When the Autumn Wind Passes

When the Autumn Wind Passes
By William He

Listen to the wind pass,
It does not stir the window’s corner, but breathes faintly.
Take the dusk,
And knead it into broken wisps,
Scattering them toward the seaside, for some appointed hour.
Where the eyes are lowered,
Dark clouds surge upward,
And every inch of the heart unravels into,
A thousand threads of drifting traces.
How much desolation,
How many cycles of struggle,
Until heaven and earth suddenly enter the slanting sunset glow.
Just as I am dazed,
My spirit returns to a secluded room,
And who will pursue the regret that lingers.
Alone I grope,
Through a hundred layers of tear-stains,
And at the broken place, return is hard.

I remember those years,
The lonely orchid glistens with teardrops of dew,
All of them becoming the sorrow of today.
Let the cup before me,
Be brimming with jade-like wine,
How could it wash away,
The sorrowful threshold of the old years.
The tangled thoughts slowly sink,
The roots of the ears gradually grow still,
But alas, the foolish dream recedes like mist and smoke.
Clearly it is,
A demonic obstacle carried over from a former life,
Striking me again, again, and again.
Let it all scatter,
Speaking not a word to one another,
Swallowing the last of the chill.

About this poem

The autumn wind as an insidious catalyst for introspection. The poem transforms landscape into psychological weather: faint wind, broken dusk, surging clouds, and slanting sunset become extensions of the speaker’s inner world. Its movement from intimate sorrow toward “heaven and earth” gives the lyric a quietly expansive dimension. The second stanza introduces historical shadows through “withered beacon fires” and “blood-dark rain,” while jade-like wine evokes the classical tradition of attempting to dissolve grief through intoxication. Particularly striking is the surreal image of “the roots of the ears gradually grow still,” suggesting the gradual silencing of memory and sensation.

In this highly introspective poem, you’ve painted a mental landscape imagining via the movement of the metaphorical autumn wind, the mind’s seasonal, even annual interior transformation and, along with it over time, both some loss; and even some retained memories.
Thus, this poem evokes both a sense of external physical and internal psychological ‘weather’ where the wind symbolizes the speaker’s inner world, incorporating surreal imagery by employing ‘earthy’ mixed metaphors such as the grounded ‘roots of ears’ like the grounded roots of an ancient oak tree, gradually growing still; suggesting the gradual silencing of memory and even bodily sensations; recalling for some readers such as myself, now a nonagenarian, Shakespeare’s classic poem, “As You Like It,” depicting the seven stages of human life, with the sixth and next-to-final stage portrayed as the stage of Old Age (the Pantaloon Stage); with the aging man now “lean and slippered, with spectacles on nose, and pouch on side,” physically weakened, voice (In camera, I’m hoping, William, that my baritone voice is helping to delay that outcome); turning to a childish treble, now dependent on others.
A masterful job. Quite a read!

    记当年、
    幽兰泣露,
    尽作今日伤悲。
The perishable orchid cries of yore. The flower is the fragile thing and everything like this cannot stay, just like Frost's 'Nothing gold can stay.'

    分明是、
    前身魔障,
    几度叩灵扉。
It seems the karma from the previous life acts now, and the dead seem to knock on the door as if back to life. This creates the quaint and supernatural feeling of autumn.

    任尊前、
    激光四射,
    怎去得、
    旧岁低眉。
The son et lumiere before a cask of wine makes the liquor no more appealing, with musings about the last year in lowered brow that signifies unrelenting grief. It feels vague but seems to permeate through time. The passage of time, that comes to mind at the sight of autumn, feels poignant.

    I remember those years,
Of withered beacon fires and blood-dark rain,
All of them becoming the sorrow of today.

It seems that there was violence. Probably there was a hard time, and it causes sorrow.
