feat(packslip): check declared host requirements before install - #12804
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughPackslip adds cross-platform host requirement checks before artifact download. It also adds authenticated release validation, trust settings, signer metadata, shared pin tracking, supplemental file retrieval, and installation cleanup. ChangesPackslip installation controls
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Host-requirement enforcement may reject valid Windows installations, while signed requirement metadata can direct command probes through path-bearing names. Both issues are bounded and bypassable, but should be corrected or explicitly accepted before release. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Greptile SummaryAdds pre-download validation of Packslip artifact host requirements.
Confidence Score: 5/5The PR appears safe to merge; no outstanding correctness, security, or repository-rule issue was identified. The previous Linux kernel-release parsing finding was fixed and its thread is resolved. The subsequent command-resolution and process-cleanup changes align with their platform contracts, and no new actionable failure remains. Important Files Changed

Version parser drops v-prefixed output
Low Severity
version_from_output accepts only tokens that are purely dotted digits after stripping quotes and brackets. A leading v is left in place, so common --version output such as v20.11.0 does not parse. The command then falls through to an unknown-check warning and never reports that it is older than bin.min.

| On Linux the OS version is the kernel release from `uname -r`, read up to the distribution's suffix: `6.8.0-31-generic` is compared as `6.8.0`. OS and glibc probes and command version probes have bounded execution and output. Linux library checks use `LD_LIBRARY_PATH`, standard directories, and `ldconfig -p`; Windows uses PATH and the system directory. macOS checks common library directories but reports unknown absence because the dyld shared cache can contain libraries with no filesystem entry. | ||

Move the resource-generator limits out of the "Host requirements" section.
This paragraph describes resource generators, not requirement probes. Under this heading, a reader applies the 4 MiB output limit to the requirement probes. The requirement probes cap output at 64 KiB in src/packslip_requirements.rs. Place this paragraph in "Resource selection and command execution", which already states the five-second timeout at Line 178.

Validate bin.name as a plain file name before resolving and executing it.
file::which joins each PATH entry with bin.name. An absolute name can discard the PATH entry, and ../ components can escape it. The resulting path reaches CmdLineRunner::new(path).arg("--version"). Reject names that fail file::is_plain_file_name before resolution.

`uname -r` reports a release, not a version: `6.8.0-31-generic`, or `6.6.87.2-microsoft-standard-WSL2`. `version_from_output` accepts only tokens whose every dot-separated part is digits, so on Linux the probe returned nothing and a declared `os_min` warned as unknown rather than refusing a host below it — the one case the check exists for. Read the dotted numbers off the front of the release instead and stop at the distribution's suffix, which is not ours to interpret. macOS reports a bare `15.5` and takes the same path; Windows keeps the word-by-word read, since `ver` prints a sentence. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The requirement check runs each declared command with `--version`, so the path it picks has to be spawnable, and neither lookup guaranteed that. `which_bin` answers for `mise which` and shim dispatch, where a shebang-only script or a `.ps1` is a fine answer; here it is a path the probe cannot start. `which_bin_spawnable` exists for exactly this and is what the check now uses. On the ambient side, `file::which` matches the bare name, so a Windows host's `git.exe` or `node.cmd` read as missing and a declared command warned as absent; `which_spawnable` applies PATHEXT. Linux library cache probe truncated
High Severity
The ldconfig -p probe goes through read_isolated with a 64 KiB cap. A typical Linux linker cache is larger, so the probe errors and library_present treats the result as unknown. Missing libraries then warn instead of refusing the install, which is the failure this check is meant to catch.

Report unknown instead of absent when the Windows search is incomplete.
This branch returns Some(false) for any library that is not in PATH or %SystemRoot%\System32. check turns Some(false) into a fatal failure at Line 214. Windows loader resolution also covers SysWOW64 for 32-bit modules, WinSxS side-by-side assemblies, and KnownDLLs, so a present library can read as absent and refuse a valid install. The macOS branch already returns None for the same reason.
Consider returning None when the directory scan finds nothing, so the result is a warning rather than a refusal.

Linux library checks use the linker cache/search paths; macOS reports unknown absence when the dyld cache prevents a reliable answer. Requirements never resolve an artifact-selection tie.
