🟡 Minor · Pass the lockfile checksum only when it belongs to the artifact being fetched. · node.rs:278-284
src/plugins/core/node.rs:278-284
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winPass the lockfile checksum only when it belongs to the artifact being fetched.
fetch_tarballserves both the precompiled binary and the source tarball (lockfile_install = Some("source")).lock_checksumreturns the checksum for the current platform, but it does not match the lockfile entry'surlandinstallfields against the requested artifact. If the binary returns 404, the source fallback can receive the binary checksum. A cached binary archive can then be restored to the source path, where source checksum validation fails. On a cache miss, the source archive does not match the binary pin, so the cache refuses to index it.
Pin the download only when the lock entry describes this artifact.

Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

…239) CI runs warn that a pinned action targets Node.js 20 and that the runner forces it onto Node.js 24. CI annotations cover only the workflows that ran, so this PR checks every workflow and local action instead. It reads `runs.using` from each pinned action's `action.yml` at its pinned SHA, including in `release.yml`, `release-please.yml`, `codeql.yml`, `codeql-swift.yml`, and the composite actions under `.github/actions/`. ## Node 20 audit `mlugg/setup-zig` was the only Node 20 action. Its latest release, v2.2.1, still declares `node20`, and its Node 24 upgrade ([mlugg/setup-zig#55](https://codeberg.org/mlugg/setup-zig/pulls/55) on Codeberg, where the GitHub repository mirrors from) has stalled. I checked the other setup-zig actions: `goto-bus-stop/setup-zig` is deprecated, `korandoru/setup-zig` is archived, and the two Node 24 ones (`vercel-labs/setup-zig`, `xyzzylabs/setup-zig`) are a few months old with 4 to 6 stars. This PR replaces it with Mise, which CI used before. CI left Mise because its `core:zig` fetched the `.minisig` only from the mirror that served the tarball, so one rate-limited mirror (HTTP 429) failed the job. Mise 2026.10.7 and later try the serving mirror, ziglang.org, and then every other mirror for the signature. Recent Mise releases also keep a content-addressed download store ([jdx/mise#14242](jdx/mise#14242)) that reuses an archive only when it matches the `mise.lock` checksum. Every other pinned action already declared `node24`, both at its current pin and at its new one. ## Changes - **Zig through Mise.** `.github/actions/setup-zig` now runs `mise install --locked zig` with its own `MISE_CACHE_DIR` under `RUNNER_TEMP`. It restores and saves that directory in the Actions cache, keyed by runner OS, architecture, Zig version, and Mise version, so the cache holds only Zig's archive (about 51 MB) and the mirror list. Mise still checks the lock checksum and the minisign signature on every install, so a stale or tampered entry cannot change what is installed. The action still exports `ZIG_GLOBAL_CACHE_DIR` and `ZIG_LOCAL_CACHE_DIR` under `RUNNER_TEMP`, which `restore-ghostty` and `save-ghostty` depend on. CI and release jobs now install Zig the same way; release jobs still use no Actions cache. The 4-minute bound and single retry on the Install Zig steps stay: a silent mirror costs Mise about two minutes, and a slow one is limited only by its 30-minute download timeout. - **Mise 2026.10.17.** Every `jdx/mise-action` step now pins mise 2026.10.17, the newest release outside the three-day cooldown. It ships the signed packslip that mise-action v5.2.1 and later require. - **Action pins.** `mise run actions:update` bumped `jdx/mise-action` from v5.2.0 to v5.2.2, `Swatinem/rust-cache` from v2.9.2 to v2.9.3, and `github/codeql-action` from v4.39.0 to v4.39.1, including the pin in the `prepare-release-candidate` composite action. pinact held back `jdx/mise-action` v5.2.3 because it was published inside the cooldown. - **zizmor online audits in CI.** `ci:workflows` now runs zizmor without `--offline` and CI passes `ZIZMOR_GITHUB_TOKEN`. Dependabot alerts skip SHA-pinned actions ([GitHub docs](https://docs.github.com/en/code-security/dependabot/dependabot-alerts/about-dependabot-alerts)), so zizmor's `known-vulnerable-actions` audit is the only advisory check these pins get. Without a token, zizmor silently falls back to offline mode, so the task fails in CI when no token is set. Locally it runs online when a token is available and offline otherwise. The pre-commit hook (`ci:workflows:staged`) stays offline. - **`docs/agents/ci.md`** records the Zig install and cache design, the zizmor token setup and how to clear an advisory finding, actionlint's linting gaps, and how to check an action's Node runtime. This supersedes #228, which bumps `jdx/mise-action` only to v5.2.1. ## Risks and follow-ups - **ziglang.org is now a hard dependency.** Every Mise Zig install, cached or not, fetches `ziglang.org/download/index.json` to find the tarball URL. If that fails, Mise's fallback builds the filename order Zig used before 0.14, so a ziglang.org outage fails the install. setup-zig did not need that file. This comes from reading Mise's source; I have not reproduced an outage. - **Cargo tools compile on every run.** The Mise action saves its install cache right after its own install step, so tools installed later never reach it. `cargo:cargo-deny` takes 79 seconds in Policy, and `cargo:cargo-auditable` plus `cargo:cargo-packager` take 140 seconds in Package macOS and again in release jobs. cargo-deny and cargo-auditable publish checksummed prebuilt binaries for every platform CI uses, so switching them to a binary backend would make them cacheable downloads. cargo-packager publishes no binaries. Changing where release tooling comes from is a separate decision. - **shellcheck is not pinned.** actionlint uses whichever `shellcheck` is on `PATH`: the Ubuntu 24.04 image's 0.9.0 in CI, and none on a machine without it. shellcheck is GPL-3.0, and `AGENTS.md` bans GPL dependencies without saying whether that covers dev-only tools. - **Composite action scripts are not linted.** actionlint lints only workflow files, so the `run:` scripts in `.github/actions/*/action.yml` get zizmor's security audits but no shell linting. - **An advisory can fail unrelated PRs.** A newly published advisory against a pinned action fails the Policy job on any open PR until the pin moves. The audit found no change needed in these areas: - CI has no path filters, so `ci:workflows` runs on every PR, including those that touch `.github`. - pinact covers the composite actions; it updated `prepare-release-candidate` here. - The cooldowns in `.pinact.yaml` (3 days), `zizmor.yml` (3 days), and `.github/dependabot.yml` (4 calendar days) match the policy in `AGENTS.md`, and `scripts/policy-alignment.test.ts` passes. - An actionlint config would add nothing yet. Every `runs-on` label is GitHub-hosted, and a config cannot enable shellcheck. ## Testing - With the mise 2026.10.17 binary and isolated data, state, and cache directories, a cold `mise install --locked zig` took 9 seconds and left a 51 MB cache directory. After wiping the installs and keeping the cache, a second install made no tarball request: it fetched only `index.json` and one `.minisig`, and installed Zig 0.17.0. - `mise run ci:workflows` passes with a token (online) and without one (offline). With `CI=1` and no token, the task exits 1 with the intended message. - I ran zizmor on a scratch workflow that SHA-pins `actions/download-artifact` v4.1.2, which has a published advisory. Online mode reports `known-vulnerable-actions` and offline mode reports nothing. - `bun test` passes for `scripts/policy-alignment.test.ts`, `scripts/ci-toolchain.test.ts`, and `scripts/ci-steps.test.ts` (17 tests). `mise run lint:docs` and `mise run lint:agents` also pass. - PR CI runs `ci.yml`, `codeql.yml`, and `codeql-swift.yml`, which exercise every bumped pin and the new Zig action on Linux x86_64, Linux aarch64, and macOS arm64. It cannot run `release.yml`, `release-please.yml`, or the `prepare-release-candidate` action. Their changes are the same pin and mise version bumps that CI exercises, and actionlint, zizmor (online), and `pinact --check --verify-comment` pass on them. Release jobs already installed Zig through the Mise action, so only the mise version changes there. --- _Written on behalf of jimeh by `claude-opus-5-5` using `Claude Code` via `T3 Code`._

Restoring a CI cache of installed tools is fast but unverified: mise can't check an installed tree against
mise.lock. Caching the download store instead is verified, and this PR makes that a supported setup (follow-up to the download cache in #14222).What changes
--lockedandparanoidreuse only pinned downloads. A kept download is used, or even stored, only when a pinned checksum will be checked against it afterwards. A restored or shareddownloads-cascan then save downloads but can't change what gets installed. Unpinned downloads (no checksum) skip the store in these modes.mise.lockto the download, and are installed from the stored file linked into place (a copy across devices). Node's source tarball is kept the same way and compiled each time. Source builds throughruby-build,python-buildandkerlfetch their own sources, so those are not kept.download_cache_max_size(default2GiB,MISE_DOWNLOAD_CACHE_MAX_SIZE,0for no limit) replaces the fixed 2 GiB cap. An unreadable value falls back to 2 GiB.Tools are unpacked on every run, so this is slower than restoring installs, and tools compiled from source still compile.
Tested. New unit tests for the size setting and for locked mode keeping only pinned downloads; a new e2e test (
test_http_locked_download_cache) that does a locked reinstall from the store alone with the server stopped, and refuses a changed stored file. The core-tool and http e2e tests pass; clippy with-D warningsis clean. I did not run the full e2e suite or the VitePress build.🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Note
Medium Risk
Changes install-time download and caching behavior across many core plugins and locked/paranoid modes; incorrect pinning logic could skip cache or accept wrong artifacts, though checksum verification remains the backstop for pinned installs.
Overview
Makes the download CAS safe to restore in CI under
--locked/paranoid, and adds a configurable cache size.Locked / paranoid behavior: Downloads are only stored or reused from
downloads-caswhen a pinned checksum will be verified afterward (cache_allowed). Unpinned downloads skip the store so a tampered shared cache cannot affect installs.Core tool installs: Precompiled archives (Go, Bun, Deno, Node, Python standalone, Java, Ruby, Erlang, Elixir, Swift, Zig, etc.) now use
download_file_storedwithlock_checksumso the lockfile pin applies only when its URL still matches the fetch. Zig additionally tries minisign signatures from several hosts when the tarball came from cache without hitting the original URL.Settings & docs: New
download_cache_max_size(default2GiB,0= unlimited) drives LRU eviction instead of a hard-coded cap. CI docs describe caching~/.cache/mise/downloads-caswithmise-actioncache: false, and lockfile docs explain why that is trustworthy compared to caching installs.Tests: Unit tests for max size and locked-only pinning; e2e for locked reinstall from store and rejection of tampered blobs; lockfile e2e forces
MISE_DOWNLOAD_CACHE=0where needed.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit ee51262. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
