eligible plugins concurrently with a bounded concurrency limit instead of
awaiting each backend serially. Preserve plugin-order result merging so existing
filtering, search, completion, and no-argument selector output remain unchanged,
including cache behavior and timeout handling.

- Around line 84-88: Update the hook eligibility logic around
backend_search_query so prefixed searches exclude unrelated plugins from both
list and search hooks. Apply the prefix filter before computing has_list,
ensuring a plugin is enabled only when it matches the requested search scope,

Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

What this enables
Tools provided by installed vfox backend plugins now show up where users look for tools:
The same results are available to shell completion. Running
mise usewith no arguments also includes tools from plugins that publish a finite catalog. This supports two different ecosystem shapes:
BackendListToolsonce and return every tool it provides.BackendSearchTools. Mise passes the user's current query to the plugin, so typingmise search eslintor completingmise use npm:esl…searches for matching packages without downloading or enumerating all of npm. Results are namespaced as
<plugin>:<tool>, so they can be selected and installed without colliding with mise's built-in registry.mise registryremains registry-only.Behavior and resilience
mise search <query>merges matching registry entries with results from installed plugins.npm:eslintis routed only to that plugin and is passed to it aseslint. This closes the implementation gap discussed in #13109.
Plugin API
Adds two optional vfox backend hooks:
BackendListTools(ctx)for bounded catalogsBackendSearchTools({ query })for query-driven discoveryBoth return tool names with optional descriptions. Existing plugins remain compatible and do not need to implement either hook.

New Features
mise searchnow includes tools from installed backend catalogs alongside registry tools.mise useselection includes tools from the unified catalog.Documentation
Note
Medium Risk
Discovery runs optional Lua hooks across installed backend plugins with caching and concurrency; failures are swallowed but wrong or slow plugin behavior could affect search, completion, and interactive
mise use.Overview
mise searchand tool picking now include installed vfox backend plugins, not only the built-in registry. Tools appear asplugin:tool(for examplecatalog_plugin:formatter) and can be installed with the same id you see in search.Plugins can expose tools in two optional ways:
BackendListToolsfor a small fixed catalog, andBackendSearchToolsfor query-driven lookup (suited to large ecosystems). A prefixed query likenpm:eslintis sent only to that plugin. List and search results are cached separately, with stale cache used on timeout; invalid tool names from plugins are dropped.Shell completion for tools and
tool@prefixes now comes frommise search --complete/--complete-idsinstead ofmise registry. Interactivemise use(no tool argument) uses the same unified catalog.mise registrystays registry-only.Contributor docs add optional hook files and examples;
