Users can declare "nix:ripgrep" = "latest" in [bootstrap.packages] and apply it through their normal Nix profile. The built-in manager supports use, apply, status JSON, and targeted upgrades, including top-level bootstrap. It preserves unrelated packages and leaves Nix sources, caches, trust, and profile rollback under Nix control.

Adds packages use --no-install for all managers and packages export --format nix to generate a deterministic NixOS module using the importing configuration’s pkgs. Export respects merged configuration and selectors, requires no Nix executable, and rejects explicit sources, version pins, and invalid attributes before emitting output. Documentation covers profile installation and module import/rebuild workflows.

Validation

  • Six focused Rust tests passed for parsing, matching, profile format, escaping, and export validation.
  • TEST_ALL=1 mise run test:e2e e2e/cli/test_system_nix e2e/cli/test_system_use e2e/cli/test_system_nix_docker_slow passed.
  • mise exec -- cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings, mise run lint-fix, and scoped hk check --safe passed.
  • Regenerated usage documentation and completions with mise run render:usage and mise run render:completions.

The Docker test ran this PR’s debug binary in nixos/nix:2.35.2@sha256:617d914dba5384bf75adf17081583b69371031ec7defce36c34c5fa14fc819b0 on x86_64 Linux. Only the test copy’s dynamic loader and library path were adapted for the container.

Verified installation, repeated apply without a new generation, registry shorthand, status JSON with store identity, and preservation of unrelated profile entries. A local flake with two Git revisions verified targeted upgrades and revision-pinned packages remaining pinned. Missing-source status and fresh default/XDG profiles verified read-only behavior; a failed install preserved the current generation.

The exported module was evaluated through the real NixOS module evaluator using the image’s pinned nixpkgs tree. Its selected hello and jq packages were built and executed; declaration removal, an empty manifest, and an invalid attribute were checked. This covers package operations and module consumption; it does not validate boot or system activation. Native operations were tested on Nix 2.35.2; macOS and older supported Nix releases were not exercised.

Note

Medium Risk
New code executes the Nix CLI and mutates user profiles; export output is meant for NixOS evaluation, so incorrect attributes could break downstream configs despite validation and tests.

Overview
Adds Nix as a bootstrap package manager so [bootstrap.packages] entries like "nix:ripgrep" = "latest" can be applied, checked, and upgraded via the user’s nix profile (modern profile JSON, flakes/nix-command required). Status matches by flake source and attribute path; version pins, prune/absent removal, and unrelated profile entries are handled with the constraints documented in the new Nix guide.

Also adds mise bootstrap packages use --no-install (all managers) to record declarations without touching package managers, and mise bootstrap packages export --format nix, a read-only command that emits a environment.systemPackages NixOS module from merged shorthand nix: entries only—rejecting explicit flake refs, version pins, and unsafe attributes before printing. CLI usage, man pages, site docs, e2e tests, and a Docker-based integration fixture cover export, --no-install, and real profile workflows.

The new export command may expose an incorrect generated documentation source link, which can misdirect users seeking its implementation or reference. This is a bounded documentation issue but should be corrected before or shortly after merge.

The PR appears safe to merge; the previously missing command-effect classification is now present and no new actionable issue was found in the follow-up changes.

Summary

  • Supports Nix profile installation, status reporting, and targeted upgrades while preserving unrelated profile entries.
  • Adds bootstrap packages export --format nix and manager-independent packages use --no-install.
  • Validates Nix references and exported attributes, rejecting unsupported sources, expressions, and version pins.
  • Adds unit, end-to-end, and Docker-based integration coverage plus generated CLI documentation.
  • Registers the export command as read-only in the centralized command-effect metadata.

Add a source-link mapping for bootstrap/packages/export.

The new command falls through to bootstrap.rs. Its generated source link should point to src/cli/system/export.rs.
