Installing Rust through a RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER / RUSTUP_UPDATE_ROOT mirror (e.g. panamax) on a network that cannot reach GitHub failed with a DNS error, because listing remote versions always queried GitHub's rust-lang/rust releases first.

With a mirror configured, a failed release listing now logs a warning and falls back to the stable, beta and nightly channels, so mise install rust@stable can proceed through the mirror. Numbered versions such as 1.80.0 still need the GitHub listing. Without a mirror the error is unchanged.

[env]
RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER = "https://panamax.internal"
RUSTUP_UPDATE_ROOT = "https://panamax.internal/rustup"

[tools]
rust = "stable"

Fixes #14652

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: unavailable.

Note

Low Risk
Scoped to Rust remote version listing and cache invalidation for degraded/empty lists; non-mirror failure modes are unchanged.

Overview
Rust installs behind a RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER mirror no longer fail version resolution when GitHub is unreachable: release listing errors are warned and the tool still advertises stable, beta, and nightly from the mirror path. Without a mirror, GitHub listing failures behave as before.

Remote version caching now understands “degraded” listings. Backends can return a flag from _list_remote_versions_checked when the list may be incomplete; the shared listing path skips caching (and clears cache on empty or degraded results) so a later retry can pick up full release data once GitHub is available again.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Prevented incomplete Rust release listings from being retained in the cache when a configured mirror is available but the release source cannot be reached. Empty listings are also cleared from the cache.
    • Without a configured mirror, release listing errors continue to be reported.

📝 Walkthrough

The Rust plugin now handles GitHub release-listing failures differently when a distribution mirror is configured. It returns an empty degraded listing, and the backend clears cached listings marked degraded.

Changes: Rust mirror release listing

Degraded listing contract and cache handling

The Backend trait adds a degraded-listing status method. The backend clears cached remote listings when they are empty or marked degraded.

When a mirror is configured, a GitHub release-listing failure produces an empty listing marked degraded. Without a mirror, the error propagates. Tests cover these cases and successful listings.

With a Rust mirror configured, installs of channels like stable now proceed when GitHub is unreachable. In an uncommon case, two projects using different mirrors resolve Rust at the same time. A channels-only list can then stay cached, hiding numbered versions until the cache expires or is cleared. Resolving rust@latest also retries the unreachable GitHub request and shows the warning twice. Both issues are bounded and suit follow-up, though the cache issue is worth fixing first.

Explanation

Issue [#14652] requires Rust installation to proceed through a configured mirror when GitHub is unreachable. In src/plugins/core/rust.rs, a failed GitHub release listing is converted to a degraded result when RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER is configured. The backend logs a warning, keeps the channel-based versions, and preserves the existing error when no mirror is configured. src/backend/mod.rs prevents degraded results from remaining in the remote-version cache. The added unit test covers mirrored failure, unmirrored failure, and successful listing.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue [#14652]. The shared Backend method and cache clearing support the Rust fallback by preventing a partial version list from becoming authoritative. The Rust state flag, warning, and focused unit test directly support degraded mirror handling. No unrelated behavior or files appear in the reviewed diff.

With `RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER` set (for example to a panamax mirror), mise
still queried GitHub's `rust-lang/rust` releases every time it listed
rust versions, so installs on networks that only reach the mirror warned
or failed. Fixes #15307.

```toml
[env]
RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER = "https://mirror.example.com/rust"
[tools]
rust = "latest"   # now resolves to the stable channel via the mirror
```

With a mirror configured:

- mise no longer contacts GitHub to list rust versions; only the
`stable`, `beta` and `nightly` channels are listed.
- `latest` resolves to `stable`.
- A numbered version such as `1.80.0` is confirmed by a HEAD request for
`dist/channel-rust-1.80.0.toml` on the mirror. If the mirror lacks that
manifest, the version is reported as not found rather than falling back
to GitHub.

Without a mirror, behavior is unchanged. This replaces the earlier
fallback that tried GitHub first and warned on failure (#14662).

Validation: rust unit tests and `cargo clippy -- -D warnings` pass. Not
tested against a real mirror.

> **Overview**
> When **`RUSTUP_DIST_SERVER`** is set, mise **stops listing
`rust-lang/rust` releases from GitHub** and builds the remote version
list from mirror channel manifests plus the stable release parsed from
the mirror’s **`stable`** channel file.

when the mirror also serves **`dist/channel-rust-<version>.toml`**;
otherwise it falls back to installing the **`stable`** channel. **Exact

HEAD fails) and error if the manifest is missing instead of consulting
GitHub.

Mirror mode only exposes one numbered release for prefix selectors and
**`minimum_release_age`**, which the Rust docs now describe.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Bug Fixes**
* Rust version listings now include the stable release reported by a
configured mirror. Requests for `latest` use that release, falling back
to the `stable` channel when it is unavailable.
* Exact Rust release requests are checked against the corresponding
release manifest when a mirror is configured. Without a mirror, release
listings continue to use GitHub.
* **Documentation**
* Clarified that mirror-based version discovery is limited to the stable
release, affecting older releases, prefix selectors, and minimum release
age settings.
