mise bootstrap elevated only with sudo. On hosts that don't ship it, such as secureblue (which removes sudo in favor of systemd's run0) or systems using doas, it stopped with sudo not found. Run as root: …. The only workarounds were copying the printed command or running all of mise as root.

mise now picks the elevation command itself:

$ mise bootstrap packages apply --manager dnf # no sudo installed, run0 present
$ run0 dnf install -y gimp
  • With nothing configured, mise uses the first of sudo, run0, doas found on PATH. If none is installed it still asks you to run the command as root.

  • New setting system_packages.elevate_with (MISE_SYSTEM_PACKAGES_ELEVATE_WITH) pins the command:

    [settings]
    system_packages.elevate_with = "run0"
  • system_packages.sudo = false still disables elevation entirely.

This applies to every step that elevates: apk, apt, dnf, pacman, zypper, the login shell, accounts, files, services, the firewall and Compose.

The existing guarantees hold for each command: the full command line is logged before it runs, and without a TTY mise first checks for passwordless elevation (sudo -n, doas -n, run0 --no-ask-password) and otherwise prints the exact command to run by hand. Other commands, such as pkexec, are accepted but only used in an interactive terminal, since mise has no non-interactive check for them.

The Homebrew cask shim is macOS-only and still calls sudo directly.

Tested with a unit test for the per-command non-interactive checks. I have not run it against a real run0 or doas.

Closes #14280

Note

Medium Risk
Changes how root is obtained for package/bootstrap commands; mistakes could break installs or mis-handle passwords in CI, though behavior mirrors existing sudo policies.

Overview
Adds configurable privilege elevation for system package and bootstrap steps so hosts without sudo can use run0 or doas automatically or via system_packages.elevate_with (MISE_SYSTEM_PACKAGES_ELEVATE_WITH).

src/system/sudo.rs now picks an β€œelevator” (configured value, else first of sudo / run0 / doas on PATH), builds elevated argv accordingly (run0 --setenv=…, doas -n / run0 --no-ask-password when non-interactive), and improves failures with copy-paste manual commands and root_fallback when the tool is missing. Docs, settings.toml, and schema/mise.json describe the new setting and fallback order. The Homebrew cask shim path still requires sudo only (subprocess_mode unchanged).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • System-package operations can use a configured command to obtain root privileges. Otherwise, mise selects the first available option from sudo, run0, or doas, with sudo as a fallback.
    • Noninteractive operations use supported no-prompt options for sudo, run0, and doas; other configured commands require an interactive terminal.
    • The setting to disable privilege elevation remains available.
  • Documentation
    • Updated guidance on privilege-elevation fallbacks and selecting a command.

mise bootstrap elevated only with sudo, so hosts without it (secureblue
ships run0, others use doas) stopped with "sudo not found". mise now
falls back to run0, then doas, when sudo is not on PATH, and
system_packages.elevate_with pins a specific command.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Walkthrough

System-package elevation now supports a configured command or automatic selection of sudo, run0, or doas. Elevated command paths use the selected tool for invocation, availability checks, and noninteractive handling.

Changes

System-package elevation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Elevation setting and tool selection
settings.toml, schema/mise.json, docs/bootstrap/packages/index.md, src/system/sudo.rs
system_packages.elevate_with configures the elevation command. When unset, selection checks sudo, run0, then doas, and falls back to sudo. The schema and documentation describe the setting and fallback.
Elevated command invocation
src/system/sudo.rs, src/system/packages/aur.rs
Elevated command paths use the selected tool. Noninteractive doas and run0 calls receive their respective flags. Environment handling and interactive output execution account for the selected tool. Eligible failures can include a manual retry hint. AUR installation checks for sudo availability.
Availability and failure handling
src/system/sudo.rs
Availability checks and errors identify the selected tool. Noninteractive checks probe sudo or recognize supported no-prompt flags. Root fallback conversion and tests cover command forms and tool flags.

The change adds run0 and doas support alongside sudo for elevated bootstrap steps. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains, though real run0 and doas execution was not tested.

Probing `doas -n true` rejected hosts whose rule allows only the requested
command. doas and run0 now get -n / --no-ask-password on the actual
command. The interactive `-v` pre-auth also uses the pinned sudo path.

Handle captured Compose failures inside the manual-hint boundary.

When unattended Compose uses doas or run0 and authorization fails, sudo::output returns an Output with a nonzero status. checked_stdout then creates the error outside attempt, so the error omits the manual retry command. Check the captured status inside attempt.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable β€” counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context β€” on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak β€” instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

2467844a13d3 vs 49cf9a3e78ed Β· measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.
