feat(doctor): flag a mise-shim.exe template older than mise - #14586
Conversation
Embed the mise release in mise-shim.exe as a newline-terminated `mise-shim-version:<release>` tag, read it back from the template that "exe" shims are copied from, and report a template older than mise (or one without the tag) from `mise doctor` as a problem and from `mise reshim` as a warning. Rebuilding shims from a stale template keeps the old launcher, so a reshim could never fix the loop in discussion #14494. Problem
On Windows, "exe" shims are byte copies of the
mise-shim.exethat ships besidemise.exe. An update that replacesmise.exebut leaves an oldermise-shim.exebehind keeps producing shims with the old launcher:mise reshim --forcecopies whatever template it finds, and nothing said so. In discussion #14494 a winget install had mise 2026.10.11 next to amise-shim.exefrom 2026.7.0, which predates the shim's recursion guard, so a cargo command wrapper looped forever throughmise xno matter how often shims were rebuilt. The.versionmarker in the shims directory did not help: it records the mise that ran reshim, not the template the shims came from. What changes
mise-shim.exenow carries the mise release it shipped with, as amise-shim-version:<release>tag mise can read back from the file. The release comes from the workspaceCargo.toml, not themise-shimcrate's own version, which does not move with releases. When the template beside mise is older than mise, or has no tag at all (every
mise-shim.exebefore this change):mise doctorlists it as a problem.mise reshim(includingmise reshim --forceand the reshims that follow a tool install) warns once per run, and still rebuilds the shims. Both say the same thing:
For an untagged template the first line ends with
it has no version tag, so it predates this check. Nothing is reported outsidewindows_shim_mode = "exe", when no template exists (that case already warns), or when the template is the same release as mise or newer.mise self-updatealready refreshesmise-shim.exenext to mise; it copies the whole file, so the tag comes with it.Validation
Unit tests cover the tag scan (a current tag, an older tag, the prefix without a version, an unterminated tag, and bytes without a tag) and the staleness comparison. The tag's presence and its terminating newline were checked in
mise-shimbinaries built for Linux,x86_64-pc-windows-gnu, and the release profile.cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warningspasses. Themise doctorandmise reshimpaths themselves are#[cfg(windows)]and were not run here: the Windows CI buildsmise.exeandmise-shim.exefrom the same tree, so they exercise the "template is current" case.Fixes the diagnosis gap from #14494. Requires a mise release built after this change on both sides: an older
mise-shim.exeis reported as untagged, which is the intended outcome.AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-fable-5-1; version: 2.1.299.

Medium Risk
Windows-only shim/doctor behavior with new binary embedding, but it only surfaces diagnostics when the launcher template is outdated and does not change non-exe shim modes.
Overview
Windows exe shims are copies of
mise-shim.exe; if an update refreshesmise.exebut not the shim template, mise reshim --forcekeeps propagating the old launcher. This PR embeds amise-shim-version:<release>tag inmise-shim.exeat build time (from the workspaceCargo.toml, with a shared prefix asset so mise and the shim crate stay aligned).mise scans that tag on the template beside
mise.exeand compares it to the running release. A missing or older tag triggers amise doctorerror and a one-timemise reshimwarning (reshim still runs). Docs now explain that Windows shims copymise-shim.exeand how to fix a stale template via the installer ormise self-update, thenmise reshim --force.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit f8fece9.
