Registry entries can now set a url for the tool's project homepage or repository. Closes #4284.

Before this change, the registry page could only link each backend to a URL guessed from its slug, and mise tool showed no project link. The guesses leave http:-only tools such as dart, flutter, and julia without a link, and produce wrong links for some slugs, e.g. aqua:x.ai/cli/grok → https://github.com/x.ai/cli.

# registry/dart.toml
description = "An approachable, portable, and productive language for high-quality apps on any platform"
url = "https://dart.dev"
$ mise tool dart
Backend:            http:dart
URL:                https://dart.dev
...

$ mise tool dart --url
https://dart.dev

$ mise registry dart --json | jq -r .url
https://dart.dev
  • Registry page: each tool name now links to its url, or to the first backend URL that can be inferred when url is unset.
  • mise tool: shows a URL: row and a url field in --json output (null when unset). A config alias of a registry tool shows the target tool's URL. mise tool <name> --url prints only the URL, or [none].
  • mise registry --json: includes url when set.
  • Validation: the build, the floating registry, and the registry schema all reject anything that isn't an http(s) URL, and reject {{ … }} templates, so a backend download url put in the wrong table doesn't get picked up as the project URL.
  • Seeded: URLs for 11 http:-only tools (android-cli, cursor-agent, dart, flutter, julia, neo4j, nomad-pack, oc, openshift-install, sentinel, tfc-agent), each checked to load. I left out grok, muse, and twg because I couldn't confirm a canonical homepage for them. grok still shows the wrong guessed link.

docs/contributing.md documents the field.

Validation

  • cli/test_registry and cli/test_tool e2e tests cover url being present and absent, including --url with and without --json. The dynamic-registry unit test covers runtime parsing.
  • mise run lint and cargo clippy --all-features --all-targets -D warnings pass.

Note

Low Risk
User-facing registry metadata and CLI display only; validation is additive and does not change install or version resolution behavior.

Overview
Registry entries can now set an optional url for a tool’s homepage or repository. The build, dynamic registry loader, and JSON schema all validate it as a plain http(s):// link (no {{ … }} download templates).

mise tool shows a URL line and a url field in --json (null when unset), plus --url to print only the link or [none]. Config aliases resolve to the target tool’s URL. mise registry --json omits url when unset and includes it when set.

The docs registry table links each tool name to the explicit url, or otherwise the first inferable backend URL (same rules as the site data loader). Eleven http:-only tools are seeded with canonical project URLs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • mise tool --url displays a tool’s project URL, with support for plain and JSON output.
    • Registry results now include project URLs when available; registry pages link tool names to their project homepages or repositories.
    • Registry entries can provide an explicit project URL, and tools without one continue to show no URL.
  • Documentation
    • Updated command and registry guidance to describe URL display and configuration.

Registry entries can set `url` to the project's homepage or repository.
`mise tool` and `mise registry --json` show it, and the registry page links
each tool name to it, falling back to the URL inferred from the first
backend. Seed it for the http-only tools that previously had no link.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Registry definitions now accept optional project URLs. The mise tool and mise registry --json outputs expose them, and registry pages link tool names to their URLs. Registry pages use backend URL inference when no explicit URL is set.

Changes

Registry project URLs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and validate registry URLs
schema/mise-registry-tool.json, src/registry.rs, build/registry_url.rs, build.rs, src/main.rs, registry/*.toml
Registry schema and Rust parsing accept optional project URLs. Shared validation rejects empty, non-HTTP(S), whitespace-containing, and brace-containing values. Build-time generation validates and includes URLs in generated registry tools. Ten registry entries add URL values.
Expose URLs through the CLI
src/cli/registry.rs, src/cli/tool.rs, mise.usage.kdl, docs/cli/tool.md, man/man1/mise.1, e2e/cli/test_registry, e2e/cli/test_tool
Registry JSON includes a URL when present. mise tool includes available URLs in its information output and adds a --url filter. Tests cover missing URLs, JSON output, and tool aliases.
Show URLs on registry pages
docs/registry.data.ts, docs/components/registry.vue, docs/contributing.md
Registry page data prefers the configured URL, then the first backend URL, then an empty string. The registry table links tool names when a URL exists. Contributor guidance describes the field and its display locations.

Validate registry URLs in the documentation build before merging so an unsafe contributed link cannot appear on the registry page. Correct the fallback guidance so contributors know when a URL is needed.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge; the previous URL-validation and alias-resolution findings are fixed, and the follow-up documentation-link fallback remains valid.

Summary

Adds optional project homepage metadata to registry entries and exposes it through registry JSON, mise tool, and the documentation registry.

  • Shares URL validation between build-time and floating-registry ingestion.
  • Resolves project URLs through configured tool aliases.
  • Links registry-page tool names to explicit or inferred HTTP(S) URLs.
  • Seeds canonical project URLs for eleven HTTP-backed tools.

… aliases

Share one url validator between build.rs and the floating registry parser so
both reject what the schema rejects, and look up the url for mise tool via
BackendArg::registry_tool so config aliases inherit the target entry's url.

On 2026.9.12, installing mise from crates.io for a Windows target fails:

```
cargo install --target x86_64-pc-windows-gnu --no-default-features \
  --features rustls,vfox/vendored-lua --locked mise
error: couldn't read `.../mise-2026.9.12/src/../crates/mise-shim/native-shim-marker`: No such file or directory
```

`src/shims.rs` embeds `crates/mise-shim/native-shim-marker` on Windows,
but that file is not in the published crate. Cargo leaves another
package's directory out of a crate even when `include` names the file,
so listing it does not help. The marker moves to `src/assets/`, which is
already packaged, and `mise-shim` (not published) reads it from there.
`.gitattributes` keeps it marked `binary`, which stops Git from changing
its line endings on Windows checkouts. `mise-shim` is now marked
`publish = false`, because it reads the marker from outside its own
package and was never published.

Two more files that have not been released yet would have broken `cargo
install mise` on **every** platform in the next release:

- `build/registry_url.rs`, needed by `build.rs` since #13533. `include`
now lists `/build/*.rs`.
- `schema/mise.json`, read by `src/cli/config/keys.rs` since #13551. It
is now in `include`.

Release publishes with `cargo publish --no-verify`, so nothing caught
these before users hit them.

Fixes #13572

### Validation

- I copied only the files `cargo package --list` reports into a clean
tree, added the workspace crates, and ran `cargo check --locked --bin
mise`. It failed on `build/registry_url.rs` before this change and
passes after it.
- The marker constant also compiles under `cfg(test)`, so `cargo check
--tests` on that tree reaches the Windows include on Linux. The marker
read no longer fails. The only failures left are test-only fixtures,
which `cargo install` does not compile.
- The 39 `shims::` unit tests pass.
- Not run: a real `x86_64-pc-windows-gnu` build (target not installed
locally).

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Chores**
* Updated release packaging to include the schema and build-related
files.
* The native shim marker is now sourced from its updated asset location,
keeping it available to the bundled shim.
* The shim package is no longer publishable as a standalone registry
package.
