Uses of Aldehydes

Example: Bakelite (phenol-formaldehyde resin) is used in electrical switches, handles, and kitchenware.

2. Preservation of Biological Specimens

An aqueous solution of formaldehyde known as formalin is used as a preservative. It prevents the growth of microorganisms and slows down the decomposition of tissues, helping preserve biological samples for long periods.

Example: Formalin is used to preserve specimens in laboratories and museums.

3. Manufacture of Chemicals

Aldehydes serve as important starting materials in the preparation of many organic compounds. They are used in the production of dyes, drugs, perfumes, and agricultural chemicals.

4. Perfumes and Flavouring Agents

Ketones are important carbonyl compounds containing the functional group (>C=O) between two carbon atoms. They are extensively used as solvents, pharmaceutical intermediates, and in the production of perfumes, cosmetics, and industrial chemicals.

1. As Industrial Solvents

Ketones are excellent solvents because they can dissolve a wide range of organic compounds. They are therefore used in industries dealing with paints, varnishes, plastics, and synthetic fibres.

Example: Propanone (acetone) is widely used as a solvent.

2. Pharmaceutical Industry

Ketones are important intermediates in the synthesis of medicines and pharmaceutical products. Their chemical reactivity makes them useful in various drug-manufacturing processes.

Example: Acetone is used in the preparation and purification of pharmaceutical products.

3. Manufacture of Chemicals

Ketones are used as raw materials in the manufacture of dyes, pesticides, and several industrial chemicals. They participate in many chemical reactions and help in producing value-added products.

Example: Acetone is used in the production of plastics and synthetic chemicals.

4. Nail Polish Removers

Due to its strong solvent action, acetone can dissolve nail polish quickly and effectively. Hence, it is a common ingredient in nail polish removers.

Example: Acetone-based nail polish removers.

5. Perfumes and Cosmetic Products

Some ketones have pleasant odours and are used in perfumes, soaps, and cosmetic preparations. They help provide characteristic fragrances to these products.

Example: Camphor, a naturally occurring ketone, is used in fragrances and medicinal products.
