Problem

dotnet@lts and dotnet@sts were not recognised, so you had to look up which .NET channel is current and write dotnet@10 yourself, then bump it by hand when the next LTS ships (discussion 10273). Node hardcodes its lts aliases, but a hardcoded .NET table would go stale with every release.

Change

[tools]
dotnet = "lts" # the newest SDK in the current LTS channel (10.0.x today)

lts and sts now follow Microsoft's release index. They pick the newest channel of that type that is in active or maintenance support, so previews, go-live releases and end-of-life channels are skipped, then resolve to an SDK in that channel. mise latest dotnet@lts gives 10.0.402 and dotnet@sts gives 9.0.319 against today's index.

To make that possible, Backend gets an async resolve_dynamic_alias hook (default: None) that Config::resolve_alias asks after config-defined and built-in aliases. A [tool_alias.dotnet.versions] entry named lts still wins. The channel list is cached under the remote-versions cache duration, so repeat resolutions don't hit the network. Runtime-only installs still need an exact version.

Channel versions are compared numerically as major.minor inside the dotnet plugin only; no version ordering is added elsewhere.

Testing

Unit tests cover channel selection, and the new e2e/core/test_dotnet_channel_aliases checks both aliases, that ls-remote dotnet lts stays inside the resolved channel, and that a user alias takes precedence. clippy with -D warnings is clean.

AI-assisted β€” Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: unavailable.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes shared alias resolution for every backend (default no-op) and makes dotnet lts/sts depend on remote release metadata and cache behavior for version selection.

Overview
Adds dotnet@lts and dotnet@sts so SDK version requests track Microsoft’s current LTS/STS channels without hand-updating major versions. Resolution uses the releases index: newest channel of that type in active or maintenance support (skipping preview, go-live, and EOL), then picks an SDK in that channel; [tool_alias.dotnet.versions] still overrides built-in names. Runtime-only installs are unchanged and still need exact versions.

Introduces an async resolve_dynamic_alias hook on Backend, consulted from Config::resolve_alias after config and static aliases. The dotnet plugin implements it with a cached channel list (including offline use of stale cache), plus select_channel unit tests and an e2e script for alias shape, ls-remote scoping, offline behavior, and user alias precedence. Docs document the new request forms and behavior.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added dotnet@lts and dotnet@sts aliases to select the newest .NET SDK release in the matching channel with active or maintenance support. Preview, go-live, and end-of-life channels are excluded.
    • Matching aliases in your configuration take precedence. Cached channel information can resolve aliases offline. These aliases apply to SDK installs; runtime-only installs still require an exact version.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the .NET version selection guide with details about the aliases, supported channels, and runtime-only install requirements.

πŸ“ Walkthrough

Backend alias resolution now supports dynamic aliases. The .NET plugin uses this support to resolve lts and sts to the newest supported channel versions. Tests and documentation cover channel filtering and configured alias precedence.

Changes: .NET channel aliases

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dynamic alias resolution
src/backend/mod.rs, src/config/mod.rs
The backend trait adds resolve_dynamic_alias. Config::resolve_alias calls it after configured plugin aliases and static backend aliases.
.NET channel selection
src/plugins/core/dotnet.rs, e2e/core/test_dotnet_channel_aliases, docs/lang/dotnet.md
The .NET plugin resolves lts and sts from active or maintenance channels, selects the numerically newest matching version, and caches channel metadata. Tests check resolution, channel filtering, offline cache use, and configured alias precedence. Documentation describes supported aliases and their limitations.
