🌱 From Visitors to Restoration Champions! 🌍💚
What an inspiring way to experience the Usambara Mountains! Our wonderful group of visitors joined the our team and local community members at our tree nursery, volunteering their time to prepare and care for seedlings for the upcoming rainy season. 🌱🤝These young trees will soon travel from the nursery to our larger landscape restoration sites, where they will help restore degraded land, strengthen biodiversity, protect ecosystems, and support local communities. 🌳🌿For us, sustainable tourism is more than exploring beautiful landscapes — it is about giving back to the places we visit.
During the winter, our team prepares everything for the next planting season
Right now, they are filling nursery bags with soil that, in the coming weeks, will each receive a seed. As the days gradually become longer and warmer, the conditions become ideal for germination, marking the beginning of a new growing season.
Fun fact
giant sequoias, found naturally only in California, actually need fire to reproduce. The heat from a wildfire dries out their cones and causes them to open, releasing seeds that are barely the size of an oat flake.Those tiny seeds can grow into the largest trees on the planet by volume. Mature sequoias protect themselves with bark up to 18 inches thick, insulating the trunk from heat that would destroy most other trees.It's a reminder that in some forests, fire isn't only destructive. It's part of how the forest renews itself.

Dropping off our sapling army in their new home. They may look sweet and delicate now, but the nursery life (with its perfect shade and easy watering) is officially over. Next stop: Tree Hardening Boot Camp. Think 'drop-and-give-me-twenty (new roots)' under the real Santa Cruz sun. It’s survival-of-the-fittest training so they can stand tall and become the ultimate windbreaker line. Good luck, little guys—we’re counting on you to hold the line!
