mise dot diff now shows the differing hunks for directory copy entries, such as those created by [dotfile_groups.*] with mode = "copy". Previously it only printed the entry's summary line, so you couldn't tell what had drifted.

Before:

$ mise dot diff
dotfile differs: ~
  desired directory contents: ~/.config/dotfiles/home -> ~

After:

$ mise dot diff
dotfile differs: ~
  desired directory contents: ~/.config/dotfiles/home -> ~
  content differs: ~/.config/dotfiles/home/dot-config/app/a.conf -> ~/.config/app/a.conf
--- ~/.config/app/a.conf (current)
+++ ~/.config/dotfiles/home/dot-config/app/a.conf (desired)
@@ -1 +1 @@

A file missing from the target prints missing: <path>, and a symlink or directory in the way prints file type differs. Unchanged files are not listed. Template-mode directories still print only the summary line.

Reported in discussion 14330.

Added e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_diff_directory_copy, which passes. Clippy and the wider e2e suite were not run.

Note

Low Risk
Changes are confined to dotfile diff/display and directory-copy state checks, with no auth or data-path impact; behavior is covered by a new e2e test.

Overview
mise dot diff now drills into directory copy dotfile entries (e.g. [dotfile_groups.*] with mode = "copy") instead of stopping at the single β€œdesired directory contents” line.

For copy mode when the target is a directory or absent, it walks each mapped file and prints per-file output: unified hunks for content drift (via a refactored print_file_diff), missing: for absent targets, file type differs when a symlink, directory, or file blocks the path, and readable/not-accessible messages instead of hard failures on permission errors. check_copy_dir uses the same permission-denied handling so status checks stay consistent with diff output. Unchanged files are omitted; template directory entries still only show the summary line.

An e2e script test_dotfiles_diff_directory_copy covers drift hunks, missing files, unreadable targets, symlinked target dirs, inaccessible parent directories, and a file blocking a subdirectory path.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • mise dot diff now reports directory-copy differences per file when the target is an existing directory or does not exist. Results identify missing files and file-type mismatches, show content changes for readable files, and flag files that cannot be read.
    • Directory comparisons also work through a symlinked target directory.
    • Diff output labels desired content more clearly, including content supplied inline.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Directory-copy dotfile diffs now report per-file differences for directory targets. The diff handles missing, mismatched, differing, and unreadable files. An end-to-end test checks these cases and a symlinked target directory.

Changes

Directory-copy dotfile diffs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-file directory-copy diff reporting
src/system/files.rs
Directory-copy diffs report missing targets, targets of the wrong type, differing readable files, and unreadable files. Identical files are skipped. Content-diff rendering uses source paths when available and the target path otherwise.
End-to-end diff coverage
e2e/cli/test_dotfiles_diff_directory_copy
The test checks unchanged and differing files, missing files and directories, unreadable-file reporting when run as non-root, and comparison through a symlinked target directory.
