Mouse lag in Android app only, not a network issue
This is a bug report for the Steam Link app for Android regarding using a mouse specifically.

TL;DR version:
  • The rendered mouse lags horribly on the Android client device, despite me being able to see it continue to move smoothly on the host PC
  • Streaming to the Android app is perfectly fine, aside from the mouse behavior
  • Happens with both a Bluetooth mouse paired to the Android client and with a mouse connected into the host PC.
  • Happens even in the Big Picture menus, not just in games.
  • Reproduced on multiple different Android devices.
  • Does not happen when streaming to Steam Link/Remote Play running on a non-Android device, such as the old Steam Link hardware, an iPad, or a laptop.
  • While the mouse is lagging, everything else (display, keyboard, controller) continues to perform perfectly smooth, which tends to suggest it is not a question of the network-related throughput/latency issues that people have with game streaming.

When I use the Android to play games that use a mouse (mouse connected to host PC, not to the client device running the Steam Link app), the streamed mouse cursor is horrifically laggy, despite working smoothly as usual on the host PC.

This has been reproduced on multiple Android devices running the Steam Link Android app (a TV (running Android TV as its main OS) via ethernet, an Nvidia Shield (Android TV) via ethernet, a Samsung Galaxy S21 phone), and all experience the same issue. Streaming to other non-Android devices (such as a laptop on wifi) do not have this mouse issue.

In Doom Eternal, even over wifi, I'm getting 15 ms of display latency according to the debug graph overlay, at full 60 FPS. Not a network issue. Not an input latency issue, keyboard and controller inputs are perfectly fine. Seems to be specifically about how the Steam Link app on Android renders the remote mouse cursor.

This is still happening. I've tried it now with a Windows laptop as the host, same issue, which rules out it being my gaming PC encoding something incorrectly.

A bluetooth mouse paired to my Nvidia Shield exhibits the lag issue in Steam Link only (and not in other apps on the Shield), which seems to suggest the Steam Link app is having issues with local mouse cursor rendering in general, regardless of whether the mouse is connected to the client Android device or the host PC.
I am also having this issue and searching for a solution today and yesterday it seems to be completely unaddressed by Steam and there's not a terribly large number of user-suggested fixes but I think at this point I've tried all but one.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is installing Sunshine on the host PC. Apparently it overrides whatever Steam is doing wrong and allows for the mouse cursor to function smoothly. Sorry for lack of better details, I was hoping to find a solution that didn't require more software I'd have to research but I think it's going to come to that. It pairs with Moonlight on the client but I don't know about that yet as the two of them will be the next thing I look into.

Sunshine / Moonlight will give you a better experience overall than steam link, for sure. But we are here because we believe steam will improve on their software.

I´m also having this issue on the shield tv pro, last steam link update. Mouse wired on the host or on the client produces the same horrible lag. Host is i5 13400, RTX 3060, nvenc encoder.
Yeah, the mouse rendering is fine in Moonlight, I just don't want to use it since it requires running that server application on my gaming PC as well, and I find it really awkward to use with needing to go into a web GUI to configure a locally-running application...
