Steam Link

Steam Link

Steam Link app registry (or "app store") ?
Is there a centralized location where one might find a list of steam link apps ? I've been struggling to find anything beyond this forum.

Current;y there isn't really anything like that afaik.
Huge potential for Steam if this ever does get some well-deserved attention.
I'm in the process of developing a "Store app" at the moment. Right now its nothing more then a window with a simple list in it but more is on the way ;)
If anyone wants to discuss or take part in the project, either put a comment here or send me a PM

Are you hosting it on github? I'm kinda interested to see how people are creating apps for the Steam Link.
Not currently but I will when it's more then a few reows of code :P
Any progress ?
I got my link today, not tested yet.
I found this post while searching if anyone start this kind of project. I'm a dev and I was thinking about start something like that. So if you need help ..

Wich API do you use ,OpenGL, Qt or SDL ? I'm more a Qt guy, but I have no idea actually of the possibility on this device, I mean, I don't know if ALL the Qt features work on the link or not. I starting the exploration of the SDK today. I think I will be ready to start working on a project in a week or less.

Hi ze0 :)
I'm using Qt but I must say that I'm terible at front-end programing. I'm more of a back-end guy, hahaha.
Due to the holidays and some other project I'm currently at a standstill but I would love to do a colaboration of sort :)

painejake and I over on https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam_Link/ have started a little repo for compiled packages https://github.com/painejake/steamlink-bin

I can't say I'm any good at (or particularly know how to) program, but would love to help out in keeping packages up to date.

I tested your package, kodi crash about 30-45sec after launch, weird but I didn't search the log actually so I will create an issue on github when I have more elements. And I lose 2hours on playing tyrian yesterday ><. I really like this steam link.
Keep this repo alive it's a good thing :)

ThrustVector:
I have some time issue ^^" and didn't start compiling anything for test.
Well, do we start a Slack/Hipchat/Mattermost/Discord or other chat tool for talking about our ideas and skill for the project ?

ze0: Yhe either that or we just discuss it here and then the community have the chance to give its toughts as well?
Have to warn you though, my schedule is really crammed with stuff right now. Depending on how we decide that the back-end of the "app store" should work, I can provide the project with any needs for server applications (web, ftp, sql etc.)
During initial development I don't see any problems with me hosting the back-end services on my server at home. Later on when people are really string to use this app we just move it to a suitable VPS.
sorry for the Ten day silence ><

Well ok
So here is my idea

A Two parts project
A server part where there is all the app stored ready to be download, with a REST api.
And on the other part the package to install on the Link, who display information from the API, it have to be compatible with every controller and keyboard that the Link accept.

You can download or get information on a package trough the API, why not a comment and notation system with possibility to send message for bug report.

I think also of a submission system, people who create package can submit package through a web interface, with name description screenshots.

We need also a admin area, where we can manage everything, for example removing spam/bot comment.

For the community part, we could use the Steam OpenID, like that it's secure for everything and we don't have to worry about storing password of peoples.

We need to take decision about adult content if it comes to the Link, should we ban it, or authorise it with an option

If we want to go to next level, we can create a build system, where peoples upload the source code of the project and a server build the package. but I maybe go to far with this ^^'

About skills part, I'm a python developer in everyday life, I know other languages but this is my main. I'm a bit slow when I develop in c++.
So during the next days I will try to see what are the possibility for me with python on the link, since python already have a lot of things about sdl and controllers I'm not to worried.
(Python also do QT stuff :p)

So that is what you had in mind ? I wait for your comment on what I say & other ideas :)

I wonder if the apps have root access... anyone knows?
You are talking about comments and bugreporting. Do you mean that it should be possible directly in the app store on the link or was that meant to be a part of the community webpage?

Regarding package information and such, I was thinking of a really simple "api" where we just use html/xml/json to provide package information from the server-side to the client.
Storing package information and such in a SQL-database (MySQL) and generating a xml or other suitable page that the client can fetch and collect that information from. Then having a simple ftp on the side wich hosts the actual packages (applications)

I believe we should start very small and just get the core parts in place before expanding outwards with comment-sections, integrated bug reporting and a community.

Comming to my programming skills, I have to say that they are somewhat constrained. C/C++ is the language that I have done some basic development in. Mostly though, I'm more at home with web-development so maybe a server/client developent split is in place?
I mainly work as a network-engineer but also have some web-developent on the side. Can't say i'm a great front-end developer of any sort but I will do my best in the meentime until hopefully someone with more expertice in html/css/JS comes along on this project :D

I can as a start put up the server services (database, ftp, web) when we have decided on a approach for the project.
Ok, so we start with this basics and maybe go to the next level after :) I'm ok with that, sometimes I want to do too much ^^

So, just to be clear,

on the server side:
a SQL database
a ftp with the stored package
a simple api witch provide information (I like JSON but I you have other preferences I'm listening), [title, description, author, last update date, path in the FTP]

on the client side:
an ui witch display information of the small api
and connect to the ftp to download the selected package
and finally install the package in the right place

If you are more on backend stuff we can work individually on a chosen side.
I'm ok with both but If we decide to chose a part I prefer the client side.

(I'm not very clear about my abilities :/ I'm mainly a python developer, and I work on web based project very often, I have a good experience on web development, but I also do non-web application for server and desktop)

And I will try to come here more often.

Yes I'm up for a split where you can take the client side and I work on the server side.
Will you create a repository on GitHub or how do we work with the client proejct?

And JSON is all fine by me. PHP has a built-in json_encode function so it will be supereasy to convert the data from the database to a JSON-string.

We should deside on exactly wich data to include in the JSON/api.
offcourse title, description, author and path in the FTP. Not sure if last update date is needed but we'll see.
Also I think we need filesize and a checksum (for easy version control)
