A chapter on Faith and Obedience (Hebrews 11)

"We walk by faith, not by sight."

- Corinthians 5 : 7

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

- Hebrews 11 : 1

I'm going for an interview in a couple of hours! I think walking into any unknown situation, job or interview is an exercise in faith. Walking into the unknown, who knows what lies ahead ?

In a dizzying instant everything ground to a halt.

Last week I had THE chat with the Director. Before the chat, I made an ultimatum with God. Unexpectecly, It's all been quite cozy here, and my colleagues have been earnest and supportive. The work has been interesting and very decent. So I said to God, if this my "exile", where you want to plant and grow me, make me an offer that I can't turn down... but the Director made me an offer that I couldn't  accept. They wanted to keep me, but I stayed, it would be a step down in job title and a paycut.

... the dream has ended.

[And then there was the little debacle where I nearly applied for a job in the adjacent department. A death-trap job, with essentially 3 roles rolled into one. Thankfully, I have colleagues who have cared to share...]

Moon landing

And so ...I've been quietly working here for almost 3 months. It's a temp job, and I'm still not sure if it will become a not-temp job. But it's really really strange, because I never thought I would be working here. It feels like it should be enemy territory and a healthcare setting could be a prickly place to work with many complex personalities (like candy wrapped people with veiled hearts).

And yet, it's not that. It's not a like a stray astronut landing on the moon, on savage and unchartered land. As the astronut touches down she sees, there are lights. Warm glowing lights... although not all of them are friendly.

It's kind of a cozy place for now. Not perfect, and people are still many flavoured and complex but everyone has been unusually candid and forthright. It surprises me that despite the name of the company, its employees aren't as homogenous as I thought it would be. There are even some Christians here (!!) Everyone is amazingly supportive of me going on a mission trip ...

What lies next ? Is this the exile place I've been planted for now ?

... I don't know. But I have been applying for jobs, to little response. When I do get to interviews, I wonder what I'm doing wrong ...

Hello! It's been about 9 months since I last posted... and I think this has been a long time coming. This might be the last time I'll post here. I'll likely this keep this space but...

La Debs is become a normie. I'll likely choose to complain, blab and muse about random things to the people around me and journal about the more introspective and private aspects of my life. For more visual, inane and sometimes social updates... instagram lives on!

But 20 years (EGADS!) is a long time. So long lives the neurotic ramblings of debs in this tiny dingy space. Lurkers (if any), say your final farewell ... or join me on instagram (if you must).

And in possibly my final life update here...

I'm grateful for having this tiny space to ruminate and share my random musings. Dear blog blog, it's been two decades of growing up with me :) We're getting older, and no longer cool ... but life goes on.

In real life things... 9 months is a little shorter than I expected, but debs are looking for a new workplace. Life is wind-y, but I think it's never a waste. Truly, I believe that life is about the journey, not just the end goal. So time is never wasted, experiencing new things and meeting new people. In previous episodes, I might have described myself as a tiny fish, thrown into the deep blue sea. Or a tiny fish, shell shocked when many other fish are thrown into the same pond (i.e. Covid times). But this time, I'm both glad and grateful for HIM that is always with me :) and and also for the warmth of the people around me:

Family - that both chide and comfort me, in my (seemingly) reckless decision to leave

Friends that chide me and offer guidance - that I need to be more introspective and learn from some of my mistakes. Respond better and learn to be more self aware

Friends that give advice - Various types of advice on applying for jobs. Some about being more confident and gungho about the jobs I apply for. Others, that the opportunity to learn is more important than the job title

Friends that help - Edit my horrible CV and sneakily check-in on my job applications in certain places

Friends that encourage and egg me on - that stick by me and agree that it seems a bit ridiculous that the powers that be would be so exacting, about disliking me for seemingly tiny tiny mistakes - maybe it's not a job fit, and in believing that I deserve better

The powers that be - I'm conflicted here .... I guess negative experiences are still experiences. They taught me that it is possible to differentiate between personal relationships and work things. I'm thankful for the opportunities they have granted me - both small and mammoth sized tasks, all new things I have never done before. Sometimes, I didn't survive, and I felt like I got stepped on. But thankful for the exposure nevertheless.

It's almost the end of the year! Whilst things are looking slightly meh right now... yours truly is an optimist and and hopeless dreamer. I'm sure the future is infinitely bright and all things are possible! ... Lilac flowers and frolicking unicons (lol).

Toodles, and thank you for journeying will me~ Dear blog blog and everybody, anybody...

From tomorrow starts a new adventure, and I will sail through new seas!

This time, I'm glad to say that it was on a whole a happy ending. The main reason to leave was still because the communication between my manager and I was hmmmm I think the best way to describe it is fuzzy. It sucks to have to waste more brain cells second guessing her instructions or intentions. I left because I wanted growth and to try new things...

But on the whole, I think on the whole, we have both grown. This time, I'm leaving with alot of good memories, and having made lots of friends and cozy relationships. It surprised me that in my short stay here, it seems like this small potato has made alot of connections, I've never had to say so many "goodbyes".

But I'm glad that this parting was amicable - even though it took many by surprise. This time, there is no bitterness or sour feelings, no bulllying and I don't like I am being dropped into the deep dark ocean.

If anything, if this were a movie... this would be the scene where the protagonist moves away. It's a warm balmy day and sun is shinning brightly. Debs in on a truck with all her stuff in tow. The truck starts, and is about to drive off. Lots of people are gathered to say goodbye. The atmosphere is teary but cheerful!

A new adventure begins! :)

Je suis pret

The year was 2019, and things were kind of a mess. I was feeling very much like a lone fish swimming in the deep blue sea. No panic.

Then 2020 arrived and in an instant, I found myself swimming in a sea of fish. As if a whole aquarium of fish had suddenly been tossed into the sea with me. It was kind of crowded, and not party kind of crowd either. All of us were struggling, threshing, bewildered and thrown together. Some panic.

Fast forward to 2024. I’ve got my shoe laces tied and let’s go!

But let’s backtrack a little bit…

To end of 2023 and start 2024 with a small testimony~

2023 in a nutshell was kind of sour and quite a bumpy ride. The last I blogged, I probably wrote about a project that was thrust upon me but that I wanted to see to completion. Well, that bombed. The new HRMS included an analytics tool uses Power BI and all the data could be pulled directly from within… so doing it manually became entirely redundant (…so long as the system data is clean). Then my entire team left, and I received poor ratings in my appraisal because I was appraised by people that I barely work with and objectives that were not my KPIs. This year, I think the new management caused alot of stress on all of us and it certainly brought out the really ugly political side of people.

But there were some spots of sunshine this year. I’m still grateful for friends and colleagues whom accept me for all my idiosyncrasies. I found colleagues who uplift me and keep me in check. While I realized that some will flip like pancakes, there are still some genuine gems out there. Lastly, The new HR team is really awesome too. Fun, energetic, silly and driven (I half expected that they would only hire 3 headed dragons or psychopathic defective humans).

It’s been a beautiful 3 years and I’m grateful for all the opportunities granted me… but even if my boss has stopped exploding in meetings, I’m under no illusion that she likes me, or that I will ever get promoted. So I’m looking for a new place!

I started applying for jobs and going for interviews…some could really be described as *awkward* … but it really sucks when I felt like I had a really interview, and yet the answer ultimately was still NOPE. So I was eyeing a particular position, but I was pretty sure it was closed. I might… have also whinged (prayed) that I didn’t want to have to apply for so many jobs / go for so many interviews >___>

I was getting pretty stressed and dejected… when I had a *bing!* moment. It sounds like such a cliche asian thing but I realized once again how I was holding on to certain misconceptions by measuring my worth based on my job, or my grades, things that I have or don’t have. I was beating myself for failing interviews or “not being good enough”.

But the truth is that our worth is found in Him, and God loves us unconditionally . Whether we are rich or poor, have lots of things, or nothing.

So I learnt to let go. I learnt to stop agonizing over every single application and interview. I’ll just do what I need to do and leave the rest in his hands. I prayed “Daddy Lord, these are my options right now, but I’m going to leave this with you. I pray that you plant me in a place where you can use me and grow me. No matter whether I get a job at A or B… or not. I know you love me just the same. Thank you and love you. Amen~”

レベルUP!やった!

Hello thar! This is little fish signing in.

Just wanted to share a little life update and testimony.

But in short, I’ve been absent because… I’ve realized that human connections are great. While its lovely and cosy to be able to post out into the void, get things off my chest and just have nothing argue back at you..

It’s also nice to share life things with people. Who might … not be able to change anything in your situation but could grouse along with you and get indignant (or better yet pray with you). Or might have opinions and ideas on how to improve thinga. Or might smack you if you do something stupid….

(On a random note, it behooves me that my thesis project was about behavioural feedback but I never thought about the implications or application in real life…)

So an update from last episode of TLDR…

Debs was quite content with the present situation, life things pretty stable, job going good. Adulting is happening! So I should be grateful and stop complaining about the small things…

Then like the main character at the start of RPG that waltzes up to the top of a hill and looks down only to realize… ohno. It’s only just starting. It’s not green pastures and blue skies that lie ahead but a myriad of obstacles and challenges….

Our (kindly) old CEO retired and his replacement is militant and inflicting godzilla-like fear and havoc in the organization. My boss resigned.

!!! He seemed so enmashed with the system, I thought he was going to be here forever! -devastated-

Thus, my days as well protected small potato were coming to an end. Enter interim boss aka the dragon lady from our parent company

It seems like she was here to fill the gap and there was some contention with boss on his management style. Yet it didn’t seem like she was totally inline with new CEO.

What was clear was that her expectations of my team were different… and lofty. Her instructions, were sparse. This resulted in sometimes shocking and sudden explosions.

(Background terror: we are currently being merged back into the parent group so it feels like they’ve got their tentacles digging into every facet of our business. Our our HR systems are being changed. They’re pretty half baked and obviously, the differences in our business was never taken into consideration)

TESTIMONY

There’s been alot of tension since New CEO arrived, but my team has been pretty well protected.

I have to say, that in all my working years… my soon to be ex-boss probably is the best embodiment of what I think a good manager should be. Not just a physical meat shield or delegator of tasks, but one that provides stewardship. Hetakes the effort to understands us and tries to work out work related issues together. He also stated that it was his job to protect and shield the team against what he felt was “turbulence” or external problems that might effect the team

;__; Such a beautiful picture. But certainly not a perfect one. Protecting the team from turbulences meant that he bore the brunt of the criticism from management — remember that new CEO? Right about this time he started stomping about like an enraged godzilla and dolling out complaints willy nilly and seemed intent on weeding out the old management.

Much tension was in the air. But we were none the wiser on the details. Management it seems was unhappy with us, but we didn’t know why.

A new project was … thrust upon me. Debs to help with Data dashboarding … across departments. This sounds like a new project that would take up alot of time, and take me away from my core job of L&D. I’m not sure if I can deliver, since I must understand the data to make the dashboard. How will I help other departments? But dashboarding and data is an area I would like to develop, to pivot away from just learning - so okay. I think it’s a good opportunity for me, daunting as it may be.

I just felt that … something could have been done about the process. What started as a tentative question on my interest (where I voiced my concerns) then became my new project project… and part of my KPI, without my explicit consent.

//Tldr; skip above and start here for the TESTIMONY! … But you’ve probably read the above.//

I’m doing my bible readings according to the plan and everyday I find it really amazing. I think its such a base revelation but… how can something written so long ago and in a different context STILL be so relevant!?

Everyday, I find myself journeying together. i look forward to my daily tidbit of advice and encouragement for the day that always is so timely for my situation :)

Given the current instability at work, I find myself digging down deep to ask for some HALPP! Asking for His divine wisdom, for mercy for favour in this situation… because what can I do ? ;__; This is kind of a “I don’t know what I don’t know” kind of situation. So all I can do is give it back God.

I thank You for all that you have provided for me, and all the opportunities you have provided :) But also, surely You placed me here in the marketplace for a reason. So yahweh, I pray for your continued providence and guidance. I pray for Your mercy to be upon me, my bosses and the management. I pray for your favour to be upon me from the bosses and management.

… and it seems like its working. I don’t think anyone has voiced it out (except that one time I complained about it with non-office friends during a lunch… how likely was it that they would have heard me?) but maybe with a better understanding of us, interim boss’s instructions are now more clear. Compared to the starting point where she was just screaming bloody murder about everything and complaining that we were underperforming and not taking ownership. But lady, how do we perform without knowing the expectations?

So okay, this is a minor miracle and a vast improvement … that seems to have mysteriously materialized. Also, it’s not perfect. Her management style is quite different and more micro. We have alot more meetings. But I’ll accept it so long as it gets the work done. Maybe setting things “right” requires closer management? If more regular updates means that targets and expectations can be more rational, that’s good too.

It has its merits as well. I’m still going to be presenting the dashboard in meetings (it seems) but building the dashboard together bit by bit means that I will actually understand the data. It won’t be a death march to management meeting.

In short, things are looking up. Debs just doing what Debs does, but I heard that the management is pleased? Things are moving and changing… God is moving and changing things, and Debs just doing~

Wheeh. That was a long update. Anyway, the journey moves onwards~~

… NO THE END.

2023

Heeey! Itsa new yeaar!

A little late to the game, but I'll take this chance to reflect (briefly) on the year and set some goals for the new year. Maybe you should too ? :D I kind of feel that the 1st of Jan should always be a holiday (and it is...) to give us some time to recalibrate and reflect.

//TLDR; Summary Alert!!

2022 ... has been an interesting year. Not an especially rough year, but an interesting one for me. This year saw the pandemic reaching a tail end (finally!) in many places, but it's kind of been a mandatory rest year for me. I had COVID on my birthday, and then spent most of December recovering from a persistent not-covid flu. For the first time in my life, I had conjuctivitis which ... wasn't itchy but blurred my vision and caused a white sticky discharge leak from the corners of my eyes. ;___; I thought my eyes were leaking, like the white part of my eyeballs were leakingggg...

Effectively, this meant that I probably spent what would have been the more exciting parts of the year sitting at home and resting. But really, it's not all bad.

Continuing in the vein of my last journal entry, I'd to start the year with some Gratitude!

I'm really glad to be safe and relatively healthy. To have a job and a nice boss and colleagues that put up with all my nonsense, and sometimes join along. A boss that shields us from the debris that falls from above .. I have friends who accept me for who I am and indulge me in my rather restricted food choices, and travel along with me in many many misguided adventures.

I'm glad for the opportunity to try and learn new things at work. To be in a place where they encourage me to pursue my interests and grant me opportunities to work in those areas (even though being thrown into projects can be daunting).

With the pandemic coming to an end (?), this year saw the return of travel! And travel we did... to the land of Sausage and beer! I'm also really grateful the opportunity to travel to travel with friends and family and explore new places together :)

In the year ahead, I have a couple of Goals:

GRATITUDE

This year, I'm going to learn to live with more gratitude and stop being so entitled. To count my blessings and opportunities as they come instead of making comparions with others about things that I have and don't have.

JESUS

To always, always grow and learn to live a more God-centred life. This also means, understanding AND giving control to God. This is an area that I've always struggled wrestled with. I have my goals, and things that I want.

But I know, and I acknowledge that all things belong to God. All things come in his time and his provisions are always enough soo my verses for this season are:

26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

-Matthew 6: 26 - 31
So think it this ties with gratitude. There's no need to strive and compare. God hears us, and he will provide.

FINANCES

I've been saying this for a while. But I think it's time to get my monies in order. Debs going to learn how to manage a budget and to invest. I don't have much money, but I should learn how to be more prudent with my spending.

... yeah not much elaboration on this one until I do some research. But in general, I just feel like I shouldn't be squandering my resources frivolously.

Hi 2023, and 8% GST. My pocket does feel a bit smaller now ;__;
pink hide

Gratitude - Two Ways

It's the end of the year! So it's time to set some goals before the the new year right ? ...

I think I'm just going to end of the year with some Gratitude :)

Just the other day, I was wallowing in a bit of self-pity and so I said to colleague, I thought I ought to change my job title to "resident chaser". All I ever seem to do is chase people to complete endless trainings.

She laughed and in response said, "Yeah, that's true. There are many deadlines for us to catch up on and endless other tasks to complete, but I'm grateful that our colleagues are cooperative, so that we can all get things done on time.

ouch. Stab.right.here :'[

But it's true. Getting things done is a team effort, and it could be a lot worse if the staff were recalcitrant.

... so I'm grateful for colleagues that help me to get things done and for some who help me to think positvely (and not feel so self-entitled).

On the flip side, I'm grateful for the interns who empathize with me when I receive backlash from sending out those chaser emails (also known as "evil emails") in the form of angry indignant phone calls.

--

On a totaaaally separate note... my left eye feels kind of squishy and my vision isn't great.. This flu is ... strange.
