feat(bootstrap): remove module resources with unapply - #13441
Conversation
…resources Removing an application that spans several resources took one command per resource type. `mise bootstrap unapply <env>` removes everything a config environment contributes in one step: managed files and directories, user services, and dotfile entries and edits. What to remove is the difference between the desired state with the environment selected and without it, so nothing about earlier runs is recorded and a resource the base configuration or another selected environment still declares is kept. Targets that changed since they were applied are kept unless --force is given, and packages, repos and Compose projects are reported with the command that removes them. …ply removes it Review findings on three paths where the removal plan promised more than the apply would do: - user services were removed by name, so an edited or replaced unit, agent, or task was deleted even though changed targets are kept without --force. The installed definition is now compared with the declaration first, and a service that drifted, has an unresolved command, or cannot be inspected is reported and kept. - dotfile entries and edits were listed whenever their target existed, and the domain planner then failed the whole run for one changed target. Each candidate is now planned individually, so a target it refuses is reported and the rest of the module is still removed. - --force accepted a path whose type is not what the declaration describes, which the apply then refuses partway through the run. Those stay skipped. Also teach the re-invocation argument rewriting that --cd/-C take a value, so a directory spelled like a selection flag is not dropped. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…efuse More review findings on the same theme, each one a case where the plan promised something the apply could not do: - a managed directory is removed non-recursively, so one that still holds anything this plan does not remove is now reported and kept. Directories are planned after every other resource, deepest first, so a directory whose only contents are the module's own files is still removed. - `--cd` has already taken effect in this process, so forwarding it to the re-invocation resolved a relative path a second time. The child inherits the directory instead. - the confirmation now defaults to no, so a prompt that reaches EOF cancels rather than removing resources. - uncovered-section reporting reads the bootstrap config maps, so a module that declares its packages in an independent config root is reported too. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…iling Querying the installed definitions in one batch made any render or query error abort the whole plan, so one service mise cannot inspect blocked removal of the module's files, directories and dotfiles. Each candidate is queried on its own and a failure is reported like any other service the command keeps, matching how an unavailable service manager is already handled. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A `state = "absent"` declaration describes a resource the module never applied, so undoing it would mean creating one. Files, directories and user services declared absent are now left out of the removal plan, and a user service that converged to absent is recognized as not installed, so the dry run and the confirmation count report only what actually changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reading a managed directory to see what this plan leaves behind discarded both the read_dir error and per-entry errors, so a directory mise cannot enumerate was scheduled for removal and the non-recursive delete then failed with "Directory not empty" after the dotfiles and edits had already been removed. The inspection result now distinguishes an unreadable directory, which is reported and kept like one that still holds something. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…etting state The type-mismatch, non-empty-directory, and unreadable-directory cases reused the ssh module's targets and deleted them between phases. Each one now declares its own environment file and targets, so the test never removes anything and cleanup is left to the harness, as e2e tests here are meant to. …se declarations Two review findings on what unapply treats as consent and as a shared resource: - a non-interactive run without --yes skipped the prompt and removed anyway. It now fails with the command to use, matching `mise daemons prune`, and an unanswered prompt is a refusal rather than consent. - a resource the rest of the configuration declares absent counted as shared, so a file, directory, or user service only the module wanted present was kept. Only declarations of presence hold a resource back now. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The confirmation consulted only the subcommand flag, so `mise --yes bootstrap unapply`, `MISE_YES=1`, and the `yes` setting still failed a non-interactive run asking for `--yes`. It now treats them as the answer, the way the rest of the CLI does. The e2e harness exports MISE_YES for every test, so the case that asserts the refusal drops it for that one command. mise bootstrap unapply to remove one module's resourcesDropping --cd/-C from the re-invocation closed only one of the two ways a directory is entered: MISE_CD is inherited by the child, and a relative value is resolved again from the directory this process already moved to, so `MISE_CD=sub mise bootstrap unapply <env>` failed with "failed to set current directory to .../sub/sub". The child no longer receives it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

Removing a bootstrap module from
envleaves its resources on the machine.mise bootstrap unapply <ENV>…removes the managed files, directories, user services, and dotfile entries and edits contributed by one or more modules.Remove the module from
envinmiserc.toml, keep its configuration file on disk, then preview and confirm cleanup:The command temporarily selects the named environments alongside the remaining selection, so it works after a module has been deselected. To remove several modules together, use
mise bootstrap unapply ssh gpg.Removal behavior
Mise compares the current configuration with and without the named environments; it does not maintain a history of applied resources. Keep the module declarations until cleanup is complete.
--forceis supplied. Directories must be empty after the planned removals; unreadable directories and managed paths with an unexpected type are kept even with--force.state = "absent"are not reversed.--yes, the global--yes,MISE_YES, and theyessetting approve it without a prompt; mise enablesyesin CI.Packages, repositories, and Compose projects require separate cleanup, with guidance printed for those declarations. Package pruning is not limited to one module. Other bootstrap sections, including system services, are outside the command's scope.
--prompt-secretssupports configurations that require secret inputs.Validation
The PR adds e2e coverage for previews, shared resources, changed targets, deselected environments, directory and path safeguards, confirmation, and repeated removal, plus unit coverage for environment argument forwarding and service-status classification.
Editorial validation:
mise run lint-fix,cargo check --all-features, VitePress build, six TOML examples, 58 rendered internal links and anchors, and consistency between source help, the usage specification, CLI reference, and man page. Runtime tests were not rerun for the editorial update.Closes the manual-cleanup gap described in #13437; builds on the module documentation in #13439.

Note
High Risk
Destructive filesystem and user-service removal with conservative planning, but mistakes or
--forcecould delete user data; confirmation defaults to no in non-interactive runs.Overview
Adds
mise bootstrap unapply <ENV>…so you can tear down what a bootstrap module contributed after removing it fromenv, instead of hand-rollingdot unapply, state = "absent", and service removal.Removal is planned by diffing desired state with vs. without the named environments (module config must stay on disk). It covers managed files, directories, user services, dotfiles, and edits, with
--dry-run, interactive confirmation (or--yes/ global yes), and--forcefor drifted targets. Shared resources from other envs are kept; non-empty or unreadable directories and wrong path types are skipped. Packages, repos, Compose, and system services are reported with separate cleanup guidance. The CLI re-selects missing envs via a child process (with safe handling of--cd/MISE_CD).Docs, usage spec, man page, and e2e/unit tests accompany the new
system/unapplyplanner andConfig::without_environments.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 34b1de4. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
