Summary

  • reject self-update API URLs that do not use HTTPS before version lookup or token resolution
  • prevent the blocking updater from following HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects
  • document and test the HTTPS requirement

Follow-up to the security review on #12735.

Testing

  • mise run test:unit -- cli::version
  • mise run lint
  • mise exec -- cargo check --no-default-features --features native-tls,vfox/vendored-lua

AI-assisted β€” Tool: Codex; model: unavailable/unavailable; version: unavailable.

Note

High Risk
Changes authentication and download paths for the running mise binary (self-update and Windows shim refresh); misconfigured mirrors or unusual redirect chains could break updates until fixed.

Overview
Hardens mise self-update so release metadata and binaries cannot be pulled over insecure channels or via redirects that drop TLS.

self_update.api_url must be HTTPS β€” SelfUpdateSource::validate() rejects http:// before any update or latest-version lookup (invalid config is skipped quietly for version checks). Docs and settings.toml now state this explicitly for mirrors and GitHub Enterprise.

Update HTTP clients use https_only and a shared HTTPS→HTTP redirect block (is_https_downgrade in http.rs). The blocking self_update crate client and the Windows mise-shim download path get this policy; shim downloads now hit the GitHub API asset URL with auth headers instead of the generic downloader and browser download URL.

Remote version fetch (ClientKind::Fetch) applies the same redirect rule so version/tag enumeration cannot be redirected to plain HTTP.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Self-updates now require an HTTPS API URL.
    • Update downloads, including Windows shim updates, no longer follow redirects that downgrade from HTTPS to an insecure connection.
    • Invalid update sources are rejected before downloads begin.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that mirrored release archives must use HTTPS, retain official filenames, and preserve embedded signatures.
    • Updated configuration guidance to identify the API URL as HTTPS-only.

Walkthrough

Self-update configuration and documentation now require HTTPS. SelfUpdateSource validates API URLs before version lookup and update paths. Main and shim downloads use clients that reject HTTPS-to-insecure redirects. Tests cover HTTPS acceptance and HTTP rejection.

Self-update now enforces HTTPS sources and blocks insecure redirects, but a large Windows shim response can exhaust memory because it is fully buffered before being written. Stream the download with a size limit before merging.

Greptile Summary

The PR requires HTTPS release sources and applies HTTPS-only, downgrade-rejecting clients to the blocking updater and Windows shim archive download.

  • Validates the configured self-update API URL before release lookup and token resolution.
  • Uses the authenticated GitHub API asset endpoint for Windows shim downloads.
  • Adds redirect protections for remote version fetches and documents the HTTPS requirement.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge.

No blocking failure remains; the current code addresses each previously reported insecure initial URL or redirect path.

Important Files Changed

Filename Overview
src/cli/self_update.rs The previously reported blocking and Windows shim transport gaps are addressed with source validation, HTTPS-only clients, and downgrade-rejecting redirect handling.
src/cli/version.rs Self-update sources now reject non-HTTPS API URLs before latest-version lookup, with focused validation coverage.
src/http.rs Remote version fetch redirects now reject adjacent HTTPS-to-insecure transitions while preserving reqwest's default redirect limit.
settings.toml The generated setting description now identifies the self-update API base URL as HTTPS-only.
docs/installing-mise.md Mirror documentation now states that the configured API URL must use HTTPS.

Verification did not complete.

Use one HTTPS-only transport policy for every self-update request.

The current changes validate the configured API URL and protect one blocking client. They do not prove HTTPS enforcement for initial asset URLs, version lookup, or the Windows shim download.

  • src/cli/self_update.rs#L556-L568: confirm that initial asset URLs are HTTPS before the request starts.
  • src/cli/version.rs#L370-L373: confirm that version lookup rejects HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects.
  • src/cli/self_update.rs#L598-L598: apply the same policy to the Windows shim asset download.

Reject HTTP redirects for release metadata.

get_release_for_url_with_versions_host uses HTTP_FETCH, whose default client follows redirects. An HTTPS API can therefore redirect the Windows shim metadata request to HTTP. Apply the HTTPS-only redirect policy to this request and add a regression test.
