Adds an experimental spinel: backend that compiles a Ruby command-line tool from a GitHub repository into a native executable with Spinel, Matz's Ruby AOT compiler (requested in discussion 13301).

[tools."spinel:tobi/try"]
version = "1.10.1"
entrypoint = "try.rb"
bin = "try"
tag_prefix = "v"
$ mise install && mise x -- try --help
try v1.10.1 - ephemeral workspace manager

mise ls-remote spinel:tobi/try lists git tags through git ls-remote, so it never touches the GitHub API. Options are entrypoint, bin, tag_prefix, source_ref and spinel. The backend needs the spinel compiler on PATH, or its path in the spinel option. Spinel ships as source, so mise does not install it yet. macOS and Linux only.

Status

We're doing this, but only because it's for Matz. It is gated behind experimental, and it may not survive. If it turns into a large maintenance burden, or Spinel doesn't take off, it will be removed. The docs page says the same.

Based on nateberkopec/mise-backend-spinel; Nate is credited as co-author.

Testing

I built Spinel at the commit Nate's README pins, then ran mise install and mise x -- try --help against tobi/try. Unit tests cover tag parsing and option validation. Clippy with -D warnings is clean. mise run lint-fix fails locally on the repo's existing package.homepage manifest warnings, so lint did not run; CI will.

Note

Medium Risk
Install runs git and an external compiler on user-supplied repos; inputs are validated and the feature is experimental-only, but failed or malicious source could still affect the build environment.

Overview
Adds an experimental spinel: installation backend that builds a Ruby CLI from a GitHub repo (owner/repo) into a standalone native binary via the external Spinel AOT compiler, without bundling Ruby or Spinel in the output.

Install flow shallow-fetches a tag or source_ref with git, runs the configured spinel binary on entrypoint, and writes the result to bin/. Remote versions come from git ls-remote tags (optional tag_prefix), not the GitHub API. Tool options include entrypoint, bin, tag_prefix, source_ref, and spinel (install-time only).

Wiring updates register BackendType::Spinel, hook it into backend dispatch and mise edit, extend the registry JSON schema, and add docs/sidebar/llms.txt entries. Use requires mise settings experimental=true; Windows is rejected at install time.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟑 Moderate · up to 1fbcb

The compiler override appears able to evade safe-mode restrictions, and changing a commit pin can reuse an older executable. These affect trust in project configuration and installed-tool provenance. Existing input validation and installation cleanup limit other risks.

Retained concerns

  • High Β· security Β· inferred: The new spinel option selects an executable without a safe-mode guard. The shared preflight blocks configuration-provided postinstall code and install_env, but does not reject this compiler override. If project tool options reach installation in safe mode, a malicious configuration can select executable code rather than merely describe a tool to install. Complete config-trust reachability was not established.
  • Medium Β· security Β· inferred: A completed install for the same backend and version can satisfy a request with a different source_ref, without rebuilding or comparing source provenance. Consequently, changing the configured commit pin can leave the previous executable selected, including across project configurations sharing that install. This undermines source-pin assurance even though the generic version-directory reuse behavior predates the PR.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred β€” A malicious configured compiler could exercise the installation process's authority and access its available environment and writable assets. Reused version directories can carry source-identity mistakes between configurations using the same tool installation. Additional privilege gain, tenant crossing, or production-service exposure was not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred β€” The principal conditional attack path is project-controlled spinel option to executable selection to install-time execution, despite safe mode's stated prohibition on project-controlled code execution. Safe-mode settings filtering protects operator-owned settings but does not itself validate this tool option. The complete trust-parser path remains unverified.
  • inferred β€” A previous build can remain active after source_ref changes under the same version label because installation satisfaction does not compare that pin. A forced reinstall or different version label avoids the particular cache-reuse path, but ordinary repeated installation does not establish that the requested commit produced the executable.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed β€” Remote listing passes a constructed repository URL to git ls-remote; tag_prefix only filters its output. Installation passes arguments separately, rejects entrypoint traversal syntax and malformed output names, and restricts explicit commits to full hexadecimal identifiers. These controls address input shaping but do not authorize the configured compiler.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed β€” Install and uninstall use the same logical tool/version locking scheme. Incomplete markers participate in installed-state checks, ordinary backend errors remove partial output unless retention is enabled, and Spinel clears stale source before compilation. Publication precedes shared postinstall and final verification, so these controls do not establish atomicity across every terminal failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed β€” Define and enforce safe-mode authorization for configuration-selected compiler executables before fetching or executing source. Distinguish operator-owned compiler configuration from project-controlled overrides if both must remain supported.
  • proposed β€” Persist source and build identity and compare it during install satisfaction, or incorporate that identity into the installation namespace. Record the resolved commit for tag builds and make differing source pins invalidate reuse.

Editors validate and autocomplete `mise.toml` from `schema/mise.json`,
but a `[tools]` entry only ever got the generic options, so
`asset_pattern`, `features`, `release_type` and friends were untyped and
invisible. This makes the schema offer each backend's own options, and
the core tools' options, only for tools of that kind.

```toml
[tools]
"github:cli/cli" = { version = "2", asset_pattern = 5 }        # flagged: must be a string
"aqua:o/r"       = { version = "1", libc = "uclibc" }          # flagged: glibc, gnu or musl
java             = { version = "21", release_type = "stable" } # flagged: ga or ea
"cargo:ripgrep"  = { version = "latest", features = ["pcre2"] } # completes and validates
```

## What changes

- **Typed options per backend.** A `patternProperties` entry on `tools`
matches the backend prefix (`^github:`, `^(pypi|pipx):`, ...) and points
at a definition that extends the generic tool. Covered: github, gitlab,
forgejo, ubi, http, s3, aqua, cargo, npm, pypi/pipx, gem, go, conda,
spm, packslip, and spinel from #13922. Every other key still gets the
generic definition, so an unrelated `cargo:foo = { entrypoint = 5 }` is
unaffected.
- **Core tools.** `python` (`patch_sysconfig`), `java` (`release_type`),
`rust` (`profile`, `components`, `targets`, `mr_boxington`) and core
`dotnet` (`runtime`), including `core:` and bracketed spellings.
- **Task tool tables.** `[tasks.*.tools]` uses the same typed
definitions.
- **Per-platform overrides.** `platforms.<os>-<arch>` (and the
`platform` alias) is modelled for every tool, and typed for the options
each backend actually reads per platform (for example `github`
`asset_pattern` and `url`, `http` `url` and `checksum`).
- **`prerelease`** is added as a generic option, because every backend
reads it. `lazy_bins` now accepts a string as well as an array, matching
the parser.
- **Booleans** accept `true`/`false`, the strings `"true"`/`"false"`,
and `1`/`0`, because mise coerces them. This avoids flagging configs
that work today.
- **`experimental_monorepo_root`** is accepted as a deprecated key. mise
still honors it with a warning, but the root schema rejected it.

Option definitions live once in `tool_<backend>_options`, and platform
entries `$ref` into them, which keeps the diff to one definition per
option. `schema/mise-task.json` is regenerated by `render:schema`.

The option lists come from the backend source (what each backend
actually reads), not only the docs. Options the docs miss, such as the
`format` option on `github`, `http` and `s3`, are included.

## Out of scope

Left for follow-ups: per-preset daemon `options` and `ports`, the
undocumented `[bootstrap]` `secrets`, `groups`, `users` and `compose`
sections, and typed options in `mise-registry-tool.json`.

## Testing

- `ajv compile --strict-types --strict-tuples` passes on both schemas,
the same flags `hk` runs.
- `e2e/config/test_schema_ajv` gains valid and invalid cases for each
family above, plus task tool tables. `e2e/config/test_schema_tombi`
checks that tombi accepts the valid config and rejects a wrong-typed
`asset_pattern` and a bad `release_type`. The existing schema e2e tests
still pass.

This builds on #13922, which adds the `spinel` backend.
