Steam Link

Steam Link

some strange limitation and future suggest about framerate option.
Steam Remote Play/Steam Link got function that
'force lower resolution from host device to current connected client side resolution'
this one working great.
skip gpu scaling during encode frame, that make it less latency in whole process.
also audio mute from host side, match between HDR-SDR working great and no issues.

but in current Frame Limitation options, it got some strange 'sync' behavior that lower the streaming framerate even in it has enough spare performence for streaming it.

as example, i'm using 4k 144~160hz display that support HDR 10bit(either static or dynamic trough either DP or HDMI)
and current common TV products either LEDLCD or OLED, mostly using standard 120hz
few 2023~2024 models support 144hz via 'non standard but push in bandwidth', and recent few 2025 models support squeeze to 165hz without overdrive pannel cause it's OLED (trough DSC over HDMI? i guess?)

when i'd streaming my guest old standard 1080p60hz TV trough chromecast with google play TV(2020) model,
whole streaming trying to fit framerate sync as 36(1/4 value of my host 144 framerate with VRR on state)
i'd try to manually limit 60frame and Auto mode from host side steam remote play settings, but there's no proper way to fix it unless you force manually drop down your monitor's screen refreshrate to 60hz level.

but real problem start from here, there's tons of displays users using for PC.
as example my LG 27GP95R model got three refreshrate mode.
(when DSC off)120hz 94.98hz 60hz
(when DSC on)144hz 94.98hz 60hz
(when DSC on with Overdrive display) 160hz 94.98hz 60hz
(even same Resolution same Vertical Hz, different Horizontal Hz depends on HDMI or DP port)

if there's no proper horizontal frenquency or proper profile wasn't exist in user's display from the first, then steam remote play can't designate the proper 'suggested refresh rate'
this issue won't be serious at this rate, but after 5~10 years later, display EDID and firmware can't store and handle all those display profile from products, that somehow they will throw out old compatibility profile just like old legacy display functions from gpu drivers.

even if steam develop and add function that 'force lower refreshrate close to guest client side display refreshrate' to try to suggest it, it will always slight not match with both display's physical timing.
and you were already know some poor ported or hardcoded old games that forcing 60.00 or 59.94 that makes slight timing differency totally tearing the frames in whole game play.

i'm not much expert at current windows 10/11 screen processing behavior, but as far as i'd known in current windows limitations, without plug dummy dongle to make 'virtual display profile', couldn't solve those slight missmatch refreshrate issues on 'non standard refreshrates between remote host & client' (Unless force to all same low 60hz like remote office jobs)

anyway i want to suggest is

1. at least temporary need a function that 'force refreshrate of host as guest refreshrate' that same thing like force fit resolution option we got.

2. many VRR behavior trough TV, Tablet, Phone, PC Monitor need to test from Valve in higher prioriety.
not just SteamDeck OLED and Remote Play aspect, many further gaming device and game sw will consider those display tech support.
and Valve need to Research&Develop those for videogame developers and customers.

3. in current Bandwidth limitations, some expensive display bring back old method that manually switch HighResolution LowRefreshrate and LowResolution HighRefreshrate mode from button on display stand.
(cause pannel can provide both in nowdays by OLED tech but bandwidth were always later by VESA and HDMI standardrizations)
I'm not sure steam link and remote play service tested those kind 'sudden display mode change recorgnization during in Streaming' or not.
but many modern OS even in phones are dynamically change those display mode and support from OS.
i think research and test on those kind things are 'not essential' but got a potential to test.

thanks for long term support on this Link and Remote Play services.
