Added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 2008, the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes, brings together two historic railway lines that cross the Swiss Alps through two passes. Opened in 1904, the Albula line in the north-western part of the property is 67 km long. It features an impressive set of structures including 42 tunnels and covered galleries and 144 viaducts and bridges. The 61 km Bernina pass line features 13 tunnels and galleries and 52 viaducts and bridges.

“The Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes constitutes an outstanding technical, architectural and environmental ensemble and embodies architectural and civil engineering achievements, in harmony with the landscapes through which they pass.”

The Albula Railway

The Albula Railway is a single track metre gauge railway line, in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It links Thusis on the Hinterrhein (697 m (2,287 ft) above sea level) with the spa resort of St. Moritz in Engadine (1,774 m (5,820 ft) above sea level). Construction of the Albula Railway was begun in September 1898, the opening took place on 1 July 1903, and the extension to St. Moritz commenced operations on 10 July 1904. With its 55 bridges and 39 tunnels, the 61.67 km (38.32 mi) long line is one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railways in the world. [Source]

ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS

- The 5,866m (3.6 miles) long Albula Tunnel, which passes under the watershed between the Rhine and the Danube a few kilometres west of the Albula Pass. With its maximum elevation of 1,820 m (5,970 ft) above sea level, the tunnel is, after the Furka Tunnel, the second highest alpine tunnel in Switzerland

- Between Tiefencastel und Filisur, the train crosses the 35 m (115 ft) m high and 137 m (449 ft) long Schmittentobel Viaduct. Shortly before Filisur, it reaches one of the trademarks of the Albula Railway – and often also the Rhaetian Railway in general – the 65 m (213 ft) high 136 metres (446 ft) long Landwasser Viaduct (seen in the first two images of the post), which in a curve of only 100 m (330 ft) radius leads directly into a tunnel through the cliff face at the opposite end.

- At Filisur station is the junction between the Albula Railway and the branch line from Davos Platz. Between Filisur and Bergün, the train ascends 292 m (958 ft), and runs through the first spiral tunnel. The next section, between Bergün and Preda, is the most demanding example of rail technology on the Albula Railway: in order to overcome the height difference of 417 m (1,368 ft) between Bergün and Preda – in only 6.5 km (4.0 mi) as the crow flies – without requiring excessive slopes or radii, the route is extended by 12 km (7.5 mi) by various engineering structures (including three spiral tunnels, two curved tunnels and four valley crossing viaducts).

The Bernina Railway

The Bernina Railway is a single track 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge railway line forming part of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). It links the spa resort of St. Moritz, in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, with the town of Tirano, in the Province of Sondrio, Italy, via the Bernina Pass. Reaching a height of 2,253 metres (7,392 ft) above sea level, it is the highest railway crossing in Europe. It also ranks as the highest adhesion railway of the continent, and – with inclines of up to 7% – as one of the steepest adhesion railways in the world. [Source]

ROUTE HIGHLIGHTS

- St Moritz is the terminus of both the Albula Railway and the Bernina Railway. As the two railways are powered by different electrification systems, they meet at the same station, but operate on separate lines from separate platforms. The Bernina Railway leaves St Moritz station in an easterly direction, and crosses the Inn River on a 64 m (210 ft) long viaduct. It then passes through the 689 m (2,260 ft) long Charnadüra-Tunnel II, the longest tunnel on the entire route.

- Just past Morteratsch station is the world-famous Montebello Curve, where the line meets the road over the pass. The line and the road will now accompany each other as far as Ospizio Bernina.

- Along the eastern bank of the lake, and, near Ospizio Bernina, Bernina reaches its highest point, at 2,253 m (7,392 ft) above sea level. The Bernina Railway is thereby (mountainside railways excluded) the highest railway line in the Alps, operating as a public railway with year round traffic. As the section from here to Poschiavo is particularly badly affected by drifting snow, countless engineering structures have been erected from the southern dam wall onwards.

The Glacier Express / Bernina Express

Starting in 1930, the Glacier Express is an express train connecting railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. For much of its journey, it also passes along and through the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes. The train is not an “express” in the sense of being a high-speed train, but rather, in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for a long duration travel. In fact it has the reputation of being the slowest express train in the world.

The trip on the Glacier Express is a 7½ hour railway journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass on the highest point at 2,033 m (6,670 ft) in altitude. The entire line is metre gauge (narrow gauge railway), and large portions of it use a rack-and-pinion system both for ascending steep grades and to control the descent of the train on the back side of those grades. The Bernina Express is a train connecting Chur (or Davos) in Switzerland with Poschiavo and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Alps. For most of its journey, the train also passes along and through the World Heritage Site known as the Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina Landscapes.

The trip on the Bernina Express through this World Heritage Site is a four-hour railway journey across 196 bridges, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass on the highest point at 2,253 metres in altitude. The entire line is 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) (metre gauge). NASA ISS023-E-058455 (29 May 2010) – Aurora Australis is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 23 crew member on the International Space Station. Among the views of Earth afforded crew members aboard the ISS, surely one of the most spectacular is of the aurora. These ever-shifting displays of colored ribbons, curtains, rays, and spots are most visible near the North (Aurora Borealis) and South (Aurora Australis) Poles as charged particles streaming from the sun (the solar wind) interact with Earth’s magnetic field, resulting in collisions with atoms of oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere.

The atoms are excited by these collisions, and typically emit photons as a means of returning to their original energy state. The photons form the aurora that we see. The most commonly observed color of aurora is green, caused by photons (light) emitted by excited oxygen atoms at wavelengths centered at 0.558 micrometers, or millionths of a meter. Visible light is reflected from healthy (green) plant leaves at approximately the same wavelength. Red auroras are generated by light emitted at a longer wavelength (0.630 micrometers), and other colors such as blue and purple are also sometimes observed.

While auroras are generally only visible close to the poles, severe magnetic storms impacting Earth’s magnetic field can shift them towards the equator. This striking aurora image was taken during a geomagnetic storm that was most likely caused by a coronal mass ejection from the sun on May 24, 2010. The ISS was located over the Southern Indian Ocean at an altitude of 350 kilometers, with the observer most likely looking towards Antarctica (not visible) and the South Pole. The aurora has a sinuous ribbon shape that separates into discrete spots near the lower right corner of the image.

While the dominant coloration of the aurora is green, there are faint suggestions of red photon emission as well (light fuscia tones at center left). Dense cloud cover is dimly visible below the aurora. The curvature of Earth’s horizon, or limb, is clearly visible as is the faint blue line of the upper atmosphere directly above at top center. The death toll from one of the most powerful storms on record could reach 10,000 according to officials.

So far Typhoon Haiyan is said to have killed 1,200 people in the Philippines and left many more injured, but the figure could rise dramatically after the full devastation of the ferocious storm was realised.

According to the Red Cross, 1,000 have been left dead in the devastated city of Tacloban on the island of Leyte with a further 200 casualties in Samar Province.

Regional police chief Elmer Soria said he was briefed by Leyte provincial Govenor Dominic Petilla late last night and told there were about 10,000 deaths on the island, mostly by drowning and from collapsed buildings.

About four million people are believed to have been affected by the category five storm, according to the country's national disaster agency. This figure includes 800,000 who had to be evacuated before the storm struck.

Winds of up to 235mph and gusts of 170mph left a trail of destruction - triggering major landslides, knocking out power and communications and causing catastrophic widespread damage. Hundreds of homes have been flattened and scores of streets flooded.

The storm is now moving towards mainland Asian and is expected to reach Vietnam coastal areas on Sunday morning while humanitarian experts estimate the number of casualties will rise considerably.

Weather forecasts have also predicted more bad weather could be on the way to the Philippines at the beginning of next week, with high winds expected to arrive on Monday.

The Foreign Office in the Philippines’ capital Manila has had no reports of British casualties but it is feared thousands have been left stranded as a result.

About 15,000 British nationals are said to live on the islands and every year 65,000 visit tourist hotspots like northern Cebu Province and Boracay Island, both of which have been savaged by the storm.

Vietnamese authorities have begun evacuating 100,000 people as they prepare to face the full force of the ferocious weather. 'The evacuation is being conducted with urgency,' disaster official Nguyen Thi Yen Linh said from central Danang City, where some 76,000 were being moved to safety.

Around 300,000 others have been taken to shelters in the provinces of Quang Ngai, Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue. Schools were closed and two deputy prime ministers were sent to the region to direct preparations.

The army has been brought in to provide emergency relief with some 170,000 soldiers assisting people after the typhoon hits.

Haiyan is likely to be a category two or three storm when it hits the Vietnamese coast, but the Red Cross has warned some 6.5 million people in in the country could be affected.

It is expected to reach Da Nang province tomorrow morning before moving up the country's west coast and eventually making its way to the capital, Hanoi.

Weather experts predict the country will experience sea surges, strong winds and up to two feet of rain, triggering massive floods.

Chinese authorities have also issued a level three emergency response throughout the country, ordering fisherman to shelter their boats to prevent any damage.

It will be the 30th typhoon to hit China this year with the central and southern parts of Hainan and Sansha city expected to be hit by downpours in the next 24 hours.

Officials in neighbouring Laos and Cambodia are also taking precautions in an attempt to soften the impact of the ferocious storm.

Humanitarian experts say they expect the number of casualties to be 'massive'. A Red Cross spokesman said: 'We now fear that thousands will have lost their lives.'

The UK has sent a team of three experts to the country today to assess the extent of the damage, after which the Government will decide upon its response, a spokesman for the Department for International Development (Dfid) said.

International Development Secretary Justine Greening has also pledged £6 million worth of emergency aid.

She said: 'My thoughts are with the people of the Philippines, in particular those who have lost loved ones. UK support is now under way.

'Many thousands of people in remote, hard-to-reach communities have lost their homes and everything they own. They are living in the open and completely exposed to the elements.

'The absolute priority must be to reach them with shelter and protection as soon as possible.

'UK support will provide urgently needed access to clean water, shelter, household items and blankets,

'We are also sending additional humanitarian experts from the UK to work with the DfID team and international agencies, including ensuring partners are prioritising the protection of vulnerable girls and women.'

The category-5 super typhoon Haiyan – Chinese for ‘sea bird’ – smashed into the eastern islands of the Philippines with winds nearly 150mph stronger than the St Jude storm which struck the UK in late October.

Save the Children said up to 7,000 schools could have been damaged by Haiyan, as the aid agency battles to reach the hardest hit areas.

The charity's country director Anna Lindenfors said: 'We are very concerned for the poorest and most vulnerable children in some of the hardest hit places like Tacloban where there is likely to be catastrophic damage, especially to the homes of the poorest people who live in buildings made from flimsy materials.'

'While the immediate focus must be on saving lives, we are also extremely worried that thousands of schools will have been knocked out of action or badly affected by the typhoon.

'In the worst hit areas this will have a terrible impact on children's education and it will be important that we help them back to school as quickly as possible.'

Speaking in the aftermath of the storm Paul Knightley, forecast manager at MeteoGroup, described Haiyan as 'one of the strongest typhoons ever seen before on the planet in the modern age'.

'It is an incredibly powerful storm, which has now moved through the Philippines. No doubt we will see all sorts of damage has been caused.

'As far as tropical storms go, this is about the top of the ladder. To get winds approaching 200mph as an average wind speed within the storm - you're talking the top few percent of all storms that have ever occurred.

'It may be one of the - if not the - strongest land-falling storm we've seen for many years, possibly in recorded history.'

The storm brought further misery to thousands of residents of Bohol who had been camped in tents and other makeshift shelters after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the island last month.

At least 5,000 survivors were still living in tents on the island, and they were moved to schools that had been turned into evacuation centres.

Speaking yesterday, Roger Mercado, governor of Southern Leyte, an island off the coast off the popular tourist region of Cebu, told how dense clouds and heavy rains turned day into night.

‘When you’re faced with such a scenario, you can only pray and pray and pray,’ he said, as weather forecasters warned of ‘catastrophic’ damage.

The governor added: ‘My worst fear is that there will be many massive loss of lives and property.’

Daredevil Photographer Risks his Life

Fearlessly placing himself directly in the path of deadly lightning strikes, a photographer captures images that highlight the terrific violence of nature.
Obsessed since childhood with the massive thunderstorms of South Africa's high-veld plains, Mitchell Krog, 39, has been taking pictures of lightning for 16 years.

Giving his photographs dramatic names such as 'Fire and Ice' and 'Killer Storm', Mr Krog who lives in the Magaliesburg region of South Africa has captured some of the most impressive lightning strikes committed to camera.

Holding his image of three simultaneous strikes just outside Pretoria called 'Monumental Chaos' as his photographic masterpiece, he has a devil-may-care attitude towards his dangerous photography.

He said: 'I don't fear lightning so whenever possible I will happily place myself directly in the path of an approaching storm and I've dodged some close strikes'.
'Since I was a young child I have had a fascination with electrical thunderstorms. I grew up on the high-veld of South Africa where our summers are filled with thunderstorms.

'I'm a bit of a daydreamer and easily mesmerised so I would often spend hours watching storms brew and would only run inside once the lightning or rain let me.
'With each storm I photographed I felt myself wanting more and I kept finding new ways of pushing the envelope and improving on what I had done before.
It was in early days of the Southern Hemisphere summer that he snapped his stunning work, 'Monumental Chaos'.
'I was on my way home from Pretoria when I saw a massive storm front brewing to the east', he says, 'I quickly made my way to the Voortrekker Monument just outside Pretoria as I just had a feeling I would have a chance of being directly in the storm's path.

'Often the problem with lightning photography is that it starts raining before the storm is close enough to capture, and before I knew it the rain started pelting down so much so, that the monument completely disappeared from view and this forced me to quickly seek shelter in my vehicle.

'The rain started slowing down after a few minutes and I knew I had to dash back out of the vehicle as I knew it was by no means over.
'Then came the first of some big very and very close lightning strikes and in between wiping my lens I was constantly adjusting settings to cater for what may or may not come next.

'While I do own a lightning trigger, I seldom use it as I prefer full manual control over my exposures using only a cable release and this day was no different.
'Then came the moment of what I termed 'Monumental Chaos,' when three massive lightning strikes came tumbling down to earth within 15 seconds.

'I initially thought the closest strike was just too close and that it would have blown my exposure but when I brought it up on the LCD screen I must have been grinning from ear to ear.
'In nearly six years of storm photography this single image portrays, more than any other image I've taken - the sheer chaos and power of a lightning storm.'
Going professional two years ago, Mr Krog has captured the effects lightning has on the surrounding environment on the dry plains of South Africa.

He added: 'With my image 'Fire and Ice' I was inside cooking dinner for my wife when I heard what I thought was thunder.
'I turned the heat down on the stove and rushed outside to see if it was true or if I was merely imagining things. What I saw took my breath away and I dashed inside to grab my camera.

'Some lightning strikes had started a grass fire which was causing the whole sky to glow a beautiful red-orange colour and in amongst this all lightning strikes were dropping from the sky creating the most incredible contrasting colours. This remains to be one of my most memorable images.'

Observing storms from start to finish, Mitchell is all too aware of the power of storms.
'I spent about an hour photographing one storm but eventually only ever settled on this one image to publish', he said.

'The next day I read on various news web sites how some violent storms had hit some parts of Johannesburg even causing a few deaths. The headlines were 'Killer Storm' and I went with that as the title of the image.'

However for Mitchell, the high point of his photography is working during a storm at sunset.
'My ultimate when it comes to storm photography is capturing a storm at sunset. This requires being in the right place at the right time, a little co-operation from the elements and a certain amount of luck.

'I've captured a number of storms at sunset but they don't always work out the way I wanted them to but occasionally the pieces all fall into place as it does with 'Stormy Sunset.'

Skywalking - Not for the Faint Hearted!

Skywalking is the newest and extremely risky photography fad to take the internet by storm. It consists of a photographer (or photographers) making their way to the top of very tall structures and clicking pictures which would make a normal person’s stomach drop off. This trend is certainly not for the faint-hearted. As it began on the Russian web, it is sometimes referred to as “Russian Planking”. Russian teens pose or “skywalk” hundreds of feet in the air with no safety equipment.

It all began with Russian teenager Marat Dupri. The daredevil began scaling buildings and other high-rise structures in Moscow in 2011. By September of that year, several of his photographers were featured on new sites , including the Daily Meal and Metro UK. Busk, a Portuguese news site also showed several photos of Russian teenagers imitating Dupri.

These pictures truly offer a glimpse of life on the edge.

Dupri began skywalking along with his fearless friends at the tender age of 19. As people aren’t normally allowed to go onto the roof of tall structures, he routinely has to sneak past security cameras and guards to capture breathtaking views of Moscow.

Many of us would get weak knees at the thought of climbing up to such heights and walking along such thin ledges, especially without any safety equipment. However, Dupri says that the experience offers him a sense of serenity.

"When I am on the roof I have a feeling that the whole world is by my feet," he said. "All my problems and trouble are left somewhere down. The height exhilarates me. I am enjoying with my hometown views. It gives me energy and fills me with enthusiasm to make new and great shots."

Apart frm Dupri, the next person to watch for is the real-life Spiderman, “Mad” Max Polatov. He enjoys nothing more than hanging from the outside of buildings by only his feet. The new-age climber and photographer initially started climbing as just a hobby. However, it soon developed into a culture of its own with more and more Russian teenagers attaining death-defying heights every year.

These skywalkers have clicked pictures from locations that seem almost impossible to get to. They have mounted statues, cranes, bridges and ladders across Russia in order to get that perfect shot.

Covered from head-to-toe in body paint, these brave models blend in perfectly alongside a succession of wild animals.

After seven-hours in make-up over four days, they look completely at home whether tangling with a 12ft-long python, staring down cheetahs, or riding on the back of an elephant.

The bizarre images were taken by wildlife photographer Lennette Newell and form part of her 'Ani-Human' series of portraits.

Growing up the daughter of a vet in San Francisco, her childhood dream was to become one of the animals her father used to treat.

Some four decades later, the 52-year-old artist has finally realised her ambition - with the help of models who have nerves of steel.

Ms Newell said: 'I wanted to show humans and their animal brothers in a new light that we maybe hadn't been seen before.

'The exotic animals came from in and around Los Angeles from renowned Hollywood and television trainers and we shot at the famous Smashbox Studios in LA.'

A great amount of care was taken to ensure that the animals were treated humanely during the shoot.

Ms Newell said: 'Each of the animals came with their trainers and every second they were observed and watched whenever the models came in contact with the animals.

'Some like Susie the elephant were fine to work with, the only problem she posed was how to get the model Kaela on top.

'In the end we used a long ladder and then we set about photographing inside the mammoth studios.

'For another model, Jasmina, and the cheetah and tigers it was bit different.

'We had to make sure that they were comfortable around her and that she had ample time to make a getaway should they become uncomfortable.'

But the fun project had a serious side as it is meant to remind viewers that man is an animal himself.

'I think that we forget our origins as animals ourselves,' Ms Newell said. 'We need to reconnect with nature and we should be closer to the animals that live on this world.

'We should look on these pictures as something more natural and not as odd as they might first seem.

'I used to fantasise about being the animals that my father used to treat and now with this project I am a little closer.'

Working with 75lb snakes and playful tigers proved difficult for the thin female models.

Ms Newell said: 'The tigers just wanted to play, but with their claws and the fact that Jasmina was naked, it was a problem for her obviously.

'But that aside, the cats were watched at all times and everyone had a great time during the shoot.'
