docs(config): add an interactive mise.toml editor and playground - #14673
Conversation
A CodeMirror editor that knows mise's config schema: hovering a key or value shows its type, description, choices and default with a link to the reference; completion offers the keys a table takes, sections and values; and syntax errors, unknown keys (with what was likely meant), values of the wrong kind and deprecated keys show as you type. It picks a table's shape by the same rules as `mise config explain`. The playground at /configuration/playground shows it, and any `toml` fence with `editor` in its info string becomes one. The editor and schema load only when a page shows an editor. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- An escape such as `\U00110000` no longer stops hover, lint and completion; smol-toml reports it as a syntax error. - Completing a value inside quotes replaces the closing quote too, instead of leaving `"never""`. - A numeric key such as `404` under `[settings]` is checked like any other key; only array positions are skipped. - A new line inside a multi-line array completes items, not the table's keys. - An editor that finishes loading after the page has left is destroyed. The editor's scan skipped a fixed four or eight characters after `\u` or `\U`, so `"\u"` ran past its closing quote and hid the next line's key from hover, lint and completion. It now reads only the hex digits there. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Entire-Checkpoint: 01M57KX3RX6ZXCJK6CCQW4255E
<!-- entire-trail-link-start --> https://entire.io/gh/jdx/mise/trails/887 <!-- entire-trail-link-end --> The mise.toml hover from #14673 only worked on the playground, so examples like the ones on [dotfiles/groups](https://mise.jdx.dev/dotfiles/groups.html) were plain code blocks. Now hovering a key or value in any mise.toml example says what it is and links to the reference. This applies to every `toml` and `mise-toml` fence that shows a mise config (about 800 blocks): no title, a label such as `[Table]`, or a title naming a mise config file such as `[mise.toml]` or `[~/.config/mise/config.toml]`. It uses the same rules as the schema conformance test, so these stay plain code blocks: - titles that are not mise configs (`mise.lock`, `fnox.toml`, `bin/tool`, ...) - blocks with a `<!-- schema: skip -->` or `<!-- schema: invalid -->` line above them - blocks fenced as ```` ```toml plain ```` Details: - The examples are read-only and show no problem markers or completions; ```` ```toml editor ```` still gives an editable one. The file title stays above the block, and code groups keep switching tabs. - Each example has two icon buttons in its corner, shown on hover (always on touch screens): one opens the example in the [playground](https://mise.jdx.dev/configuration/playground.html), where it can be edited and shared, and one copies it. - Pages have hundreds of examples, so each editor loads only when it scrolls near the screen; until then (or without scripts) the config shows as plain text. - Trade-off: the editor does not highlight the bash and KDL embedded in `run` and `usage` fields the way the site's regular mise-toml highlighting does. The playground page now puts the editor first, with a shorter explanation below it. Verified with a full `vitepress build` and headless Chromium: hovering `[dotfile_groups]` on groups.html and `[hooks]` on hooks.html shows the card. I did not click through every page. π€ Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) *AI-assisted β Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: unavailable.* <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Recognized TOML and `mise-toml` configuration examples now appear as compact, read-only editors by default. The docs gain a mise.toml playground: an editor that knows mise's config schema. Paste or write a
mise.toml, and it explains each key and catches mistakes as you type. The same editor can replace any TOML example in the docs. What it does
[settings], the settings page. Hovering a value highlights which of the allowed choices it is.[,true/falseand the allowed choices for a value, and backend prefixes such as"github:under[tools].jobzβ "did you mean jobs?"); values of the wrong kind (hide = "yes"β "expected boolean"); and deprecated keys, struck through. The editor uses the same rules as
mise config explainto decide which shape a table is in. For example, portbeside a daemon'sprojectis reported as unread, while it is fine on a daemon that runs a command. Its messages match what mise prints. In docs pages
Any
tomlblock can become an editor by addingeditorto the fence. Addreadonlyto keep the hover help without editing, andshareto put the config in the page's URL:The block is still a
tomlblock, soschema_matches_parserchecks it like every other example. The playground is the only page that uses it for now. Existing examples are unchanged, since most are short excerpts in tabbed code groups. The reference page now links to the playground. How it works
docs/.vitepress/mise-toml/scan.tsreads a mise.toml well enough to say where each key and value is and what key path it has, even while it is half written.smol-tomlchecks the syntax.docs/.vitepress/mise-toml/schema.tsreadsschema/mise.json. It ports the shape-matching rules ofsrc/cli/config/explain.rs(fits, shapes chosen by the table's own keys, known keys, the "did you mean" distance). The reference page's data loader now takes its type labels and placeholder names from this module, and its output is byte-identical.docs/.vitepress/mise-toml/editor.tsis the CodeMirror 6 editor: TOML highlighting, hover cards, completion and lint.docs/components/mise-toml-editor.vueshows the config as plain text until the editor loads, so the page reads without scripts. The editor and the schema load only when a page shows an editor: about 130 KB and 39 KB gzipped. Other pages are unaffected.
A link from a hover card to a key that the reference lists once under "Same keys as" now lands on the nearest key above it on the reference page, instead of nowhere.
Validation
node --test docs/.vitepress/mise-toml/*.test.ts), now part ofdocs:build. They cover scanning, hover, problems and completion against the real schema, including invalid escapes, numeric keys, items of multi-line arrays and completing inside quotes.docs/, the editor reports nothing on all 631. The four blocks it does flag are other TOML files: a pitchfork config and a tool stub.vitepress preview:mise run docs:build(including the link check),tsc --strictover the new modules, oxfmt and markdownlint.AI-assisted β Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: 2.1.299.

Overview
Adds a browser-based mise.toml playground and an optional schema-aware editor for docs examples, all driven by
schema/mise.jsonwith the same shape-matching rules asmise config explain.Docs integration: Fenced blocks tagged
toml editor(with optionalreadonly/share) render aMiseTomlEditorVue component instead of a static code block. The playground page usesshareso configs can be encoded in the URL. Sidebar and reference copy point readers to the playground.Editor stack: New
docs/.vitepress/mise-toml/modules scan partial TOML (scan.ts), validate and complete against the JSON schema (schema.ts,analyze.ts), and wire CodeMirror 6 for highlighting, hover cards, lint, and completions (editor.ts).smol-tomlhandles full-file syntax errors. The reference data loader now imports shared helpers fromschema.ts(behavior unchanged).UX fixes: Deep links from editor hover cards to the config reference resolve to the nearest listed ancestor when the exact anchor is not on the page.
