I am a final-year Computer Science Engineering student from Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore. This is my genuine campus experience, shared honestly from my first year to final year journey.
Brief Description of My College
GCT is located in the main area of Coimbatore city. One thing I will never forget is Bus Number 70, which we usually take from Gandhipuram to reach the campus.
Despite being in the city, the campus feels completely different from outside life.
The college is full of greenery everywhere. It feels more like a park than a college. The climate is almost cool throughout the year, and after joining GCT, I even noticed that I got my natural skin tone back within three months, which shows how calm and healthy the environment is.
Infrastructure & Facilities
To be honest, the infrastructure is not very modern. Most of the buildings are old, and some laboratory systems are outdated. A few labs still run on old Windows 7 systems, and some computers are not in working condition.
But one thing I learned here is that good learning does not always depend on infrastructure.
First Year to Final Year Journey
When we entered first year, we attended a 14-day induction program. During this program, we were introduced to:
- Various clubs
- Sports and cultural activities
- College rules and values
- GCT culture (strictly no ragging)
- Strong seniorājunior bonding
The staff guided us well in the first year, but gradually, the guidance reduced year by year. This made me realize the importance of self-study. Most of the skills I learned were through my own effort rather than classroom teaching.
Friends & Campus Culture
One of the best things about GCT is the people.
I can confidently say: āFriends here are diamonds.ā
I made many genuine friendships that helped me grow personally and mentally.
Another important lesson GCT taught me is:
Never develop an inferiority complex.
Here, you survive only if you speak up, communicate, and stand for the truth. GCT is a competitive environment, but it prepares you for the real world.
Hostel Life
Hostel food was average, not great but manageable.
The monthly hostel fee is around ā¹3000, which feels high for a government college, but still affordable compared to private institutions.
College Fests & Hackathons
The major hackathon conducted yearly is the Smart India Hackathon (SIH).
Participating in SIH was a valuable experience, exposing us to real-world problem-solving and teamwork.
Each year, there are usually two main functions:
- A welcome function for juniors / when we move to the next academic year
- A department-level function
One funny thing in GCT culture: Mechanical department students dominate most functions š.
Placements
Placements at GCT happen mainly because of the strong alumni network. Alumni actively invite companies and help maintain placement opportunities.
Overall placements are good, but only if you are well-prepared.
What I Learned & What I Failed to Learn
Things I learned:
- Importance of self-study
- Handling competition
- Facing distractions and still moving forward
- Understanding that communication is a core skill
One thing I failed to learn properly:
Communication skills
Even though I had good technical skills and attended many company interviews, the main reason for my rejection was communication. This is something GCT made me realize very strongly.
Final Thoughts
GCT is not a college where everything is given to you.
It is a place where you build yourself.
There will be distractions, challenges, and pressureābut if you face them honestly, GCT shapes you into a strong individual.
