My Thoughts:

This is the third in the Peshtigo Fire Chronicles and this is Willow Deeren's story. Having lost her home and part of her memory, Willow still has her family. Even though her dreams of becoming a teacher have gone up in smoke with the rest of the town, she does open an orphanage to help those children who are displaced or truly orphaned. She has the help of Valentine Ashardt, who is a violin maker, who is also nursing a broken heart over his missing daughter Mary since the fire.  These two find shared goals and companionship with one another. However, both are keeping secrets from one another as well.

They also have attracted danger. Yes, even though this is an orphanage and doing good, someone doesn't want them to succeed. Throw in a bit of mystery while these two and their entire town try to uncover themselves from the ashes and to rebuild and you have a genuine, good read. I enjoyed getting to visit with previous characters and their stories come full circle.

Avrie Swan is a Christian author and avid reader with a love for all things historical. Having grown up exploring antique stores and museums, she eventually decided to combine her interest in history with her love for writing and began working on her first full-length novel at the age of fourteen. Hello, folks!

It’s hard to believe Sparks of Hope is the third and final entry in The Peshtigo Fire Chronicles series. Writing this book was bittersweet… but also undeniably exciting. Willow and Valentine’s story took me some time to develop, and the result is a book with a lot of heart. Their tale explores themes of found family and growth while also rounding out Carina and Charlotte’s journeys. I hope you enjoy the conclusion to their stories!

One of my favorite elements in Sparks of Hope is Valentine’s occupation as a luthier. My family has always enjoyed music, and since I took violin lessons for several years when I was younger, I thought it only fitting to include a violin maker in one of my stories. I didn’t know much about the process of building violins when I started my research for the book, but I soon discovered it’s a fascinating and detailed craft. I have the utmost respect for the skilled people who shape the instruments enjoyed by so many.

While music plays a small role in Sparks of Hope, the story’s central theme is purpose. Have you ever wondered what God’s plan was for your life? That question weighs heavily on Willow’s mind after a disaster ruins all her carefully laid plans. She finds herself needing to choose a new path and pursue a different dream…although achieving it may not be quite as simple as she hopes.

My Thoughts:

It was like coming back from the dead for Mei Lin after being imprisoned for six years. Now all of a sudden, she is being let go, but not quite. She has finally someone helping her escape and she needs to run and hide. But who can she call? Her parents nor her husband ever came for her, and why was that? 

This was a great ending for the Wright Heroes series. This is Ethan's story and the reuniting with his long thought dead wife. That is why neither he nor her parents came for her. This all took place right before the pandemic closed the world. Mei Lin found evidence against a fellow doctor in China that had him and those he worked for locking her up, forever he thought. Now she is out and has reached out to the one who promised to protect her, her husband.

Lots of suspense and running for their lives, but on top of that there is an emotional depth to this story as they work out their relationship and the lies that kept them apart. I had a hard time putting this one down and I think it is the best to end this series.

Saying Goodbye to Shadow Cove

When I typed the last sentence of Shadowing You, the final Wright Heroes of Maine book, I was dehydrated from all the tears I’d shed. These Wrights feel like family to me. I can’t imagine leaving them behind.

From about book five, I knew about Ethan, the son his father kept secret. I didn’t know his plot yet, though. When I met Mei Lin and understood where she’d been for the last six years, I couldn’t wait to share their story.

But first, I want you to get to know Gavin.

The Wright family has two branches. Roger Wright and his wife, Peggy, raised six sons on an apple farm in central Maine. Roger was a physician who never put his work ahead of his children. He was steady and present, the kind of man his boys grew up wanting to be.

His brother Gavin is a different story. He was a CIA officer, gallivanting the world while his wife, Evelyn, raised their five daughters. For most of the girls’ lives, he was distant and guarded, always one assignment away from coming home. Even after he retired from the CIA, he started a business that kept him close to DC—and far from his family in Shadow Cove.

None of those girls knew anything about their father’s son.

My Thoughts:

This story had me feeling the bitter cold of winter and ff the dangers one can find especially in frontier times of caves that were hidden in Kentucky. Roisin Duncan is just trying to keep her and her father's world isolated. She does not want her father nor herself to be carried away due to their oddities. Unfortunately, her father has discovered something most interesting to him, and he is bound and determined to go exploring even in the midst of a snowstorm. So, Roisin sets out to find him, by herself.

Jared McFadin, a soldier of the Revolutionary War, is also trying to live a secluded life. More due to the scars the war has left on his body and on his mind. I However, when Roisin shows up at his door half frozen in search of her father, he can do nothing but help her. And so, their adventure begins.

Jared and Roisin meet in an unconventional way, but in such a way that both could only meet one another. They were perfect for one another, and I enjoyed their blossoming love story amidst the dangers of weather, disease, and even broken bones. This is not a long story, but it is full of such vivid descriptions of Kentucky that I could almost smell the cold.

Prior to becoming officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) went by many names including Combat Fatigue, Shell Shock, and Soldier’s Heart. However, none of these categorizations even came about until the Civil War.

When considering the horrors faced by the soldiers that fought for our freedom 250 years ago, though, there is no doubt that it would have had a lasting effect on the mental health of a great number of men. But we all know that PTSD is extensively complicated, rather than simple homesickness. Not only can it bring flashbacks and nightmares, but it can cause hypervigilance, insomnia, and considerably more. It affects a person’s thoughts, behavior, mood, and overall quality of life.

In this Wilderness Romance series, and particularly in Thawing the Frontiersman’s Heart, I strove to give readers a small glimpse of what this might have looked like for the Revolutionary War soldiers to which we owe so much.

My Thoughts:

This was a story that was historically interesting. Dealing with guilds and the fact that women were not really allowed to be even in one, even it was for making dresses. Women really did not have a lot of options for work in the past.

Margaret Cooper is a very headstrong and independent woman. The reasons for this are addressed in the book and I don't blame her for being wary. She is the illegitimate sister of a Lord. Her brother has been very kind and generous to her, however she knows that anything can change at any time, especially given the rules of the day. So, she sets out to become an apprentice to make women's dresses. She is not really welcomed in the guild's apprenticeship, but due to some urging from her brother she is reluctantly allowed to participate. Except, Peter Sloane her guild master has not been teaching her. 

Peter was a very laid-back character. He liked Margaret, but he was told to accept her as an apprentice and not teach her anything. The other guild members were upset with him, so he was between a rock and a hard place. He for the most part was an amiable fellow, dealing with the family business since his father seems to be suffering Altheimer's. So, it was inevitable that Peter and Margaret clashed.

Then comes the Valentine's that quite bewilder Margaret. I liked that some of their most heartfelt confessions were contained in them.

My Thoughts:

This story certainly took me through a gamut of emotions. Starting with a tragedy and ending in a sweet embrace. This is a story of an autistic woman and the man that her late husband left to be her trustee. A man that really didn't think they should be together with in the beginning and definitely did not understand her. 

Jacob is still reeling from the crushing loss of the death of his best friend Clay and the only one that really ever understood him. Now he must be the trustee of Clay's wife, Olivia's estate. She is one person Jacob does not understand. And so, they begin and uneasy companionship to get through the grief and the necessities of life after a death. They both have Ellie, the woman who first took Olivia in when she turned eighteen and was kicked out of the care home she lived in. As this uneasy partnership grows into more, Jacob and Olivia both realize they may have more in common than just Clay after all. And Clay probably saw it all along as he left his precious wife's care in Jacob's hands. A story of second chances in a most surprising way.

Words cannot adequately describe how much I enjoyed this story. Read it, you won't be sorry you did.

Some stories come from imagination . . . and others feel gently placed on your heart for a reason. Until I Knew You is one of those stories.

At its heart, this is a story about grief, love, and healing, but also about the quiet ways God works in our lives, even when we do not fully understand what He is doing. Jacob and Olivia’s journey was never meant to be easy, but it was always meant to lead somewhere meaningful.

Olivia was a character I approached with a lot of care. I truly wanted to do this right. Along the way, I had the privilege of speaking with several people who have worked closely with autistic children and adults. They were so generous with their time, answering my questions and sharing their experiences, and I am incredibly grateful.

“If you have met one person with autism, you have met one person with autism.” Patricia’s words stayed with me and shaped how I wrote Olivia. Every individual is unique, and it was important to me that Olivia reflect her own voice, her own experiences, and her own way of seeing the world.

There is a moment in this story where Olivia observes a black widow, something many would fear or turn away from, but she sees beyond that fear and recognizes that even it was created with purpose. Not random or a mistake. That realization reflects something deeper woven throughout this story, that each of us, no matter how we are seen or misunderstood, was created with intention and for a purpose.

I wrote this story to the best of my knowledge and ability, with respect, care, and a genuine desire to honor both the beauty and the challenges within it. My hope and my prayer is that you not only enjoy this story, but that you also find something meaningful within its pages.

It happened so fast. … Clay didn’t make it. … Clay is dead.

I could still feel the heat of Jacob’s breath against my face, his nearness burning my skin. I wanted to scream, How dare you! Leave me be! But his words rushed through me, painfully churning their way through my heart, touching the deepest parts of my innermost being, and I felt them there for a moment, but it was the fear of being without Clay that clenched my throat.

My Thoughts:

This novel transported me back into history from the first page of this couple's first meet. Seemingly from different worlds, these two have been told they are not meant for one another. Sam Hicks is half Cherokee and an invaluable asset to the Americans during the War of 1812 and continues to be. The moment Susanna Moore bumps into him, he experiences feelings he never has before. Susanna on the other hand was trying to hide from the man that her father deems is the perfect match for her. A much older man that Susanna does not love nor does she want to be married too.

Her father has double standards on who can marry his daughter even though his wife is half Cherokee. Poor Susanna, I felt her anger and pain of the double standards her father pushed on her. Then due to circumstances, Sam is ordered to be Susanna and her brother's guard. Things get a little bit interesting as you have two people who are attracted to one another always in each other's presence.

This was an interesting novel going back to 1813 and the turmoil and trouble that was still going on as our nation was still so young. Of allegiances and battles that shaped her, and of a love that would not flicker and go out. There was a couple of battlefronts for freedom taking place, the battlefield and within the heart.

The seed idea for A Contrary Betrothal came from another author a number of years ago. She proposed a collection of stories in which the heroes were all Native Americans who served their country in different wars. I still love the idea even though it never came to pass! In fact, I loved it so much, I went ahead and wrote my story. And that story became Bent Tree Bride, first published with Smitten Romance. Now, it’s joining my Scouts of the Georgia Frontier series as book six.

Many people are unaware that the Cherokees fought alongside American troops under Andrew Jackson during the Creek War or Red Stick War, a portion of the War of 1812 that occurred in present-day Alabama. The Creek people were allied to the British, as the Cherokees themselves had been during the American Revolution. The motivation for this was, of course, to keep their land. Their warriors were so valuable to Jackson that they broke the ineffective cannonade on the town of Tohopeka, swimming across the river from behind and making the victory possible that ended the war at Horseshoe Bend.

Sam Hicks, the hero of A Contrary Betrothal, is a mixed-blood Cherokee lieutenant with the head of a scholar and the heart of a warrior. His struggle to intermingle the old ways and the new ways proves reflective of the metamorphosis of his people. Even though he’s been educated as the wealthy son of a chief, he knows his white colonel’s daughter, Susanna Moore, is out of his reach. But when he’s assigned to guard her and her little brother at a wilderness fort, he can no longer deny his attraction to the feisty young woman who’s determined to convince her father she can survive on the frontier as well as her Cherokee stepmother.

A Contrary Betrothal will resonate with readers who enjoy stories by authors like Laura Frantz, Shannon McNear, Michelle Griep, and Lori Benton. The forbidden love and fish out of water tropes create plenty of angst, and the battlefield scenes echo Last of the Mohicans. When people have asked me which of my books would translate well onto the big screen, in fact, this is one I think of. My Thoughts:

This story is chock full of suspense and danger, and surprises around every corner. First, we have a fourteen-year-old girl, Ollie, who has witnessed something she should not have. She is a foster kid, and her life is in danger from the mob. I will tell you, these evil men angered me. First off, she is just a kid. I have found lately whether it be books or TV shows, I really feel for the witnesses who did not ask to be there or for the good people who shoulder the blame in not stopping the bad guys in time. I want to comfort them and say this was not your fault and especially tell those who are to blame to take their blame and quit dragging innocent people down. But alas, they don't care nor do they really have a conscious. This mirrors real life unfortunately. This is what I was thinking about with poor Ollie, who has already had a shaky life. Ollie really touched me.

Then we have the doomsday preppers getting involved. This is where survival expert Elena becomes more connected. These are some pretty crazy people. FBI agent Sully has his hands full protecting them both especially when no one knows who the target actually is, Ollie or Elena.

There are a lot of action scenes and intense moments as the recovery ranch that was supposed to keep Ollie safe and help her becomes a major target. Lives are in danger and everyone must step up their game. This is the first in a brand-new series. I expect the next one will be just as hard hitting.
