Portland is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Oregon. Located in the Pacific Northwest at the confluence of the Willamette River and the Columbia River, it had a population of 652,503 at the 2020 census. The area was inhabited by Chinookan peoples before European American settlers arrived in the 1840s, and the city was named after Portland, Maine, following a coin toss. Portland became a port and lumber center during the 19th century, and the region's economic activity includes shipping, transportation, technology and sporting-goods manufacture. Nicknamed the "City of Roses", it is known for its parks, environmentalism and music scene. This photograph, taken in 1898, shows Downtown Portland with the Willamette River in the foreground and the West Hills in the background.
