NESN history, coverage, features

NESN, or the "New England Sports Network" in full, is an American regional sports network. Fenway Sports Group, the owners of Liverpool and the Boston Red Sox, are the majority owners, with Delaware North, the owners of the Boston Bruins, holding a minority stake through a joint venture.

Though NESN is available nationally, it primarily serves the New England area, excluding Fairfield County, which is included in the greater New York City media market. As a result, NESN is regarded as a local broadcaster despite being carried nationally by select TV providers.

The network has broadcast Major League Baseball fixtures involving the Boston Red Sox and National Hockey League matches featuring the Boston Bruins, two franchises owned by NESN's co-owners.

NESN began airing Boston Red Sox games at launch and later became the exclusive broadcaster for all matches, except those televised by national sports networks. The network also provides pre- and post-game shows such as Extra Innings and Red Sox Final.

New England Sports Network broadcasts in high definition, becoming the first regional sports network to air Major League Baseball in HD in 2006. Additionally, NESN became available in up to 4K UHD, broadcasting all Boston Red Sox matches in 4K with HDR in 2021.

NESN has also covered a variety of other sporting events, including college sports, minor league baseball, minor professional ice hockey, the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), as well as select National Women's Hockey League, USL Championship, and USL League One matches.

NESN broadcasts its MLB and NHL content, including live matches, on its national feed. An MLB Extra Innings and/or NHL Center Ice subscription may be required. However, NESN has another feed called NESN National for cable systems outside of New England, which does not include the network's MLB and NHL games.

NESN also has an overflow channel named NESN Plus, or NESN+. This channel assists with live sports coverage during schedule conflicts, allowing the main network to cover either the Red Sox or Bruins while NESN Plus takes on the other events. Furthermore, NESN is available through its subscription-based streaming service, NESN 360 (formerly known as NESNgo).
