Over 2 years ago I thought the pain in my heart would never go away. Then I remembered with my son, if we had not set the sadness aside and chosen to walk out into the unknown, the odds of making a profound difference in his life would have been pretty low. So we chose to do it again. To find enthusiasm and move forward. As you watch each video segment, there is a mother behind the camera with a heart slowly healing. So happy to be at this point in the journey and incredibly grateful for modern day miracles!

Summer 2012-2013
We are celebrating a year well-lived.
It wouldn't have been such an exciting year without our BIG move. We left our awesome house and wonderful friends in Virginia to move to Seattle (Southern Alaska). It has been an amazing year full of new adventures and new friends to share it with. This book contains our happy times spent together as a family.
We are living the life!

my valentines
between the craziness of ski season, overlapping with basketball, lacrosse, scouts, piano, violin and school work we squeeze a little time in for crafts.
the kids valentines went from….
this…
to this.
we can only handle so much craft time in this house so on to after breakfast card games.
a concerned brother watches as she checks for aces in her deck.
she is all about a fair game.
except when she doesn’t win.
then on to the dancing. naked of course. glad she kept the diaper on this time.
picture perfect static doo.
and off goes the diaper behind the camera. smart move girl. you at least have some modesty.
these new couches are my valentines gift,
and anniversary and birthday……
love them.
and him.
happy valentines day!

Blessed and Grateful for 2012
i kind of really like the Christmas card this year.
maybe it is because we were able to highlight yet again the beautiful area we live in. last year it was the beach of north carolina, before that lincoln’s monument and the year before that the washington monument.
maybe it could also be because the kids are still in their cute, young stage of life. love their faces.
for our family it was another one of those really eventful, life changing years.
we are grateful for ever single bit of 2012 and for those near and far who we got to share it with.

The Early Bird
At 7:00am Saturday morning we all awoke to the sound of Dallin figuring out a new song on the piano.
From the video you can tell his brothers fully support his piano playing so early in the day.
Here’s to our early bird.

Pumpkinlicious with Brown Butter Frosting
Just when I thought I was completely over the pumpkin and cinnamon flavors of October and November; BAM, it hit me. I had a craving for these amazing, pillowy soft cookies that transform pumpkin pie into portable treats.
I’ve been making them since 2008. I highly recommend them. D, Z, A & R recommend them too. So do all the people we have shared them with.
Here is our young master cookie baker in 2009. He looks happy doesn’t he? It’s definitely the smell of the brown butter frosting he’s working on.
They start out as just pumpkin cookies, then once the brown butter frosting is added, they take you to a whole new realm.
Enough said. Try them out for yourself.
Martha recommends using a pastry bag. I don’t. I speed up the process skipping the pastry bag and dropping the cookies on the pan with a cookie scoop.
Here you go!
Pumpkin Cookies with Brown Butter Icing
Martha Stewart Living, October 2004 Yield Makes about 6 dozen
Ingredients
-
For the Cookies
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/4 teaspoons coarse salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 1/4 teaspoons ground ginger
- 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 2 1/4 cups packed light-brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups canned solid-pack pumpkin (14 ounces)
- 3/4 cup evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
-
For the Icing
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
- 10 tablespoons (1 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon evaporated milk
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Directions
- Make cookies: Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg in a medium bowl; set aside.
- Put butter and brown sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in eggs. Reduce speed to low. Add pumpkin, evaporated milk, and vanilla; mix until well blended, about 2 minutes. Add flour mixture; mix until combined.
- Transfer 1 1/2 cups batter to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/2-inch plain tip (such as Ateco #806). Pipe 1 1/2-inch rounds onto parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart. Bake cookies, rotating sheets halfway through, until tops spring back, about 12 minutes. Cool on sheets on wire racks 5 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire racks; let cool completely.
- Make icing: Put confectioners' sugar in a large bowl; set aside. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, swirling pan occasionally, until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Immediately add butter to confectioners' sugar, scraping any browned bits from sides and bottom of pan. Add evaporated milk and vanilla; stir until smooth. Spread about 1 teaspoon icing onto each cookie. If icing stiffens, stir in more evaporated milk, a little at a time
The up and coming cookie bakers of 2012.
BEWARE: these bakers are bringing the ninja back into baking.
Three cheers for pumpkin!

hitch hiker
I never thought I would see a hitch hiker in our little suburb, but to my surprise the other morning I did.
It was my own son. He still has no idea I took this thanks to a telephoto lens. It might have helped that he was far too involved in his own world reading a book to know I even came out the door that day. Oh, how I would love to be alone reading a book waiting on someone else to get me where I needed to go.
I sent him out the door saying, “Go catch a ride to violin! Maybe if you wait long enough on the curb someone will pick you up” Even 10-yr-olds have a sense of humor.
It was time to get in our car and go.
