IIT Mandi is one of the youngest of the IITs and was founded in 2009 under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. It was established to maintain high standards of teaching and scholarly activity in engineering, technology, and sciences. The institute started its first academic session in July 2009 with 97 students in three undergraduate programs: CSE: Computer Science and Engineering, ECE: Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Mechanical: mechanical engineering. In the beginning, the classes were taken at IIT Roorkee but later in 2010, the institute was shifted to its temporary campus in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. The university has expanded and has a land at Kamand Valley which was opened in 2012 for most of the learning activities.

Administration of Indian Institute of Technology Mandi

The governor body of IIT Mandi is defined to consist of distinguished members from government, industry, and academia. The Director is appointed by the MHRD and oversees the academic and administrative functions of the institute. These are subunits headed by deans and department heads with responsibilities of administrative and supervisory control of academic and research endeavors. Other offices of the administration are the Registrar’s Office, the Finance Office, and the Academic Affairs Office which oversees academic activities and other logistics of the institute.
