security(http): redact URL credentials in debug logs - #14155
Conversation
The logger only hid secrets registered with it, so credentials embedded in a URL (`https://user:token@host`) were printed by `DEBUG GET ...` and by `DEBUG ARGS:` when the URL was passed on the command line. Add `redact_url_userinfo`, apply it to every log record in the logger, and use it at the http client's log and error sites, including the `MISE_LOG_HTTP` line that bypasses the logger. π WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds URL-userinfo redaction and applies it to HTTP errors, logs, retry messages, replacement traces, and logger output. The redaction preserves other URL components and leaves text without matching credentials unchanged. ChangesURL Userinfo Redaction

A credential that contains raw whitespace can still appear partly or fully in that output. This is an edge case, but it is worth fixing or accepting knowingly before merge. π₯ Pre-merge checks | β 4 | β 1β Failed checks (1 warning)

If a request to
https://user:token@hosttimes out, this hint includes the rawurl. The caller receives that hint in the error chain.Logger::logcannot protect a caller that displays the error directly. Uselog_url(&url)here, as the other HTTP error sites do. Based on learnings, error text needs redaction before diagnostic output.π€ Prompt for AI Agents

β¦swords The request-timeout hint still printed the raw URL, and a raw space in a password stopped the userinfo scan before its `@`. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4DHNHT1GAJWZEH4R12W9TCV

In free text whitespace now always ends a URL, so `https://host:8080 me@x` keeps its text. The ARGS line redacts each argument before joining, where a raw space in userinfo is unambiguous. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4DJCYMKCKVN8NQGG62R0NTK

Debug logging printed credentials embedded in URLs. mise's logger only hides values that were registered as secrets, and a token in a URL's userinfo never is. With an spm
api_urllikehttps://user:TOKEN@git.example.com/api/v1,MISE_DEBUG=1printed the token in the HTTP request lines and, when the URL was passed on the command line, in theDEBUG ARGS:line. Before:
After:
How
mise_util::redactions::redact_url_userinforeplaces theuser:password@part of everyscheme://URL in a string with[redacted]@. The userinfo is everything before the last@in the authority, so an unencoded@in a password stays hidden; an@in the path or query is left alone. In log text whitespace ends a URL, sohttps://host:8080 me@example.comis left intact.MISE_LOG_FILE.DEBUG ARGS:redacts each argument before joining them. Inside one argument only/,?or#ends the authority, so a password with a raw space (https://user:my secret@host, which URL parsers accept) is hidden too.MISE_LOG_HTTPline (aneprintln!that bypasses the logger), the retry warning, theurl_replacementstrace lines, and the HTML, request-timeout and download-timeout error messages also redact the URL directly. Errors are printed outside the logger, so they need their own redaction.Only the userinfo is redacted. Query-string tokens (
?token=β¦) are still logged as before.Validation
redact_url_userinfo(password and username-only forms,@in path/query/password, several URLs in one line, URL inside parentheses, a port URL followed by an email address, spaces in an argument's userinfo) and for the HTTP client's URL formatting, plus a test that a request timing out against auser:TOKEN@URL returns an error without the token.cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warningspasses.π€ Generated with Claude Code
