mise dot track now reports each target's file count and size before confirmation, helping users catch large caches or session directories before saving an initial checkpoint. The tracking result also includes the count and size when confirmation is skipped.

mise dot track --dry-run ~/.codex
mise dot paths --preview ~/.codex

Both commands inspect the prospective capture without changing configuration or saving a checkpoint. paths --preview also lists files. Dry runs show exclusions, omitted files, nested repositories, and incomplete scans; long omission lists are summarized after twenty entries.

Trees over 5,000 files or 256 MiB produce a warning with guidance to exclude subdirectories or track individual files. These thresholds are advisory. Incomplete scans are reported before confirmation. Overlapping targets use the same ownership rules as capture, so a nested entry's files are not counted twice.

The preview performs a metadata scan without reading file contents and does not hold the declaration lock during a dry run. The actual baseline capture scans again after enrollment.

Validation: existing CI passed on the reviewed head. Unit and end-to-end coverage includes counts, sizes, overlapping entries, omissions, exclusions, and dry runs leaving configuration unchanged.

Documentation validation: scoped formatting/lint checks, TOML example parsing, and a full site build at the stack tip. The five focused dotfiles end-to-end tests passed locally.

AI-assisted — Tool: Codex; model: OpenAI/unavailable; version: unavailable.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes dotfile enrollment UX and filesystem walk behavior used by track/preview; mistakes could mis-size trees or skip paths, though dry-run avoids writes and actual capture still runs after enrollment.

Overview
Adds mise dot track --dry-run (-n) to walk prospective targets and print per-path file counts, total size, exclusions, omissions, nested repos, and incomplete scans without writing config or holding the declaration lock.

mise dot track now sizes each target the same way before confirmation: prompts and success logs include the summary, large trees (>5,000 files or 256 MiB) get an advisory warning, and overlapping targets use capture-style ownership so nested paths are not double-counted.

mise dot paths --preview shares the new preview_set / walk_selected plumbing and prints count and size in its header (still listing every file). Walk logic also counts symlink/nested-repo bytes correctly and skips re-walking subtrees owned by a more specific entry.

Docs, usage spec, man page, unit tests, and an e2e script cover dry-run, preview, exclusions, and --encrypt affecting the preview.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The dotfile tracking commands now support dry-run previews. Previews report captured files, total size, omitted content, and large-tree warnings without writing tracking state. The paths preview uses the same capture calculation.

Keep --dry-run free of declaration locking.

declaration_lock() creates the hashed cache lockfile for the .dotfiles-declarations.lock path. It also returns an error when another tracking command holds that lock. Acquire it only for the mutating branch.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

27f44aa88370 vs f3709f2a889d · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude nested repositories from byte totals.

The walker counts a nested repository as a captured path, but history stores it only as a gitlink. symlink_metadata(path).len() therefore adds directory metadata to the preview size, while captured content contributes zero bytes. Exclude nested repository paths from CaptureRoot::bytes and add a summary test.

🟡 Minor · Show active exclusions in mise dot paths --preview output. · paths.rs:45-96

src/cli/dotfiles/paths.rs:45-96
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Show active exclusions in mise dot paths --preview output. The preview omits excluded files from its count and file list, but the human-readable preview does not print tracked.exclude. This makes the documented “what is left out” preview incomplete. Print the exclusions in the preview branch, as mise dot track --dry-run already does.

`mise dot track <dir>` wrote the declaration and started the baseline
before enumerating anything, so a user who tracked `~/.codex` learned it
was 22,972 files only after a ten-minute save. `mise dot paths --preview`
listed the files but gave no count, and neither docs page mentioned it.

The confirmation prompt now shows each path's file count and total size
(`dotfiles: track ~/.codex (22,972 files, 1.2 GiB)?`), the `tracking`
line repeats it when the prompt is skipped, and a tree over 5,000 files
or 256 MiB gets a warning pointing at scoped exclusions. `mise dot track
--dry-run` (`-n`) prints the count, size, and what a save would leave out
(omissions, nested repositories) and writes nothing. `mise dot paths
--preview` prints the same count and size above its file list, and the
synthetic preview walk it used is now a shared helper both commands call.
The docs recommend previewing a directory before tracking it and trimming
it with `mise dot exclude`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-ups: `mise dot track --dry-run` held the exclusive
declaration lock for the whole preview walk, so a long preview made
concurrent declaration commands fail although it writes nothing; a dry
run no longer takes the lock. Files an exclusion glob left out are not
walked at all, so the dry run now prints the `[history] exclude` globs in
force under each path. The man page is regenerated for the new flag.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up: when the preview walk hit the scan cap, only the dry
run reported it; the confirmation prompt showed the partial count and the
baseline, walking under the same cap, could not capture the rest. The
incomplete reasons are now warned about before the prompt on the normal
path too.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up: past ten omitted or nested paths the dry run collapsed
them into a summary pointing at `mise dot paths`, which cannot list a
path that was never enrolled. A dry run now prints every omitted and
nested path; the e2e asserts twelve.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ile bytes

Review follow-ups: a dry run listed every omitted or nested path, so a
tree full of them could flood the terminal; it now lists twenty and
counts the rest, pointing at `mise dot paths` once the path is tracked.
The preview's byte total re-stat'd every captured path, so a symlink
added the length of its target string and a nested repository its
directory entry; only regular files count now. The exclusion globs are
read once per run instead of once per previewed path.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up: each target was previewed in a set of its own, so with
nested targets in one command (`mise dot track ~/.config ~/.config/nvim`)
the outer preview counted the inner target's files too and could warn of
a large tree that the baseline would never capture under it. The preview
now walks one set holding every target of the run beside the entries
already tracked, and reports each target from that walk's owner index,
so a more specific entry owns its subtree as in the real capture. Unit
test with a nested pair; e2e asserts the partitioned counts.

…irectory

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`mise dot track --dry-run --encrypt` on an already-tracked path must
preview what the new flags would capture, not what the entry's current
policy captures. The preview set holds both the target's new declaration
and the declarations already in the configuration, so nothing but
`TrackedSet::push` dropping the later duplicate keeps the run's own flags
in front of the entry's old ones. Pin it: the credential guard omits the
token in a plain preview and lifts in an `--encrypt` preview of the same
path.
