Resolving a toolset asks, for every tool, whether its config file is a global config. That check tolerates symlinked path prefixes (for example Fedora Atomic's /home → /var/home), so when the path is not literally one of the global config files it resolves the path, and then every global config file, through canonicalize. Nothing was cached, and canonicalize is expensive on macOS (a getattrlist per path component). mise run resolves the toolset many times per task, so this repeated resolution was about 17% of its CPU time on macOS.

Resolutions of existing paths are now cached until config is reloaded. A path that does not exist yet is resolved again on every call, so a config file created later in the same command is still seen correctly. Config::reset(), which already rediscovers the global config files, now also clears this cache. A long-running process therefore follows a global-config symlink that was retargeted since the last load, instead of classifying files by its old destination.

Measurements

mise run noop in a project with one tool and a one-line task, macOS arm64, release build from the same source with and without the change. samply, 60 runs, CPU time summed over all threads:

before after
CPU per run (median) 55.0 ms 41.1 ms
share of CPU in desymlink_path 16.9% 0.9%

The machine was busy with other builds, so these are CPU rather than wall-clock numbers. On Linux, canonicalize is much cheaper and the gain is small.

Validation

A new unit test checks three things. The cached lookup returns what desymlink_path returns. A retargeted link keeps its cached destination until the cache is cleared, then follows the new one. And a missing path is not cached: once it becomes a symlink, the next call follows it. The existing desymlink_path and config tests pass.

Note

Low Risk
Performance-focused caching with explicit invalidation on config reset; behavior is intended to match prior symlink-aware global config checks, with tests for retargeting and late-created paths.

Overview
Adds a process-wide cache for symlink-resolved absolute paths used when deciding whether a config file counts as global. config_set_contains now calls desymlink_path_cached instead of re-running canonicalize on every tool during toolset resolution—this was a large share of CPU on macOS for repeated mise run work.

The cache only stores resolutions for paths that already exist; missing paths are resolved on each call so configs created mid-command still match. Config::reset() clears the cache so retargeted global-config symlinks are picked up after reload without serving stale destinations.

A unix unit test covers parity with the uncached helper, cache invalidation after retargeting, and the non-caching behavior for paths that appear later.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Configuration path comparisons now account for resolved symlinks while continuing to match exact paths.
    • Resetting configuration clears cached path resolutions, so subsequent checks reflect updated symlinks.
    • Path resolution results are no longer retained when a cache is cleared during an in-progress lookup, helping prevent stale results from affecting later configuration checks. Only existing absolute paths are cached; relative paths and paths that do not exist remain uncached.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The desymlink cache now uses a generation counter to prevent in-flight lookups from repopulating it after a clear. Config set membership uses cached path resolution, and Config::reset clears the cache.

Cached Path Membership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cache lifecycle and config membership
crates/mise-util/src/file.rs, src/config/mod.rs
The desymlink cache tracks a generation and only inserts a resolved path if the generation has not changed and the path exists. Config set membership uses cached resolution after the exact-path check, and config reset clears the cache.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8215c

A symlink changed while a process is running may leave a configuration path classified using its former destination. Because that classification affects trust checks, this is a conditional security risk, although the ability to trigger it in practice has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A cached symlink destination can outlive a path change and cause a subsequently examined, untrusted tracked config to retain a global classification that exempts it from trust checks. Creation during the resolution-to-existence-check interval can also cache an obsolete identity. Exploitability depends on control of a relevant path and the timing of a later classification before reset.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported exposure is configuration classified and loaded by the affected process, including tracked untrusted paths that can be made to appear global. The evidence does not establish remote reachability, elevated privileges, or cross-tenant scope.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If an actor can redirect a cached alias that matched a stable global-config entry, a later tracked-config lookup can compare its old destination, classify the redirected path as global, and skip trust checks before parsing. Relevant symlink control and lookup timing are unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Config reset invalidates cached destinations, and the generation check blocks stale reinsertion after a concurrent reset. Neither mechanism refreshes an existing entry when its symlink changes before reset.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The sequential test covers retargeting followed by explicit clearing and creation after a completed lookup, but not creation between resolution and the existence check. In that interval, the code can store an identity computed before the path existed.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider obtaining fresh path identity at trust-sensitive classification, or binding that classification to an explicitly immutable config snapshot. Exercise symlink retargeting and creation across lookup and reset boundaries.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium risk] Adds caching to symlink resolution in config lookups.

The PR appears safe to merge; no outstanding finding or new actionable issue was identified.

Summary

The PR caches symlink resolutions used for global-config membership checks and clears the cache on config reset.

  • The latest change adds a generation check so a resolution started before a reset cannot repopulate the cleared cache.
  • The previous stale-cache finding is addressed by clearing the cache during Config::reset().

Config::reset rediscovers the global config files; clear the cache too so
a symlink retargeted since the last load is followed to its new target.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.
