TDP history, coverage, features
Teledeporte is a public sports television channel owned and operated by Televisión Española. The channel was launched on February 12, 1994, which came in quite handy to cover the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. Since then, Teledeporte has been considered as the go-to channel to watch Olympic sports and disciplines, among other events.
Teledeporte came close to being shut down in 2014 due to financial problems, but the election of José Antonio Sánchez as Televisión Española’s president changed such plans. The channel would see its sports coverage boosted with events such as the 2012 Olympic games, which brought the station’s largest audience for an Olympic event when Usain Bolt won the Gold Medal in the 100m dash for men.
Over the years, Teledeporte has covered sports such as basketball, tennis tournaments, handball, cycling, international swimming competitions, waterpolo, gymnastics, and athletics. Other events scheduled to be aired by TVE may be broadcast by Teledeporte if there are scheduling conflicts or if the event in question does not end as initially planned.
Teledeporte started its broadcasts on SD format, but that changed on December 14, 2017, when TVE decided to start to broadcast Teledeporte’s content in HD. A downscaled version of the HD feed is offered to users who cannot access the network’s High Definition feed.
