The Liga Nacional de Futsal is the main futsal competition in Brazil. The tournament was created in 1996 taking the NBA as an inspiration for its format, and with the aim to develop the best futsal players in the country.
The competition usually runs from March until December, with all teams facing each other as part of the regular season. Once each team completes 23 games, the top 16 enter the playoffs, where they will be paired up based on their ranking. All ties are played on a two-leg format, where the team that wins the most matches makes it to the next round, but in the event of two draws or alternate wins, the home team in the return leg gets an edge and makes it to the next round. Eventually, two teams will stand in the final to fight for the title.
Like in most leagues around the world, the LNF also works with a relegation process, although this takes place every two years by adding up their points from those competitions. For practical purposes, the four teams with the lowest number of points after two seasons are relegated.
Teams such as Carlos Barbosa, Ulbra, and Jaragua are the top winners in this competition, but the real battle comes in the regions, where Rio Grande do Sul has seen its teams win the title more times than any other region in history.
