Schoolovision 2021 winners for Ireland

Our pupils were commissioned to write and perform a rap by the Creative Ireland Programme for Cruinniú na nÓg 2020 – which is a national day of free creative activities for children and young people.

We were also Cruinniú na nÓg Ambassadors 2020.

‘We Create Magic’ made its debut on Nationwide on RTÉ 1 and the full video was shown the following day on RTÉ 1 and 2 to celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg, which took place on Saturday June 13th.

Irish Young Filmmaker's Festival in March 2021.

Exciting Day in Cappabue

We had a great day filming with the professionals today.

 

Trip to the Uillinn Arts Centre

Here are a few pics of the fun we had today with the Art in Action project in the Uillinn, West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen. 

Following an application process, we were chosen as the only school in West Cork to take part in an Art in Action project in the centre.

Art in Action is an exciting new upcoming show exhibiting at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre. This project is a meeting of children and artists. Eight visual artists have created work that is interactive and spans different media allowing children to fully participate and get creative.

Such excitement today when we received our LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits, thank you Mr. Swan.

LEGO Mindstorms EV3 is a robotics platform designed to introduce a younger generation to the excitement of building, programming, and playing with robots. We used our new set of iPads to guide us through the building phase.

We were delighted to host West Midlands Childrens Theatre who transported us to lands far away in search of the Bluebird of Happiness.

Winners of Bantry Bay Port Competition

We were thrilled to win first place in the competition with our amazing creation Moby's Sick

As well as receiving a fabulous award we also won a kayaking trip with Bantry Bay Boat Hire for the whole school!!!

Trip to Streamschool, Coomhola

We visited the newly opened Streamschool in Coomhola and were delighted to be one the first groups to enjoy this amazing experience.

We began by visiting the Coomhola River to do some pond dipping.

Some of us got wet.

We had to dry some socks and tights!

We then identified all the minibeasts we had found.

The new centre is amazing with a model of our local rivers, tributaries, moountains and valleys.

We saw the new tanks which hold baby salmon.

Thanks for Stephanie and Mark for an amazing day.

Remembering Rachel

Mary and John Cronin very kindly presented us with a beautiful iron bench on what would have been Rachel's 21st birthday. We are delighted with the very kind gesture, in fact teachers and children jostle for a space on Rachel's bench, especially when the sun is shining.

Our footballers were amazing. They showed fabulous courage and skill in all their games.

We also have the best supporters.

 

Bantry Fire Brigade

We were delighted to welcome Trevor and the fire fighters from Bantry Fire Brigade. They demonstrated how dangerous oil can be when it catches fire and what can happen when water is thrown on burning oil.

 

CRAFTed

 

We are so lucky to be involved in CRAFTed, an initiative supported by the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland. CRAFTed is a nationwide, primary level programme, which supports the delivery of the visual arts curriculum. CRAFTed works with teachers, craftspeople and students. The programme aims to provide all those engage with it with skills for life through positive, collaborative engagement. CRAFTed is a process led programme which focuses on creativity.

The programme supports the wider aims of the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland by placing value on the skills of Irish makers, promoting the insightful and innovative contributions they have to offer to the development of art, craft and design education.

Marika is working with us as we explore the local legend of Céim an Fhia, the leap of the deer. 

 

 

We created our own mythical creatures and wrote in our journals about their super powers.

Moby Sick

 

"Please don't put your litter in the sea, look at what it did to me"

We completed our installation using marine litter to create a project to make people stop and think. We really did stop and think when we realised that so much litter was ending up in our seas, especially single use plastic items such as plastic water bottles, wrappers, and refuse sacks. Dan, a true friend of our school, found a huge buoy washed up on the beach. He cut out the 'ribs' and then we got to work on the rest of our whale. Jessica Mason, a Heritage in School expert, taught us so much about the environmental impact of plastic as we were working on Moby. 

We decided to get a filtered water system into the school and with Jessica's help we ordered stainless steel bottles in an effort to cut down on single use plastic in our school. This is the start of a very exciting journey as Jessica will be facilitating workshops on the following:

• Waste and Resource Use
• Up-cycling and recycling crafts
• Art from Waste 
• Energy and Climate Change
• Food miles and transport
• Nature walks and Biodiversity
• School Gardens
• Good for me good for the planet - Healthy food and the environment

 

 

 

Winners at Fresh Film Festival 2019

Staff and pupils are celebrating after winning a major award at the Fresh Film Festival 2019 in Limerick.

The school was the junior winner of the 2019 Radharc Award for Heritage and Documentary by Young Filmmakers in Ireland.

Our entry “A Blast From The Past” featured parents and grandparents recounting their childhood experiences while pupils recreated these stories through their own drawings and pictures.

Our film was the only entry from a primary school in Cork selected for screening at the awards.

The judges praised the film for “engaging stories of adult memory and nostalgia illustrated with creative drawings by young students”.

The award was then presented by TV and film personality Pat Shortt to the ecstatic pupils and staff of Cappabue NS

This film is the latest in a long line of movie productions from the school which have won multiple awards both nationally and internationally.

 

Norma Healy, principal, commended the parents, grandparents, staff and friends of the school for their input, encouragement and support in bringing this latest production to fruition. She thanked particularly Victor Hayes from Bantry and Dunmanway School Completion Programme for his role in mentoring and inspiring the pupils in the school.

 

The film captures, in a unique and authentic way, the life experiences of past generations, portraying moments of sentimentality, poignancy and hilarity in equal measures. She added that filmmaking brings learning to life as it embraces so many elements of the learning process engaged in on a daily basis in the school.

Enrolment Cappabue N.S.

We are very proud of our vibrant and energetic school. As a two teacher schooll, we have a very favourable pupil teacher ratio ensuring that all children benefit from individual attention in a friendly, family style atmosphere. We have a shared Special Education Teacher as well as a variety of visiting expert teachers who undertake the following: Drama, Art and Craft, Tin Whistle, French, GAA Coaching, I.T. Tutoring, Science and Exploration of our Local Environment, Yoga.

We are a Digital School of Excellence and are very lucky to be involved in a 3 year STEM LEGO Robotics Initiative with support from U.C.C. and funding from Department of Education and Skills. We have a laptop for each child. Film making is an integral part of our year in Cappabue and we have won many national awards. Our latest film "A Blast From The Past" has been selected for screening at Fresh Film Festival.

 

 

 

Engineers Week 

John Horgan kindly facilitated a workshop where we learned about hydraulics and how cranes work. We constructed our own hydraulic cranes using timber, syringes and plastic tubing. Water was used as hydraulic fluid and the energy from our hands while injecting the syringes powered the cranes.

 

 

 

Matt Climbs Carrauntoohil

A pupil in 2nd class climbed Carrauntoohil last summer to raise funds for cancer research. Matt lost his dad Inaki to cancer and he raised €3,000. Below is a link to a video showing his amazing achievement.

Trip to Snave

We visited Snave to collect marine litter as part of our involvement in a competition. Bantry Bay Port Company has teamed up with MaREI, the UCC research centre for marine and renewable energy based in Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork, to deliver an educational initiative around marine litter.

 

 

 

 

Bee-Bot Maze

We made a maze and programmed the Bee-Bot to travel around the maze without bumping into any walls.

Snow days...happy days!

Cooking All Stars

We have begun our set of lessons as part of our involvement in Cooking All Stars. Each week we have been learning a new skill including whisking, cutting and flipping. We have also been researching different types of food including eggs, aubergines, cheese and granola. 

We received an amazing set of cooking utensils including two hobs which have been so useful.

Cooking can be tough work!

We have great fun too!

Tasting is also very important.

Christmas Raffle

We are very grateful to everyone who donated wonderful prizes for our annual Christmas raffle.

The raffle will take place in the school on Tuesday 18th December after the play.

Our team did so well in the quiz this year. Well done!

 

Science workshop with Mr. D

We were delighted to welcome Mr. Chuck del Piere back to our school. His workshop was based on sound and light. We discovered how pirates used scientific knowledge to gain the advantage while stealing treasure!!!

We explored reflections, refractions and magnification.

We saw how insects view the world.

Sound is a vibration or wave that travels through solids or liquids and can be heard. 

We built and tested bridges...using a single sheet of paper.

We tested the bridges by placing one cent coins on them.

Robots are rapidly transforming the way we live and work, and will have even more revolutionary impact in the years ahead. In this exciting  programme, the children will learn the mathematical concepts and the  tools needed to design, build and program robots.

Cooking All Stars Programme

Cappabue N.S. was selected as one of the schools to partake in the Cooking All Stars Pilot Programme. We are looking forward to cooking some exciting recipes. As part of our involvement in this initiative we will receive cooking equipment and professional input.

Mathletics

Mathletics is an innovative interactive programme that we have recently introduced in Cappabue. 

Mathletics:

• contains fully aligned curriculum content
• makes differentiation easy with personalised learning
• can play a key role in encouraging a 'growth mindset' in Maths

 

 

 

Trip to RNLI Baltimore

We were so delighted to visit the RNLI centre in Baltimore on Wednesday 12th September. The sun shone for us as we explored the life boat and the centre.

 Declan very kindly and patiently explained what all the little symbols on the map meant.

We had a lot of questions!!!

The suits are always ready for the volunteers so they can put to sea quickly.

A new inshore boat was being delivered to the centre. They were getting ready to install it on the ramp.

 

Cathal and Martin showed us around the all weather lifeboat.

We got to sit in the coxswain's chair. The coxswain is the captain and is in charge of the rescue operations.

We were allowed to wear the earphones and speak through the microphone. I think some of us could be heard in Cappabue.

We were so inspired by the volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

Rachel's Award 2018

Rachel's award was presented to a very worthy recipient in 5th class. Rachel's mum Mary was delighted to present the perpetual award. She also brought amazing treats for all the children. Rachel is so fondly remembered in Cappabue.

Visit to Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre

The exhibition we viewed was called Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger. It is an exhibition of artwork from Quinnipiac University, Connecticut, USA. Charlotte showed us the amazing paintings and sculptures.

Charlotte brought us around and we looked at the wonderful paintings and discussed them.

Following our tour of the exhibition we had a very inspiring workshop where we created boats using fabric and card. Charlotte was very impressed with the creativity shown by our amazing pupils.

THREE rural primary schools in West Cork are to receive up to €20,000 in funding which will see their junior classes learn coding and older children build their own robots.

CAPPABUE N.S. IS ONE OF THESE SCHOOLS

The School Excellence (Digital) Fund will support clusters of school working together on specific projects to demonstrate the innovative use of digital technologies in teaching, learning and assessment. It is designed to encourage and recognise excellence and to ensure that innovation in schools is supported and rewarded.
