night there was a huge thunder and lightening storm, not to mention the monsoon outside the cabin. I now understand rolling thunder. It was so loud it shook the cabin. Maya and Dylan slept through the whole thing!
Happy camper in the morning walking in the rocks.
Sunday we went to the dredge and the ghost town Custer. Ryan and I took the tour. It was fun for one time, but I wouldn't go again any time soon. Dylan hated the front pack, but Maya stayed pretty entertained.
An old bath tub in Custer in one of the cabins.
Arguably Maya's favorite person on the trip, Uncle Eric.
After Custer, we had lunch packed up and went home because Maya and Dylan had well-baby appointments on Monday morning.
Two happy babies playing at home.
