FIVE KILLED IN CRASH FORMER ELAINE HAMMERSTEIN IS VICTIM IN MEXICO. Father of Retired Actress Noted as New York Stage Producer -Husband a California Democratic Leader, TIJUANA MEXICO, Aug. 14. (AP) - Five Americans, including James Walter Kays, 60, former California Democratic party official, and his wife, the former Elaine Hammerstein of the screen, were killed in a (spectacular automobile crash last night twelve miles south of Tijuana. Kays, investigating officers said, was at the wheel of the sedan that crashed into a car driven by a Mexican. The six occupants of the Mexican, who received minor injuries. ALL FROM CALIFORNIA. Kays at one time was Los Angeles police commissioner. He and Miss Hammerstein were married in Los Angeles twenty-two years ago. She retired from the screen soon afterward. Those killed were riding with Kays northbound to Tijuana from Rosarito Beach, according to the Mexican highway patrol. The vehicle, traveling at high speed, swung around a curve, smashed into a car driven by Angel Saad Andres of Ensenada and carened off into a steep embankment, the Mexican motorist told officials, Kays and the three women were killed in the crash. Garvey died two hours later in Tijuana hospital. The bodies were taken to a Tijuana mortuary. Miss Hammerstein was the daughter of the New York stage producer and impresario, Arthur A A Hammerstein. and she came Hollwood an accomplished actress. FAMOUS AS PRODUCER.
