The 50-year build out of the Habitat Plan will result in the formation of a 47,000-acre Reserve System of protected land, which will help ensure that natural habitats in Santa Clara County remain intact and connected in perpetuity. These lands will offset habitat values lost through land conversion such as development and maintenance of housing, industry, and infrastructure. The Reserve System will be monitored, maintained, and enhanced in perpetuity as functional open space for plants and wildlife, facilitating biological diversity and ecological lift. The Habitat Agency implements and maintains a growing portfolio of restoration projects that enhance sensitive aquatic resources to support species recovery, improve ecological resilience, and provide mitigation for impacts resulting from development and other forms of land conversion.
