Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: π΅ Low Β· up to The change is mergeable with owner awareness that some suffixless tar and ZIP files may still be copied rather than unpacked, or fail during unpacking. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: π΅ Low Β· up to Extensionless downloads can now be unpacked and used during installation. Existing checksum checks limit who can change most of those downloads, but archive extraction adds a containment question that this review could not fully resolve. - Around line 110-111: Replace the four-byte ZIP signature check in the archive
unpacking flow with an `unzip -t` probe so valid ZIPs with prepended stubs are
detected; treat status 1 as a valid ZIP warning, status 9 as a non-ZIP and
continue to tar detection and copying, and allow status 1 during extraction.

its default failure behavior.

Formula sources were staged by file name alone. A URL such as GitHub's `https://codeload.github.com/<owner>/<repo>/tar.gz/refs/tags/v0.0.23` has no extension, so `ExtractionFormat::from_file_name` returned `Raw` and the tarball was copied into the build directory unextracted. The formula's `install` then ran against a lone gzip file, e.g. `go build` failing with "go.mod file not found". `brew` handles these by falling back to the file's content when the name is inconclusive. This surfaced building `cf-vault` from the `jacobbednarz/tap` formula, whose `url` is exactly such a codeload URL: https://github.com/jacobbednarz/homebrew-tap/blob/b03141211969573bb4b4fcc9c3016ba04e5898ec/Formula/cf-vault.rb Add `ExtractionFormat::detect`, which keeps the name's verdict when it has one and otherwise sniffs the leading bytes via `ExtractionFormat::from_magic`: zip, or a gzip/xz/bzip2/zstd/plain stream whose payload opens with a ustar header. Requiring the tar header keeps bare compressed files and binaries staged as-is. Formula source staging uses it, and it replaces the cask fetcher's zip-only `detect_extraction_format`, so suffixless tarballs in casks are unpacked too rather than copied as a raw binary. The shim's `MiseDownload.unpack`, which stages formula resources, had the same name-only check; it now falls back to the zip magic or a `tar tf` probe.
The shim stages formula `resource`s itself through `MiseDownload.unpack`, so its zip/`tar tf` fallback for extensionless URLs was only exercised by hand. Run the real shim against a formula whose resources are a suffixless gzip tarball, a plain script and an empty file, and check the keg contents. The download cache is pre-seeded, so `MiseDownload.fetch` never reaches the network. The shim needs Ruby 3 or later (it uses endless methods), so the test reuses `tap.rs`'s `test_ruby()`, now shared as a `#[cfg(test)]` helper, instead of a bare `which ruby` that could find macOS's system Ruby 2.6.
