With the watcher stopped, or for an entry tracked with --no-autosave, an edit nothing had saved yet was invisible in mise dot status. Only mise dot history diff showed it. Status now compares the tracked files with the latest checkpoint and lists what changed:

History: tracking 2 entries (3 files); 1 checkpoints recorded.
  latest checkpoint 1 (track, …): …
unsaved changes: 2 path(s) since the latest checkpoint (~/.config/app/added.toml, ~/.zshrc); `mise dot history diff` shows them, `mise dot save` records them.

mise dot status --json reports the same paths as history.unsaved: an empty list when nothing changed, or null when it couldn't be determined: there's no checkpoint yet, a tracked file or directory couldn't be read, or an encrypted file's ciphertext changed and this machine can't decrypt it without prompting to compare the contents.

It works the way history diff does, the same work git status does: every tracked file is read and hashed. It never prompts for a passphrase. A file the credential guard leaves out is never reported. An encrypted file is compared by its decrypted contents, so re-encrypting unchanged contents doesn't count as a change.

Reported in omacom/omarchy#3796 (comment).

Validation

  • New e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_status_unsaved covers: nothing to report right after a save; an edit and a new file in a tracked directory; a removed file; an unchanged versus an edited encrypted file, including with the encryption cache deleted; and unreadable files and directories.
  • All 39 e2e tests that run mise dot status pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • mise dot status lists tracked files changed since the latest checkpoint, including additions and removals. It displays up to five paths and indicates when more are present.
    • Changes to encrypted files are reported when their contents can be compared. Status may be unavailable when files cannot be read or decrypted reliably.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how to inspect or save reported changes and that checking status reads every tracked file.

Note

Medium Risk
Status now reads and hashes every tracked file (like history diff), with nuanced encrypted-file and unreadable-path handling; wrong comparisons could mislead users about unsaved state, though failures degrade to null rather than guessing.

Overview
mise dot status now surfaces tracked paths that differ from the latest checkpoint, so pending edits are visible without running mise dot history diff.

Human output lists up to five paths plus a count, with pointers to history diff and mise dot save. mise dot status --json adds history.unsaved: an empty array when nothing changed, a path list when there are edits, or null when comparison isn’t reliable (no checkpoint yet, unreadable tracked paths, or encrypted content that can’t be compared without prompting). Detection reuses a new unsaved_paths helper in replay.rs that walks and hashes tracked files like history diff, skips credential-guard omissions and “carried” omitted paths, and compares encrypted blobs by decrypted plaintext when possible.

Docs in history.md describe the new line, and e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_status_unsaved covers saves, adds/removes, encryption edge cases, and permission failures.

With the watcher stopped or a manual-save entry, an edit nothing had
saved yet was invisible in `mise dot status`; only `mise dot history
diff` showed it. Status now compares the tracked files with the latest
checkpoint, the same way `history diff` does, and lists what changed:

unsaved changes: 2 path(s) since the latest checkpoint (~/.config/app/added.toml, ~/.zshrc); `mise dot history diff` shows them, `mise dot save` records them.

`mise dot status --json` reports the same paths as `history.unsaved`.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Dotfile status now reports tracked paths changed since the latest checkpoint when it can compare the working tree with a snapshot. The comparison handles encrypted files and incomplete scans. Tests cover status output and comparison cases, and the documentation describes the output and read cost.

unsaved_paths compares a live capture with a checkpoint snapshot. It returns changed paths or None when unreadable files, incomplete captures, or unavailable decryption prevent a reliable comparison.

Status reported a file under an unreadable directory as removed, since
the walk leaves it out, and an unchanged encrypted file as edited when
the encryption cache missed and it encrypted to a new ciphertext. An
unreadable path now makes the answer unknown, and encrypted files are
compared by what they decrypt to, unknown when this machine cannot
decrypt them without prompting.

A save carries a saved file the walk now omits (over the size limit, a
special file) or did not finish scanning, so status no longer lists it
as removed.

A save carries an omitted path only while the tracking rules still
retain it. A saved file now omitted by policy, such as a credential
whose encryption was turned off, is recorded as removed, so status
reports it instead of skipping it.

Add a no-checkpoint assertion before tracking.

The first status call occurs after mise dot track, which saves the initial baseline. It does not test history.unsaved: null with no checkpoint. No other inspected test covers this state, so a regression that returns [] could escape.

A tracked directory whose scan stopped at the file or size limit leaves
every later file uncompared, so status now reports its unsaved changes

Turning `encrypt` on or off leaves an envelope on one side and a plain
file on the other. Status tried to decrypt both, failed on the plain
side, and reported the whole list as unknown. A toggle is now listed as
a change the next save records; only two envelopes are compared by
their decrypted contents.
