feat(vars): ask once and remember [vars] answers per machine with mise vars prompt - #14190
Conversation
A [vars] entry with a `prompt` is asked for by `mise bootstrap --prompt-vars` and the answer is saved in $MISE_STATE_DIR/vars.toml. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M4EG4AWEZHDJM7P47KSG3Z1W

dispatching by value form, including `Val`, `Default`, and `Required`; reject it
consistently rather than relying on the `!resolve_opts.vars` check that misses
`Val`.
- Around line 578-579: Update the flow around prompt::answer to check for a
saved answer before rendering the fallback value; render the fallback only when
no saved answer exists, preserving saved-answer precedence.
Review comments at @src/config/env_directive/prompt.rs:
- Around line 82-88: Update the prompt flow around input.run() and save() to
reject empty input when the variable is required, rather than persisting it.
Treat an existing empty saved answer as unanswered so the Required resolver
prompts again instead of accepting it as a definition.
- Line 61: Update the save flow that writes vars.toml via write_atomic to use an
atomic-write variant that sets owner-only permissions before rename and
preserves them on replacements; also create the state directory with private
owner-only permissions.

A
[vars]entry can now ask for its value once per machine, offer a default, and remember the answer without putting it in a config file or dotfiles history. Use case: sharing one dotfiles setup while each machine picks its own Git identity (discussion #14183).Enter accepts the default. Every answer, accepted defaults included, is saved in
$MISE_STATE_DIR/vars.toml(mode 0600, written under a lock), so it is asked once and is then available to templates ({{ vars.git_name }}), tasks and tools.mise vars promptandmise bootstrap --prompt-vars. Shell activation, mise run, background sync and runs without a terminal use the saved answer, thendefault, and arequiredvar with neither fails with its usual error.--prompt-varson bootstrap too: withmise bootstrap --adopt owner/dotfilesthe config that declares the vars only exists after the checkout is fetched, somise vars promptcannot run first. The flag is passed through to the full run in the checkout. It is rejected with a bootstrap subcommand.mise.local.toml, the saved answer, thedefault.[vars]: it is what templates, tasks and dotfiles already read, so no second lookup is needed.promptin[env]is an error.Limitations: answers are keyed by var name, so projects using the same name share one answer on a machine. Prompting is eager, so it asks about every unanswered prompt var in the loaded config, used or not; naming vars to
mise vars promptnarrows that. A--dry-runthat prompts still saves the answers. A follow-up could ask only for vars the run actually uses.Tested with terminal runs (Enter on the default, a typed value, only the named var, later
mise runreusing the answers with no prompt), unit tests for the touched area, and a new e2e test for the non-interactive paths.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: 2.1.293.

Medium Risk
Changes config var resolution and writes local state; scope is limited to
[vars]prompting and explicit CLI/bootstrap entry points, not general env or auth.Overview
Adds per-machine
[vars]prompting: a newpromptfield (withdefaultorrequired) lets mise ask once on an interactive terminal and persist answers in$MISE_STATE_DIR/vars.toml(locked, owner-only writes), outside config and dotfiles.Introduces
mise vars(ls,prompt, unset) to list vars and sources, set/get machine-local values, and drive interactive prompts;mise bootstrap --prompt-varsenables the same prompting during a full bootstrap run (rejected on bootstrap subcommands) and resets config so cached loads can prompt.Var resolution now layers saved answers between config-file values and
default;promptin[env]is rejected. Docs, usage spec, JSON schema, man pages, and e2e coverage accompany the CLI and resolver changes inenv_directive/prompt.rs.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit c3a4139. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
