A github: backend in the mise registry can set `attestations_since` to the first version whose release assets carry GitHub artifact attestations. From that version on, `mise lock` records github-attestations provenance without probing, and install requires a verified attestation even when the lockfile has none, so a "no attestations" answer from mise-versions (or a lockfile written after one) fails as a downgrade instead of skipping verification. It costs no GitHub API calls. Like min_version, it needs version_order = "semver" and a complete semantic version; other versions are unaffected. Seeded for github:aubepkg/aube from 2.2.5, where every release asset is attested. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

β¦registry-attestations
β¦ment - `mise lock` fails when verification settles on anything but GitHub attestations for a version the registry requires them for, instead of recording SLSA or nothing. - At install, the registry's requirement overrides the lockfile's provenance, and a lockfile entry that doesn't record it no longer skips verification. - The requirement covers additional_asset_patterns assets too. - It is looked up from the registry's declared backends, so a MISE_BACKENDS_<TOOL> override can't drop it. - The schema only allows attestations_since on github: backends. - Docs name both attestation kinds that satisfy it and how to check each. - Remove an aube cache file a local test run left in the tree. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
β¦registry-attestations
Unlike min_version, attestations_since never orders a version list: it compares the one version being installed against the boundary, and a version that isn't semver is simply not required. So it no longer needs version_order = "semver". That opens it to github: tools such as hivemind or podman, whose versions are semver but whose registry entries use source order. The value itself must still be a complete semantic version. The contributor docs spell out the rule that replaces it: every release whose version is semver at or past the boundary must be attested, which needs care for projects that ship backports out of order. β¦ments With registry_floating, the downloaded registry replaces the baked one, so an entry that omitted attestations_since would remove a requirement this mise release shipped with. Seeds attestations_since for github: backends whose releases carry GitHub attestations, at the first release where every binary asset has one: build provenance, or GitHub's release attestation for immutable releases. Each boundary also satisfies the contributor rule: no semver release at or past it (including out-of-order backports) lacks attestations. Skipped: tools whose latest release isn't fully attested, whose tags aren't semver, or with unattested out-of-order releases past the boundary (cargo-dist, coursier). Also skipped: terrastruct/d2, which moved to d2lang/d2, because confirming the rename costs a GitHub API call on every verification; and yt-dlp, whose date versions only sometimes parse as semver. GitHub treats owner and repository names case-insensitively, so github:Aubepkg/aube is the same repository as the registry's github:aubepkg/aube and must get the same requirement. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

mole's macOS download is GitHub's generated source archive (archive/refs/tags), not a release asset, and source archives carry no attestations. Stacked on #13584.
Without GitHub API calls, mise can't tell whether an artifact "has no attestations" or whether mise-versions (or a stale cache, or a lockfile written after one) just said so. Either way, a "none" answer skips attestation verification. This lets the mise registry, which ships inside the mise binary, declare which tools publish attestations, so that answer can't downgrade them.
For
aube@2.2.5and later installed throughgithub:aubepkg/aube, whether by that name or through theaubeshorthand:mise lockrecordsprovenance = "github-attestations"without probing anything, and fails if verification ends on anything else. SLSA doesn't substitute.additional_asset_patternsassets. The registry's requirement overrides whatever the lockfile recorded (nothing, or SLSA), so such a lockfile entry can't skip verification. It costs no GitHub API calls: the requirement is baked into the registry, and verification uses the attestations mise-versions returns, which #13584 already binds to the repository.
Scope
version_order.attestations_sincemust be a complete semantic version, but mise only compares the one version being installed against it and never orders a version list. So unlikemin_versionit works for tools withversion_order = "source". Versions that aren't semantic versions (refs, channels, date builds) are never required. The contributor docs add the matching rule: every release whose version is semver at or past the boundary must be attested.MISE_BACKENDS_<TOOL>override can't drop it.github:backends only. aqua already declares attestations per package in the aqua registry. Changes provenance enforcement on GitHub installs and lockfiles; mis-set boundaries or verification failures can block installs for many registry tools.
Overview
Registry
github:backends can now declareattestations_since, a semver boundary after which mise treats GitHub artifact attestations as mandatory for that tool.Lock and install behavior on the GitHub backend now consults the baked/floating registry via
requires_github_attestations. When a version is at or past the boundary (and attestation settings are enabled), mise records or expectsgithub-attestationsprovenance, overrides weaker lockfile provenance (none or SLSA), and failsmise lock/ install if verification does not matchβinstead of trusting a cached βno attestationsβ skip. The same rule applies to additional release assets.Supporting changes:
RegistryBackendandbuild.rsembed the field; JSON schema and contributor docs document validation (github:only, full semver); 42 registry tools are seeded with boundaries; unit tests and an e2e (test_github_registry_attestationsforaube) cover boundaries and downgrade cases.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit aa40a6c.
