Problem

A lockfile entry carries a version field and a per-platform url, and nothing
compares them. The install directory, the version mise prints, mise ls and
every later mise exec all read version; the bytes come from url. When the
two disagree, mise installs one release under another release's name and reports
success.

This is not hypothetical. jdx/fnox's mise.lock on main recorded:

[[tools.hk]]
version = "2.0.1"
backend = "aqua:jdx/hk"

[tools.hk."platforms.linux-x64"]
url = "https://github.com/jdx/hk/releases/download/v1.56.1/hk-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.tar.gz"

CI reported hk@2.0.1 installed on every run while actually running hk 1.56.1.
That hid a genuine incompatibility — the repo's hk.pkl still uses the hk v1
config schema, which hk 2 rejects — for four days, until the lockfile was
regenerated for an unrelated reason. jdx/communique still carries the same
entry today.

Two things produce such an entry:

  1. An external rewrite of the version line. Renovate's mise manager bumps
the version in mise.lock as a one-line text edit and does not touch the
platform blocks. The fnox commit above is literally mise.lock | 2 +-.
  2. A release that drops a platform. If the recorded version has no artifact
for a platform, mise lock reports that target as skipped and leaves the
previous block in place, still pointing at the older release it resolved
against. aube 2.2.17 publishes no x86_64-apple-darwin CLI archive, so
fnox, pitchfork and usage all hold a macos-x64 entry from 2.0.1 or
    2.2.12 under version = "2.2.17".

Neither mise install nor mise install --locked notices, and neither repairs
the entry, so the wrong version persists across every later run.

Change

mise install now fails when the locked download URL for the platform being
installed provably names a different release than the entry's version:

$ mise install --locked
mise ✗ hk@latest 0ms · failed: hk@2.0.1 is locked to a download URL from 1.56.1:
Error:
0: Failed to install hk@latest: hk@2.0.1 is locked to a download URL from 1.56.1:
        https://github.com/jdx/hk/releases/download/v1.56.1/hk-x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.tar.gz
Installing it would put 1.56.1 on disk under the name 2.0.1. Either the
`version` field was rewritten without refreshing the
`[tools.hk."platforms.linux-x64"]` block, or a later release dropped
linux-x64 and left the old block behind. Run `mise lock` to regenerate the
entry; if it reports the entry as skipped and leaves it unchanged, 2.0.1
      has no linux-x64 artifact.

The check runs before anything is downloaded, only for tool versions that came
from a lockfile, and only for the platform actually being installed — a stale
macos-x64 block does not fail a Linux install, because that machine installs
the right bytes.

mise lock is unaffected, so the documented repair still works on a broken
lockfile.

Detection

The comparison only reports a contradiction it can prove, because rejecting a
valid locked install would be worse than missing an invalid one. It reads just
the two positions in a URL that identify a release:

  • the release tag of a forge download URL — /releases/download/<tag>/,
    /releases/<tag>/downloads/, /-/archive/<tag>/
  • the artifact file name

A dotted number anywhere else in the path is part of the route, not the release,
and is ignored: https://mirror.example/api/1.0/tool-linux.tar.gz installs fine
under version 2.0.0, as do a numbered CDN bucket, a date directory and a distro
pool path. Version components are compared numerically, so a zero-padded tag
(1.02.0) matches 1.2.0, while 1.2.3 still refuses a 1.2.30 artifact.

It also stays quiet when the entry version is not a dotted number (latest, a
ref, a bare date), when neither position carries one (many assets are named only
by platform), and when a tag decorates the version rather than replacing it —
cli-v2026.8.0, go1.23.4.linux-amd64.tar.gz, cpython-3.14.7+20260901-… under
a 20260901 tag, jdk-21.0.4%2B7 for temurin-21.0.4+7. The host is never read.

I ran the rule over the current mise.lock on the default branch of 13
repositories (mise, hk, usage, xx, demand, aube, communique, fnox,
mr-boxington, packslip, pitchfork, pklr, tak): 918 platform rows, 9 flagged,
and all 9 are the real mismatches described above
— 6 for communique's hk
and 3 for aube on macos-x64. No false positives.

Not covered

An already-installed tool is not re-checked, because mise does not re-install it.
The check prevents the bad state from being created, and mise lock plus a
reinstall clears an existing one.

Validation

  • New table-driven unit tests for the comparison: the real mismatches, the URL
shapes that must be accepted, the route-number shapes that must not fire, the
numeric component comparison, and the cases where there is nothing to compare.
  • New e2e test lockfile/test_lockfile_version_url_mismatch: a shfmt entry
claiming 3.10.0 with a 3.7.0 URL fails mise install and mise install --locked, nothing is written to the install directory, mise lock still
repairs the entry, and the repaired entry installs v3.10.0.
  • Reproduced the original bug on main before the change: with the fnox entry
above, mise install --locked printed ✓ hk@2.0.1 and mise exec -- hk --version printed hk 1.56.1. After the change the install fails, and after
mise lock it installs hk 2.0.1.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings clean,
cargo fmt --all applied, unit tests and the e2e/lockfile suite pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

A lockfile entry carries a `version` field and a per-platform `url`, and
nothing compared them. The install directory, the version mise prints,
`mise ls` and every later `mise exec` read `version`; the bytes come from
`url`. When the two disagreed, mise installed one release under another's
name and reported success, and neither `mise install` nor `mise install
--locked` repaired the entry, so it survived every later run.

Two things produce such an entry: an external rewrite of the `version`
line that leaves the platform blocks alone (Renovate's mise manager does
exactly this), and a release that drops a platform, which `mise lock`
reports as skipped while leaving the older block in place.

Fail before downloading instead, when the locked URL for the platform
being installed provably names a different release. The comparison only
reports a contradiction it can prove: it needs a dotted number in both
the URL path and the entry version, and stays quiet otherwise. Over the
current lockfiles of 13 repositories it flagged 9 of 918 platform rows,
all of them real mismatches.

The PR appears safe to merge; no outstanding correctness or repository-rule violations remain.

Summary

Adds install-time validation that rejects lockfile platform URLs which provably identify a release different from the locked version.

  • Extracts release identifiers conservatively from forge release tags and artifact filenames.
  • Runs the validation before installation for versions resolved from the lockfile and only for the active platform.
  • Adds focused unit coverage and an isolated end-to-end mismatch, repair, and successful-install workflow.
  • Removes manual E2E cleanup because the harness already supplies isolated state.

… URL

Review feedback. The comparison read every dotted number in the URL path,
so a legitimate entry whose route happens to carry one — `/api/1.0/`, a
numbered CDN bucket, a distro pool — was rejected with a misleading
stale-release error. Rejecting a valid locked install is worse than
missing an invalid one.

Read only the two positions that identify a release: the tag segment of a
forge download URL and the artifact file name. A number anywhere else in
the path is now ignored, and an entry with no number in either position
installs as before.

Also compare version components numerically, so a zero-padded tag such as
`1.02.0` still matches the version `1.2.0`, while `1.2.3` still refuses a
`1.2.30` artifact.

The narrowed rule flags the same 9 of 918 platform rows across the 13
lockfiles it was checked against, and stays silent on the ambiguous
shapes, which are now table-driven tests.

The e2e harness gives each test a fresh MISE_DATA_DIR under its own
isolated directory, so removing the shfmt install and download paths at
the top did nothing. AGENTS.md says e2e tests do not need cleanup steps.

Assert on a backtick-free part of the error instead of the whole
sentence: shfmt wants the literal in single quotes, and shellcheck then
reports SC2016 for the backticks inside them.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

`mise install` no longer refuses a lockfile entry whose release tag
contains `@`.

`mise lock` writes such tags percent-encoded, e.g.
`.../download/cli%400.46.0/sentry-darwin-arm64` for getsentry/toolkit's
`cli@0.46.0`. The locked-URL check added in #13401 read the raw path, so
`%40` glued a `40` onto the version (`400.46.0`) and the install failed
against its own entry, with no way to repair it by re-running `mise
lock`. The check now percent-decodes the path first, so `cli@0.46.0`
matches version `0.46.0`.

Fixes #14250
