mise dot sync now refuses to publish saved versions that look like they contain a secret.

The history credential filter only looks at file names (*token*, *.pem, …). A tracked ~/.bashrc passes it however many tokens are exported in it, and removing a token from the file leaves it in every earlier saved version, so a push publishes it permanently. This came up on omacom/omarchy#14452, which tracks ~/.bashrc by default.

Before publishing, mise reads the versions the origin does not have yet and stops on a line that looks like:

  • a provider token: ghp_, github_pat_, glpat-, sk-, AKIA…, xox…
  • a private key block
  • an assignment to a name ending in _KEY, _TOKEN, _SECRET, or _PASSWORD (keybind = … and export TOKEN=$(gh auth token) do not match)
$ mise dot sync
Error: cannot publish: line 2 of home/.shellrc in saved version 3f2a9c1d0e4b looks like a secret. Removing it from the file does not remove it from saved versions. Encrypt the file with `encrypt = true`, remove that history (see https://mise.jdx.dev/dotfiles/encryption.html#remove-plaintext-from-history), or run `mise dot sync --allow-plaintext-history` to publish it anyway

The message names the file, line, and version, never the value.

Behavior

  • Only versions the origin does not have are read. A secret that was already published does not block every later sync, and a clean sync costs nothing.
  • Background syncs (history.sync = "sync") refuse the same way. The failure shows in mise dot status; this PR adds no new notification.
  • The existing --allow-plaintext-history flag and history.allow_plaintext_history setting skip this check along with the encryption check. Their docs and help text say so. There is no per-file opt-out yet.
  • Files over 1 MiB and binary files are not read. This is a safety net for obvious cases, not proof a version is clean, and it only applies when publishing, not when pulling.

Testing

New unit tests cover the patterns (including the non-matches above), a removed secret still blocking until published, and binary files. e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_secret_scan runs the flow: block, still blocked after removal, publish with the flag, later syncs pass. Nine existing dotfiles sync e2e tests pass, and cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes the dotfiles publish path with heuristic content scanning; false positives could block syncs, but the behavior is gated behind an existing explicit opt-out.

Overview
mise dot sync now scans dotfile history that the origin does not have yet and refuses to publish when a line looks like a secret (provider token prefixes, private key blocks, or *_KEY / *_TOKEN / *_SECRET / *_PASSWORD-style assignments). Errors cite file, line, and commit short hash onlyβ€”never the valueβ€”and still apply when the secret was removed from the working file but remains in an older checkpoint.

The check runs in the existing publish preflight (alongside the encryption plaintext-history audit) unless --allow-plaintext-history or history.allow_plaintext_history is set; those opt-outs are documented as skipping both checks. Already-published blob objects are skipped via new reachable_objects plumbing on the history repo. Files over 1 MiB and binary blobs are not scanned.

Docs, CLI/man/KDL help, and settings schema text are updated accordingly, with unit tests for matchers and an e2e test_dotfiles_secret_scan flow.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Dotfiles sync now scans unpublished file history for likely secrets, including provider tokens, private keys, and secret-like assignments. A match blocks sync, and the warning identifies the file, line, and saved version without revealing the secret.
    • Use --allow-plaintext-history to bypass this check and the existing check for unencrypted history. Removing a secret from the current file does not remove it from earlier saved versions.
    • Binary files and files larger than 1 MiB are not scanned.

The credential filter in history only looks at file names, so a tracked
~/.bashrc is saved however many tokens are exported in it, and removing a
token from the file leaves it in every earlier saved version. Before a
sync publishes, scan the versions the origin does not have yet and refuse
when a line looks like a provider token, a private key, or an assignment
to a *_KEY/_TOKEN/_SECRET/_PASSWORD name. The error names the file, line
and version, never the value. --allow-plaintext-history skips it.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Dotfiles history sync now scans unpublished saved versions for secret-like content before publication. The scan skips specified file types and sizes, avoids rescanning versions already at the origin, and reports matches without revealing their values. The plaintext-history option bypasses this check.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Adds secret scanning to dotfile history before publishing.

The PR appears safe to merge; both previous findings are fixed and no new blocking issue was found.

What we checked:

  • Published contents stay allowed: The scan skips objects anywhere in the origin’s history, not just its latest saved version.

Summary

mise dot sync checks unpublished saved versions for likely secrets before publishing. The existing opt-out skips this check.

  • Previously published contents are now recognized throughout the origin’s history, including when saved again unchanged.
  • The refusal message and docs now explain that users must remove earlier plaintext history; encryption protects later saves.
  • Assignment matching now covers quoted values with spaces and excludes paths and command substitutions.
  • Both previous review findings are addressed. No new actionable issues were found.

… has had

A quoted assignment such as DB_PASSWORD="correct horse battery staple" was
missed because no single word reached eight characters. Quoted values are
now read through their spaces. Contents the origin holds anywhere in its
history, not just its newest tree, are no longer rescanned, so a removed
secret that is saved again unchanged cannot block every later sync. The
refusal and the docs no longer suggest that encrypting the file unblocks a
push, since it only protects later saves.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable β€” counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context β€” on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak β€” instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.
