Bridge Courses: Building a Strong Foundation
The first semester at VIT is an important phase where we adapt to university-level academics. To ensure everyone starts on a level playing field, VIT offers bridge courses that address gaps in fundamental knowledge, especially in areas like language proficiency or other essential disciplines.
- Screening and Allocation: Every fresher is assessed through a screening test or based on their prior academic background. Depending on the results, bridge courses may automatically be added to your timetable.
- Non-Credit Nature: These courses don’t contribute to our CGPA or the minimum credits required for graduation. However, they play a crucial role in strengthening our academic foundation.
Personally, I’d encourage you to embrace these courses as opportunities to enhance your skills and ensure long-term success. They really help in building confidence as we tackle advanced coursework.
Credit System: Flexibility and Balance
The academic system at VIT operates on a credit-based framework, giving us the flexibility to tailor our workload according to our capabilities.
Credit Registration Guidelines:
- The standard load is 23 credits per semester, which is ideal for keeping pace with the program’s duration.
- Depending on circumstances, we can register for a minimum of 16 credits or a maximum of 27 credits per semester. During summer or weekend semesters, there’s no credit limit.
- If our CGPA falls below 4.0, we’re advised to take only 16 credits until we improve. If this isn’t done, the Dean of Academics might terminate our studentship.
Final Year Flexibility: In the final semester, we can register for fewer than 16 credits to meet graduation requirements, giving us more focus as we wrap up our studies.
Managing Backlogs: Clearing the Path to Success
Sometimes, we might struggle with certain courses despite our best efforts. VIT offers multiple opportunities to address backlogs efficiently.
Grades and Re-Registration:
- An F Grade means we need to re-register for the entire course in another semester.
- An N Grade lets us re-register only for the failed components (e.g., theory or lab).
- For grade improvement, we must re-register for all components of the course.
Summer and Weekend Semesters: VIT often offers courses during these periods, which gives us a chance to clear backlogs early. Keep in mind, though, that re-registering for any course comes with a fee.
Course Management: Add, Drop, or Withdraw
One of the things I really appreciate about VIT is the flexibility we have in managing our course registration.
- Add/Drop of Courses: We can modify our course registration within the first three instructional days of a semester. This lets us adjust our schedule based on workload or preferences. However, this isn’t available for short-duration summer or weekend semesters.
- Course Withdrawal: If we aren’t satisfied with our performance after CAT-I, we can withdraw from certain courses. These courses will be marked with a W Grade and won’t affect our CGPA. Some conditions apply, like retaining at least 16 credits (unless you’re a final-year student).
Attendance: A Key to Academic Eligibility
Attendance is crucial for academic success at VIT. To qualify for exams like CAT-I, CAT-II, and FAT, we need at least 75% attendance.
- Nine-Pointer Advantage: If our CGPA is 9.0 or higher with no backlogs, we’re exempt from the attendance requirement. This privilege is dynamic, though, and depends on our CGPA at any given time.
Performance Evaluation: GPA and CGPA
VIT evaluates academic performance through two metrics: Grade Point Average (GPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
GPA Calculation
GPA is the weighted average of grades earned in courses registered during a semester. It is calculated as follows:

Where:
- Ci is the number of credits for the ith course.
- GPi is the grade point for the ith course.
CGPA Calculation
CGPA is the overall weighted average of all grades earned since the first semester and is calculated similarly. The CGPA is a reflection of a student’s academic journey and does not include grades for pass-fail, audit, or additional courses.
% Equivalent
The CGPA can be converted to a percentage using the formula:
Percentage = CGPA × 10For example, a CGPA of 8.75 is considered equivalent to 87.5% (CGPA of 8.75 x 10 = 87.5%). Controller of Examinations will issue necessary certificates to students who request for CGPA to percentage equivalence of marks.

- A student is declared to have passed/ cleared a course, if he/she has earned any one of the following grades: ‘S, A, B, C, D, E or P, called the ‘Performance Grades’. Overall grade in a course is based on the credit ratio of course components (L+T: P).
- The letter grade ‘F’ will be awarded under the following circumstances:
I. Students who fail to clear a course due to their poor performance in the course.
II. If a student clears all the components individually but if the grand total of that course does not meet the passing range then “F” grade is awarded.
To clear an ‘F’ grade, students should re-register the course in the subsequent semester(s).
- The letter grade ‘N’ will be awarded under the following circumstances.
I. Students who have not cleared one or more component(s) of a course (Theory/ Lab).
II. Students who are debarred in writing FAT due to lack of attendance.
III. Students who are absent during FAT.
IV. Students debarred due to acts of indiscipline/ exam malpractice
Students who fail to write the FAT due to valid medical reasons will be initially awarded an ‘N’ grade. They are eligible to apply for Re-FAT. If they fail to appear for the Re-FAT as per the schedule for any reason – including medical or non-medical, the grade ‘N’ already awarded will be retained as it is and no second chance will be given to them to write the FAT. The ‘N’ grade will be converted into a performance grade after the student takes up the Re-FAT. If a student fails to write the FAT due to reasons other than the one indicated above shall be awarded ‘N’ grade by treating the course as incomplete. Letter grade ‘N’ carries ‘Zero’ grade point and to clear the course, the student has to register the course again in a subsequent semester and complete the same with a performance grade.
Due to reasons beyond the control of the student/ University or due to non- academic reasons, if a student could not complete the entire course within a semester, he/she may be permitted to complete the remaining part of the course in a subsequent semester. This will be shown in the Grade Sheet by an ‘N’ grade indicating that the course remains incomplete. This can happen in cases like the theory portion of a lab embedded course is completed in a semester but the experiments could not be completed within the semester.
Absolute and Relative Grading
The letter grade awarded to a student for his/her performance in a course can be based on either the Absolute Grading or the Relative Grading concept. The ‘Relative Grading’ concept indicates the academic standing of a student in his/her class. All the theory component of the courses, with the class strength is more than 10, shall follow class-wise relative grading concept. In Relative Grading, the following two extreme situations which normally upset the students are nullified
1. Majority of students scoring very high marks because, either the question paper is easy or the evaluator is very lenient.
2. Majority of students scoring very low marks because of either the question paper is tough or the evaluator is very strict. In this system, grades are awarded to students according to their performance relative to their peers in the same class (class is defined as a unique combination of course-slot-faculty). Normally the class average mark is taken as midpoint of ‘B’ grade, and relative to this and depending on the sigma (σ, standard deviation) value, the other grades are finalized.. A combination of absolute and relative grading systems is adopted in converting marks to grades.

The F-grade mark threshold (<50) is based on the formula mean - 2×sigma. If this value is lower than 50, it is used instead of 50 to determine the passing requirement.
Awarding S Grades:
If an "S" grade boundary exceeds 100 or is absent in the course, the top 3 students or top 5% (whichever is higher) of the class will receive the "S" grade.
Rounding Rules:
- Grand total marks are rounded up to the next integer for calculations and display purposes.
- Marks for individual components are stored with up to two decimal places.
Grade band limits (minimum and maximum) are rounded off:
- ≥0.5 is rounded up.
- <0.5 is truncated.
Pass/Fail Adjustments:
- If the E-grade threshold falls below 50, it becomes the new passing mark.
- When class averages are high, scores >50 may result in an F grade; under such cases, an E grade is awarded to declare the student as passed.
Grade Band Rules:
- If the minimum is <100% but the maximum exceeds 100%, the maximum is reset to 100%.
- If the minimum exceeds 100%, those grades cannot be issued.
Absolute Grading Cases:
- Applied if class strength ≤10 in theory or lab-embedded courses.
- Used for laboratory, soft skills, extracurricular, NGCR (non-graded core requirement), and project courses regardless of class strength.

Minimum Requirement: Students must score at least 50% overall (average of all experiments) to pass. Failing to do so will result in an 'N' grade, and they’ll need to re-register for the lab course.
Assessment Breakdown:
- Continuous assessment (performance in lab exercises): 60%
- Final assessment test: 40%
- Soft skill courses are also treated as lab courses and follow the same grading system with the same weightage distribution. An absolute grading system is applied to evaluate these courses.
In short, consistent effort in lab classes is crucial to passing and avoiding re-registration.
Evaluation of Courses with Embedded Laboratory
For courses that include both theory and lab components, the Final Assessment Test (FAT) will cover both parts. The total marks for the course will be calculated based on the ratio of theory (including tutorials) to lab credits, using the formula (L+T:P/2).
Pass Requirement for Lab Component:
- Students must score at least 50% marks (average of all lab exercises) to pass the lab component.
- Failing the lab component will result in an 'N' grade for the entire course, and the course will be marked as “not completed.”
Key Points:
- No separate grades are given for the theory and lab components; the course is evaluated as a whole.
- Students failing the lab component must re-register and complete the lab.
- If a student passes the lab component but fails the theory component, their lab marks will carry over once they pass the theory FAT.
- Alternatively, students may re-register for the entire course if they wish to improve their grade.
