The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is an 8-element radio interferometer located atop Maunakea in Hawaii. Operating at frequencies from 180 GHz to 418 GHz, the 6m dishes may be arranged into configurations with baselines as long as 509m, producing a synthesized beam of sub-arcsecond width. Each element can observe with two receivers simultaneously, with 12 GHz bandwidth each per sideband, for a total of 48 GHz processed bandwidth. The digital correlator backend provides a uniform resolution of 140 kHz, across the entired processed bandwdith. The Submillimeter Array is a joint venture of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

2026 June 22: Packaged Air Conditioning Unit Replacement begins

This second major site infrastructure project, to replace our aging cooling system for the correlator and associated digital and analog control, is expected to be completed by late September.

2026 May 19: Summit flywheel project begins

This first major site infrastructure project, to provide resiliency to summit power fluctuations, is expected to be completed by early June. UPDATE June 9: primary project goals complete.

2026 May 16: Semester 2026A On Hold

Science operations paused as two major site infrastructure projects proceed.
