After you change [history.encryption] recipients, a save re-encrypts only the files it reads from disk. Encrypted files the save carries forward keep their old encryption: entries with autosave = false that the save doesn't name, and variants for other platforms. A machine added to the list then can't read them, and mise bootstrap --adopt fails with cannot unlock <path> until each file is edited and saved again.

mise dot save --re-encrypt saves as usual, then re-encrypts every file in the new checkpoint that was encrypted to a different recipient list:

mise dot save --re-encrypt
# mise history: re-encrypted 2 files to the current recipients
# mise history: saved checkpoint 3: re-encrypted 2 files to the current recipients
  • It re-encrypts the saved version of each file. A manual-save file's unsaved edits are never captured just to change its keys.
  • If this machine can't unlock some files, nothing is saved, and the error lists every one: cannot re-encrypt ~/.manual, ~/.other: no age identity on this machine unlocks them; nothing was saved. Run `mise dot save --re-encrypt` where they can be unlocked
  • With nothing to do, it prints history: every encrypted file already uses the current recipients and records no checkpoint.
  • Older checkpoints are not rewritten. As before, a machine added later can only read versions saved after the change.

The "Change recipients" section of the encryption docs now explains which files a plain save leaves behind and when to run --re-encrypt.

Reported in omacom/omarchy#3796 (comment).

Validation

New e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_save_re_encrypt:

  • After adding a second recipient, a plain save leaves the manual-save file's ciphertext unchanged, and adopting from a machine that has only the second key fails.
  • --re-encrypt without a usable identity fails, names both files and leaves history untouched.
  • After --re-encrypt, that machine adopts and gets the saved contents, while the unsaved edit stays only on disk.
  • A second --re-encrypt has nothing to do.

With the re-encrypt step disabled, these assertions fail. The existing encrypted-history e2e tests and the history:: unit tests pass.

Note

Medium Risk
Touches encrypted dotfiles history commits and recipient handling; failures are all-or-nothing, but a bad re-encrypt could block saves until keys are fixed.

Overview
Adds mise dot save --re-encrypt so dotfiles history can rotate age recipients for encrypted files that a normal save only carries forward (manual-save / autosave = false, other-platform variants, etc.).

A save still re-encrypts files it reads live; --re-encrypt runs an extra pass over the checkpoint tree that decrypts saved blobs and re-wraps them for [history.encryption] recipients without pulling unsaved disk edits. If any file cannot be unlocked locally, the operation aborts with a path list and no checkpoint is written. Shared history is saved before local-only history when re-encrypting so partial failure stays consistent.

Checkpoint capture wires Draft.re_encrypt, invokes sync::files::re_encrypt, and surfaces messages like β€œre-encrypted N files” or β€œevery encrypted file already uses the current recipients.” Docs, usage KDL, man page, and a new e2e test cover recipient changes and multi-machine adopt.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • mise dot save and mise dotfiles save now support --re-encrypt to update saved encrypted files to the current recipients, including files not captured in the save and variants for other platforms.
    • Re-encryption applies to saved versions only; unsaved edits are not saved. If any file cannot be unlocked, the save does not proceed and the affected files are listed.
  • Documentation
    • Updated command guidance and examples to explain encryption behavior when recipient settings change.

After a recipient change, a save re-encrypts only the files it captures.
Encrypted files it carries forward (`autosave = false` entries it does not
name, variants for other platforms) keep their old envelopes, so a machine
added to the recipients cannot adopt until each file is saved again.

`--re-encrypt` re-encrypts every stale envelope in the new checkpoint from
its saved version, never from live contents, records a checkpoint even when
no contents changed, and refuses without committing when this machine cannot
unlock some files, naming each one.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The dotfile save command adds --re-encrypt to update saved encrypted files for the current recipients. Checkpoint handling reports re-encryption separately from content changes and prevents saving when a file cannot be unlocked. Documentation and an end-to-end test describe and verify this behavior.

`mise dot save --re-encrypt` saved the local-only history before the
shared one, so a shared file it could not unlock still left a new local
checkpoint behind. With --re-encrypt the shared save runs first; the
local-only history holds no encrypted files, so it cannot fail there.

The report also counts files the save captured and encrypted afresh,
not only the saved versions it re-encrypted.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable β€” counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context β€” on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak β€” instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

3e82f66ba95f vs 0e2f572a1cf7 Β· measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
