Summary

Trial complete lockfile generation behind lockfile_mode = "generate" / MISE_LOCKFILE_MODE=generate. The unset default remains merge; selecting an engine does not enable automatic lockfile creation or change formats.

This addresses the broader cause of cross-platform churn in Discussion #13018: host-scoped incremental updates can discard another platform's option variant before auto-locking recreates it. The generator starts from current requests and uses previous files as immutable inputs for pinned versions, target platforms, reusable artifact metadata, and provenance baselines.

Implementation

  • Collect configuration, task, and monorepo requests with their ownership and bindings. Regenerate selected scope and carry untouched filtered scope forward.
  • Prepare foreign-platform metadata while tools install, reserve bounded worker capacity for installation, share invocation downloads and common verification results, and report progress under lock.
  • Reconcile actual installed metadata, including source fallback, before publication. Reuse unchanged artifacts and avoid rewriting identical files.
  • Stage affected writes, check for concurrent edits, and preserve previous lockfiles on required resolution, verification, or installation failure. Completed installations remain available. Unsupported targets are distinct from genuine failures.
  • Retire provenance_verified as a trust signal in both modes. Preserve existing values as inert metadata for unchanged artifacts; new provenance is cryptographically verified for each target, including additional artifacts. Keep checksum checks and provenance policy enforcement.
  • Recommend the trial near the beginning of the lockfile guide and generate the setting schema/documentation.
  • Add a package-version build gate at 2026.12.0. The first December release requires reviewing feedback and explicitly promoting generation or postponing the gate; no wall-clock default switch.

Validation

  • 153 focused lockfile/release-gate unit tests, including Erlang's Linux/macOS option split, reuse, filters, unsupported targets, source fallback, legacy metadata, downgrade protection, and settings validation.
  • Controlled HTTP overlap/reuse test and end-to-end coverage for creation eligibility, mode switching, concurrent edits, cancellation, monorepos, task tools, and platform options.
  • Cross-platform SOPS provenance verification and repeated-run determinism.
  • Release-gate tests before, at, and after the December threshold.
  • All-features build; workspace/all-features/all-targets Clippy with warnings denied; scoped hk formatting/checks; schema validation; documentation build.

Note

High Risk
Changes lockfile trust semantics, install/lock orchestration, and atomic publication paths across backends—security-sensitive provenance handling with broad behavioral impact when generate is enabled.

Overview
Adds lockfile_mode = "generate" (via settings or MISE_LOCKFILE_MODE) as a trial alternative to incremental merge. In generate mode, mise lock and eligible mise install runs rebuild lockfiles from current config/task requests while treating the previous file as an immutable baseline—reusing unchanged artifacts, carrying forward filtered scope, and publishing through staged atomic writes with snapshot rechecks so failures or concurrent edits do not overwrite good lockfiles.

Provenance and backends now record only cryptographically verified provenance per target platform (including cross-platform lock resolution); failed lock-time verification fails the command instead of deferring. provenance_verified is no longer a trust signal (preserved only as legacy metadata on unchanged entries). Aqua/GitHub/Python lock paths gain per-target verification, stricter checksum handling, and UnsupportedTarget semantics that generate mode treats differently from hard failures. HTTP deduplicates downloads and attestation checks within a command when generating.

Install/upgrade can trigger background lock preparation during install, skip legacy monorepo migration in generate mode, and run Lock::generate_after_install when lockfiles are enabled. A build-time release gate (build/lockfile_rollout.rs) forces an explicit maintainer decision before shipping 2026.12.0. Docs, schema, and e2e tests cover mode switching, overlap, monorepos, and concurrent edits.

Opt-in complete lockfile generation now preserves artifact trust baselines across reordered URLs, but generation may still fail for some requested platform/tool combinations or releases without provenance attestations. These compatibility paths should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.

Greptile Summary

This PR adds opt-in complete lockfile generation while retaining incremental merge behavior as the default.

  • Collects configuration, task, and monorepo requests for deterministic multi-platform generation.
  • Stages publication and checks input snapshots to avoid overwriting concurrent edits.
  • Verifies newly recorded provenance for each target and reuses unchanged artifact metadata.
  • Adds settings, schema, documentation, focused end-to-end coverage, and a release-version decision gate.
  • The latest revision improves additional-artifact downgrade checks across reordering and version upgrades.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge, with no outstanding actionable findings.

No new correctness, security, or repository-rule violations remain. The previous provenance finding was resolved after jdx documented the intentional trust-model change and Greptile withdrew the concern.

Source fallback blocked by provenance check

Medium Severity

Installed source-fallback metadata is selected, then ensure_no_downgrade still compares it to the previous binary entry. Missing provenance on the source install is treated as a downgrade, so generation fails and the lockfile is not published after a successful source install.

The rejection is intentional when fallback would remove recorded provenance: the approved plan requires both reconciling actual source fallback and preserving downgrade protection. Source fallback without a prior provenance commitment is reconciled and covered by actual_source_fallback_wins_over_reusable_binary_metadata. A fallback that loses a previous provenance/signing commitment must preserve the old lockfile and return an error; the completed installation remains on disk. Automatically exempting source fallback here would silently weaken the required policy.

460-471: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Match additional artifacts by URL instead of by list index.

This loop pairs old and new additional artifacts by position. preserve_legacy_metadata at line 576 pairs the same artifacts by URL. If a user reorders additional_asset_patterns in config, the index pairing compares unrelated artifacts and can raise a spurious "would downgrade additional artifact provenance" error that blocks generation.

Match by URL so artifact identity is consistent across both functions.

Addressed the valid review findings in 3d32a6e:

  • Fresh and reused lock resolutions now use the same stored backend identity, including backends with bracketed options.
  • All captured configuration and lockfile inputs are rechecked after acquiring transaction locks and again immediately before publication. This includes version-bump configurations and legacy migration inputs, not just staged outputs.
  • Added regressions for identity consistency and edits between the initial snapshot check and publication; made generator tests initialize their backend state explicitly so they pass in isolation.

The legacy provenance flag remains inert as explicitly requested (Greptile has acknowledged and withdrawn that concern). Source fallback remains subject to existing provenance/signer downgrade protection: successful installs stay on disk, but a policy downgrade does not publish a new lockfile.

Validation: focused lockfile tests, isolated generator tests, snapshot recheck regression, and scoped formatting/checks passed. Continuing to follow CI and reviews on the new head.

Addressed the additional-artifact ordering note from review 5159198075 in e5fecff. Unchanged artifact URLs now retain their own provenance baseline regardless of list order. Unmatched replacement URLs are paired in configured order, preserving the existing upgrade policy rather than rejecting every versioned URL change. Regression coverage exercises reordering, a valid replacement URL, provenance loss, and removal of a verified artifact. Both focused tests, formatting, and workspace/all-features/all-targets Clippy pass.

The explicit-pattern and missing-attestation failures noted in the summary remain intentional policy decisions, as explained in the corresponding resolved threads.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

The performance gate did not measure this revision: its build failed downloading futures-executor because the runner could not resolve static.crates.io. This is a dependency-download/DNS failure, not an observed instruction-count regression. I reran the failed jobs in https://github.com/jdx/mise/actions/runs/34403082694. All build, unit, e2e, lint, and documentation checks on e5fecff are green; the performance measurement remains pending.
