Villarreal will take on Barcelona in the match of La Liga this weekend. Ahead of El Clasico, the Barcelona vs Villarreal clash will mean a lot.
It will determine if La Liga is a three-horse race or not – analytically speaking. Three points separate the leaders Real Madrid from third-placed Villarreal whereas Barcelona take their position in between with 25 points ahead of match-day 11. It seems as if the top three teams in La Liga standings are in a competition apart where winning the title is a realistic dream – although football pundits have already tipped the challenge to be a Barcelona vs Real Madrid issue again.
However, being only two points behind the Catalans, Villarreal stand a mathematical chance of giving a tough fight to the two teams that are above them in order to achieve good standards in La Liga. A rare victory for the Yellow Submarines at the Camp Nou this weekend will put them on top of Barcelona with a one-point advantage.
Most importantly, it will offer Villarreal an immense boost of confidence while the Blaugrana’s strength in depth this season will once again be questioned. Yellow Submarine striker Nilmar hopes that his side will maintain the remarkable form that has seen them create a nine-match unbeaten run since losing to Real Sociedad on match-day 1 of La Liga.
“I think it’s normal that Barcelona and Real Madrid are competing for the league. But this year, there’s not such a big gap with us in third,” the Villarreal forward was quoted as saying on Capitalfm.co.ke.
“We are going to try and keep our current form, so that these two these two teams don’t escape from us. We’ve got a style of playing that we must not change.
“To play at the Camp Nou is very difficult and we’ll have to give 100 percent in order to take something positive from the match. We are going there with the aim of picking up three points that will keep us in a good position.”
Another interesting aspect, should Barcelona drop points against Villarreal and Real Madrid (later on), is that La Liga may not shape itself as a three or a two-horse race. Instead, such a prospect could substitute Barcelona with Villarreal as genuine contenders for the Spanish Primera Division.
But if the Yellow Submarines eventually stumble under the weight of pressure as La Liga continues, then it will look like the league title is there for Real Madrid to grab it. In such instances, it would be down to Los Blancos to make the most of their rivals’ failures.
